    Thanks for another great video. I really appreciate the knowledge about taking it slow when setting up an aquarium. I am in the process of putting together my first saltwater aquarium and have been relying rather heavily on what I learned from your Nano series and now this series. Right now I am trying to comprehend the Quarantine process, but I am having some difficulty finding a trusted resource on how to properly quarantine corals. Your video on fish quarantine was great. Can you put something together like that for corals?

    This is so strange I started my tank then second day I added soft corals then on the third day I added 2 black-and-white clownfish I then added ATM colony I kept my lighting relatively low and on the fifth day I switched on my skimmer. By the seventh day my tank was fully cycled. Although I do not think an aquarium ever stops cycling. And when I go on live streams and talk about how I set up my aquarium I get a lot of beef from people who say I should not of started it the way I did it does not work apparently but I know have 15 healthy carols and two beautiful black-and-white Clownfish. I don’t plan to add many more fish only perhaps a yellow Tang. It’s going to be coral dominated and I now have started adding LPS and SPS Carol It is now eight months old. Thanks so much for the video enjoyed it immensely😀👍🏻💞

    Thanks for all the information on cycling. It was just the other day (on Facebook...) I was discussing how you can do a fish cycle and it wouldn't hurt the fish, as long as you feed small amounts. Is there any evidence of the type of cycle you did on the one day tank, that the ammonia hurt the fish?

  • @ReefBuildersVideo

    @ReefBuildersVideo

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sure you can add SPS day one, the practice of waiting is more on the part of the aquarist getting the parameters in check - if you had an open water system with fresh supply of seawater you wouldn't wait even a minute to put Acros or Montis in.

    @@mstrait44 I believe the issue would be that the pumps would fight each other. Essentially the second pump would be making artificial head pressure as both pumps try to push water out the same outlet. You might be able to make it work if your plumbing and pumps were sized correctly, but it sounds like a headache to me.

    I’ve been out of the hobby for 12 years now. I’ve followed loosely over the years. It’s incredible how much the “philosophy” of reefing has changed. I think we’ve really come into a new age of reef keeping and it centers around man made live rock. Cycling imported Fiji live rock (or nasty muddy Haitian rock) just isn’t happen now a days with sterile or semi-cultured/seeded rock.

  • @sigitas.a

    My journey: Day 1: setup tank with seeded rock, seeded sand and bottled bacteria. Set up daily measurement schedule, bacterial seeding and feeding every other day. Day 2: Add 2 clowns Day 3: test water & feed clowns Day 4: 0 ammonia, 0.05 nitrite and 3 nitrate Day 5: Add 4 hardy corals + 2 hermits, 2 trochus, 2 nassarius + water change Day 7: water change Day 12: Add 8 more corals + water change Day 15: diatoms pop up (yay!) Day 18: diatoms reached their peak, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate + water change + removal of diatoms Day 20: happy tank Future day 27: Add goby and pistol shrimp and stay religiously on the schedule and seed with extra bacteria for a couple of days. In all that time, not one fish or coral was unhappy, the clowns bursted with energy and were eager to eat. I researched all genus’ to know what to look for. Only the toadstool is not opening up but is showing signs of shedding so probably shipping stress. What I think that happens wrong with people who just boot up a tank ‘without cycling’ is that they don’t keep an eye on their parameters and adapt accordingly by skipping a day of feeding for instance. Also letting the tank regulate itself after adding a small step up on bioload is important. As jake said, take it slow, let your bio part of filtration catch up and you’ll be good.

  • @Trenton.D

    @Trenton.D

    The concentration of ammonia that builds up (especially if you’re using a controlled method like supplementing with ammonium chloride) isn’t going to be enough to damage corals. Also, corals will have a biofilm of microorganisms that will metabolize those nitrogenous compounds. In addition, there’s some -omic studies that show corals possess certain enzymes that metabolize them as well. Cycling is such an odd term anyway. Basically it’s just a check to see if the bacterial population has proliferated enough to metabolize those harmful nitrogenous compounds at an adequate rate.
