Building Vertical Cities: Daniel Winey at TEDxConnecticutCollege

Dan Winey is the Chairman of the global architecture and design firm Gensler, a painter, would-be golf pro, and an evangelist for Vertical Cities. Dan believes that urban design is the single-most important influencer of the human experience, achieving its greatest potential in developing economies. He has collaborated with the leaders of many countries in Asia to develop the "Glocal" dialogue --preserving local historic character and culture while concentrating density in vertical city centers. An architect with a passion for livable communities, Dan believes that sustainability is not an option, but a prerequisite for survival.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

To make the most efficient "space" (not necessary skyscraper and btw no current cities are self sustainable, it require food grown from rural areas) is by making everything you need, want and desire in close proximity to where you live, like Hong Kong where cars is a hindrance. It cannot be claimed to be a city IF it doesn't have it own emergency services (hospital, police, fire) and most importantly a real city is the one that could "morph" into it own shape over time and not "designated", because you cannot forge a long lasting character IF there are hundreds of these.

I like thinking out of the box like shown in this video. I would love to see a country actually build a city from the ground up using this concept with open spaces between these buildings. Have the integrated public transportation made in such a way that people would actually want to use it (there are many ideas on how this can be done).

Since it called "self sustainable" vertical city, don't let inhabitant come out for the entire year once this building is fully occupied, then I will be impress.
