I'm not disappointed at all. The housing market is crazy everywhere. This is just not a good time to try to buy a house. This seems like a great solution and I know the birds will love it.

It’s a sellers market right now it’s insane. Small town homes go quick if they are 15 minutes from the main metropolitan areas

The aviary looks good. I highly recommend some barrier to burrowing animals so that animals such as foxes and coyotes don't get into your hen house. Some buried mesh extending out parallel to the ground about 2 feet or so. Also, have a happy birthday!

There are schematics about habitats for foxes and coyotes. I recommend you check out those to get ideas on how to keep them out. Glad that the bottom level will be closed so they cant get them through the mesh. I have heard stories from chicken owners. That being said someone who has experience with back yard chickens might have good ideas to help too.

I worked at the Key Largo Wild Bird Sanctuary, and we'd occasionally have a racoon get into a bird pen. The beautiful, large, natural 'cages' had to be very sturdily built against predators.

Brock, you’re doing great! You have chosen to "bloom where you’re planted" and it’s wonderful that you’re doing this. The alternative is delaying it forever ♾ and letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, as they say.

I can see your vision by your description and it’s going to be a Toucan Paradise! You’re an amazing person for putting them before everything else, I know from watching Bird Tricks for so many years how time consuming, expensive, heartbreaking and rewarding Toucans can be. That’s how I found your channel, from Jamie 😎 I’m excited to see what comes next. I’m sending you all my love and positive energy 💙💙💙💙

Unsolicited FYI on trees: Preparing the soil for them can be a key factor in their success. Altering the pH, increasing the organic matter, or adding sand to increase water movement through the soil are examples. It is something you can start working on before everything else is in place. There is a lot of info out there on how to modify garden soil for free or cheaply. It is not uncommon, and sometimes suggested, to prepare the soil a year in advance for fruit trees like apples. So you shouldn't feel as though you have to wait to start, which I know can be frustrating with a project. Also, you may want to look into how you wish to water them. Unfocused watering can get expensive very quickly, especially with new plants. The plants will also have different watering needs that will vary with the time of year. You are working towards creating a mini ecosystem for your flock and that is not only amazing, but inspirational. I am certain it will be spectacular!

Interest rates are going up and house prices are high so probably best to stay where you are and make what you have work. I did the same when we bought this place in 2012 but interest rates were super low and house prices had tanked. Hard part was actually finding a place that was move in ready and still affordable. Keep working at it as is. It appears you have a big lot so possibilities are endless. Hopefully it's paid off or paid down to the point you're not paying much on the mortgage. You'll buy more time and can wait for the right place without being rushed into something.

Maybe also follow some security advices for keeping other birds, like chickens, safe outside. E.G. where I'm from, you need to make sure nothing can dig its way inside, like pouring concrete or putting down pavement stones. And of course, protection from birds of prey. I'm just a bit worried, so no offense :)

That's crazy! They could rent the house to college students. But, that comes with upkeep and any damage they do. They could hire a property manager.

@@2degucitas we where about to but all the appliances need updating think 30+ years old. And we are 8 hours away so we cannot be on call if there’s any problems. So it makes since to sell in this hot market. The market is so hot because people are renting out there older houses instead of listing them. I have 2 500k houses on my street of 15 that are being rented.

This is fantastic. I grew up in north Louisiana and remember the extremes of weather (ice storms, tornadoes, etc) and animals. Forgive me for asking because I’m sure you’ve covered all possibilities, but will you have built-in protections for heavy ice, winds, foxes, coyotes, etc.? I can’t wait to see the stages of construction for this dream. I’m delighted that you’ll get to see the birbs enjoy this soon! You’re doing a great job 👍

For extreme weather they'll just be brought inside. But yes I'm also planning as much protection from other animals as possible. And to try and keep potential prey items out and safe from them as well.

Fun fact about toucans:toucans might look cute and nice at the same time but toucans used to be monsters in the last plus there was one flying monster that was really related to a stork and a toucan which was called "Quetzalcoatlus" it was the largest animal to ever lived it, it lived in the late certecous period for 70-65 million years ago yet it was tall as a giraffe and yet it's wingspan was 10 meters long, Quetzalcoatlus was not a dinosaur but it was a flying reptile and they are carnivores plus they only ate lizards, baby dinosaurs, fish, and sometimes left over corpse's and yet Quetzalcoatlus did lived in north America like trex and yet Quetzalcoatlus had a couple of predators like trex, trixsartop's bigger Quetzalcoatlus, haxzegoteryx, and even gorgosaurus and yet good thing is that Quetzalcoatlus went extinct as the same period as the dinosaurs roamed the earth 🌍

I’ve heard that melted beeswax is a good natural sealant for wood and will get naturally drawn into the pores. Wranglerstar has a good youtube video on how to apply it. See the 10:20mark-12:50mark of his video that is titled “A Warning To All Men (EAST COAST)”. He also mentions treating it with linseed oil afterward.

Buying in this market is so difficult! My hubby and I have been outbid on multiple houses this year - one house went for $200k over the asking price. That's right, $200k over asking for a 2 bedroom house on 2 acres. It's horrible. You'll be way better off to save your money, make the current place work, and catch the inevitable market crash in a couple of years.
