Here is a quick account of building a stitch and glue canoe kit. Hopefully this will be the first of a small fleet built as after school activities in Port Augusta.

@@wendyanderson8169 just take 2 4x8 plywood epoxy scarf joint the ends together use 3/8 ply use a piece cut from one end to place over the scarf joint epoxy....determine the width you want at the bottom I think mine was about 18 or 20 inches... Cut straight both sides off 12 to 14 inches...... take the 2 side pieces and angle the ends slightly .... more angle means more rocker in the bottom (curve front to back..... more rocker will turn faster less rocker will track straighter ....I had about 4 inches when the bottom of the bow was on the ground the back was about 4 inches up...approx... take the bow ends that are angled and drill 3 holes wire together or use zip ties.... do the same at the rear angle place that over the piece that's left about 20 inches spread the 2 angled side parts and sit between them and determine how wide you want to spread those.... get a feel for what width you like and height of the sides for rowing..... then simply hold it in place...(have a friend trace the bottom edge of the sides to the bottom..... cut with a jig saw skill saw or even a hand saw .... then drill holes along the bottom piece to holes drilled matching the side pieces wire or zip tie together mix epoxy with sawdust and glue inside bonding sides to bottom..... it's good to add a piece along the top edge as gunwales adding stiffness I just sat directly on the bottom..... if you use 2 4x8 ply you get a canoe about 15 ...and half feet approx .... you can make it any length you like.... my ply was 4x5 feet so ended up 9 1/2 feet big enough for one adult.... if you make it less than the 16 foot what ever amount you make it shorter will leave ply that you can use to make seats.... if you go 14 ft you can take 2 feet from one end which will leave your center join 1 foot back of center.... or if 12 feet you end up with 4 feet extra and the center 2 feet approx behind center.... it's really easy just cut out an 8 1/2 by 11 paper cut to scale of 2 4x8 but joined then with scissors and scotch tape make a small model first just tape the sides together flat then change the angle until you like what you see then spread draw on the bottom cut out and tape sides to the bottom piece..... use card stock it's easier.... make a couple till you like what you see then just duplicate that in ply.....1/4 inch ply is more than thick enough im thinking the next one I build will be made from door skins.... you can use a squeegee to spread epoxy over the outside and inside after your finish to water proof.... or paint with marine wood paint..... I suggest epoxy the outside with 2 coats.... or more... doorskin will require more caution when standing in the boat and might need flooring strips to strengthen.... but without it should be very light.... my 9 1/2 boat was fairly light and extremely tough....I never weighed it....I also placed a strip 1 inch tall front to rear on the center line to help in tracking straight the are different ways to make those for straight line paddling or more manuverability .... you can have that 1/2 inch high at the front too rear center and 3 inches at the front and or rear for straight tracking..... I put on mine a rudder afterwards that was steered by a line on each gunwale this aided straight aracking while paddling try different things see what you like.... build it the way you want.... I used polyester resin which cured in 15 min.... I suggest using epoxy that gives you an hour or longer.... so you have time before it goes off hard..... check your local laws for boat registration when I built the 9 1/2 cali law said anything over 12 feet required registration or anything with 5 horse plus power did....in think that's changed here now and canoes don't require and can take 5 horse..... watch a few youtu.be videos on build simple plywood canoe....I just winged it and it took probably 6 hours not Counting waiting time for things ti cure or paint to dry..... I'm pretty certain I could build a doorskin canoe in 3 hours now that I have done it not counting cure times.... when I do it again I'll mix my resin with sawdust and put it in a large 1 gallon ziplock freezer bag cut off the corner and squeeze like cake decorating to do the joint of the sides to bottom .... oh after the resin cures cut the zip ties or wire and pull out filling the holes.... it's a fast easy way to build a canoe .... most people should be able to do this in a Friday night plus Saturday ...and Sunday depending on your skill
