    Knightsbridge. Funny as we just bought a few screwless plug plates and they are all Knightsbridge. I complained about the screws that came with it don't fit. Turned out was me being an idiot and it was because the box wasn't flush. I always asked them about a light switch I think it was, that seemed to not be right. They talked me through getting the plate off the back as it didn't seem to be budging. I was doing that wrong also. So they are helpful. Their instructions could be better though.

I’ve done various bits of framing/studs etc like that and always worried I wasn’t supposed to screw in at 45 like that. Wondered if maybe using 90 degree brackets was more standard. Reassuring to see the pros doing it. Is it standard to do that? And what brand of screws might you recommend for such a job. Thanks!

  • @jimichip

    @jimichip

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Mike. You did see that correctly. Yes, it is common practice but generally with nails. Once the wall was pushed into its final position everything was nailed in at 45 degrees. Once all of the noggins are in and it has been plasterboarded on both sides it becomes extremely strong. Probably the most important fixings to get right are the ones that go into the ceiling, floor and walls that the stud is fitted against.

    Slightly random question- I need to frame a doorway, the (mainly US) vids I seen show the ‘header’ as two 2x4s on end but you guys have just one on its side, does it make much difference? Is the 2 on their side more for load bearing walls?

  • @jimichip

    @jimichip

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good question. We don’t tend to use studwork for load bearing in the U.K. unless it’s specified or in a timber framed house. It’s generally only used as a partition so it’s really only holding itself up.

    Roger, where did you find James & Robin? They your subcontractors or employees? How does this all fit in with skill builders.

    They are not my subcontractor, they run their own jobs and I have just got to know them over the years. Skill Builder is a channel and we started it to help people build their skills. We film people who have something interesting going on.

    If the floor doesn't have a damp proof membrane then place a dpc under the timber and lap it up the sides. If you are not sure then a dpc is cheap and will do no harm
