    Here in 2020! I still have at least one 80486 system. It is originally a VTech Laser system with an Intel 486SX 25 mhz cpu in a slimline desktop case, bought around 1992. However, a few years later, the integrated cpu was switched out to an Evergreen 586-133 cpu upgrade kit in the overdrive slot running at 100 mhz. The system also came WITHOUT any motherboard cache, so I added 128 kB of cache ram onboard, per the instructions on how to do it in the manual & it made the system a little bit faster overall. Also added a no-name sound card, faster video card, an additional harddrive, external cd-rom & increased system simm memory from original 4 mb to 48 mb (max). Also still has a tape backup that I put in there 25 years ago. Original O/S was Windows 3.1, then to 95 a few years later & then updated to 98SE only 10 years ago. I have a ram card that I might add in a free isa slot that would increase that to a total of 64 mb onboard, if I wished to do so later. How ironic that i said "later", because 64 mb of [slow] memory & the technology of the 486 is already passe & vintage by today's standards. I benchmarked the updated computer with Speedsys 4.78 back then almost a decade ago (about 5-6 years before you made this video). I will have to check what I got to compare it with yours above. And I hope everyone is safe & healthy during these uncertain times with the global pandemic.

  • @Audfile

    @Audfile

    7 жыл бұрын

    Up8Y I'm sorry, 286SX, and yes it ran flawlessly. I was there, I didn't learn it from Wikipedia and KZread lmao. 286 was the mainstay for many years and was a minimum spec for games even when Pentium came out.

  • @Up8Y

    @Up8Y

    7 жыл бұрын

    Audfile If it was a 386 instead, that would make sense- the 286 is a 16 bit CPU, and Doom itself takes advantage of DOS/4GW to be able to use 32 bit code making it impossible for Doom to even start on anything below a 386. Of course, somebody could take the source code and port it to entirely 16 bit code. It doesn't take being there to understand well-documented hardware requirements and the technical details of that.

    Hint: Connect the +5V and GND wires of the case's front USB connectors to +5V and GND of the power supply. That way you can use them to e.g. charge your phone. Also quite a lot of SB compatible cards, e.g with ESS chip, have pin headers for speaker and microphone. If your case has individual connectors for each wire, you could plug them there and put the front audio connectors to use! Also, although a 500W power supply may sound overkill, every modern PC draws power mostly via the 12V lines. On an old AT-style motherboard nearly everything uses the 5V rail. And on most modern ATX power supplies, the 5V rail is extremely weak. You really have to check the values noted on the sticker.

    I'd look for the AMD 486-DX3 (100mhz). You could have marked where the missing holes should have been, drilled and tapped them, and then inserted the threaded standoffs in the right locations. For the atx shield you could take an old one, use a nibbling tool to remove all of the metal except for a small rim, and then solder a thin piece of brass to it, and drill that out for the one hole that you needed.

  • @ruthlessadmin
    @ruthlessadmin Жыл бұрын

    Nice build! I'll be producing some ATX-to-AT I/O shields soon and should be able to sell them for about $10 each. I can't find them anywhere and they're trivial to make.

    I'm of the opinion that a retro pc should look retro. If you use old parts, use an old case. But it's still an awesome build, I would kill to get me some 386/486 parts to build a DOS machine for the older stuff! But because I live where I do, I'll probably never own one, unless I pay about what a brand new PC would cost :'(

    I love the floppy emulator and IDE/SD adapter to emulate a hard disk. Is there such a thing as a CD ROM emulator that, like the floppy emulator, can read flash memory and adapt to IDE, letting you choose which chunk of memory (perhaps an ISO file) to mount as a CD? Something with both an IDE and audio output (just like a regular CD drive) would be amazing for maintaining a library of game and boot discs.

    The lack of a key on the old VLB controller is the reason I would have modded the card to remove the requisite pin. Desoldering? Heavens no, I'd just take a small flush cutter you'd have with your soldering station and very carefully snip the pin out. My Hakko snips were about US $7 and were made for cutting this kind of pin. I've often considered trying to get some switches in a drive bay to control jumper settings on these older machines where CPU speeds are set that way rather than via BIOS setting, all the better to have a faster machine that can be dialed back for e.g. Wing Commander. Haven't found a solution I like yet.

    That adapter with the switches at 9:00, where did you get those and where can I buy one? I have a 486 motherboard but the case I found it in is both rusty as all ... you get my point and it's also missing the case cover so I'm thinking about moving it to an ATX case, hence my question.

    After looking at this video again, I see you got the same issue as I on Doom. Awesomme build again. Though my experience with dx2's are that a dx2-80 is a tiny bit more suitable. Shure the 66 is a bit more sought after, though I feel the 80 is a tiny bit more useable. Doom runs butter smooth with an S3-805 and a dx2-80. Have you ever tried to set them up, side by side and see how real life experience is like? The 80 might just be a hidden gem here, and you will be surprised by it.

    Shure it gives a bit more. I was only thinking in terms of those who really need a 486 to play with. To me, it is a sweetspot, for playing 1990 to 1993 games. Pentium is more a kind of 1994 to 1996 kind-a-thing.

    What do you mean there is no reset switch? You are not using the case's momentary power switch so why not use that for reset? As for the AT IO plate, you can easily make one out of a bit of plastic cut out of an ice-cream tub lid, that is what I always do, I made a template and now can make them as needed. Just make it a bit larger than the hole (1 - 2cm on the top and sides) and double sided tape it to the inside of the case. Not critical but it tidies things up nicely. Great build :)

    Awesome vid, quick note tho, instead of modifying an ATA66/100/133 cable you can just use an older UDMA/ATA33 cable. You're not going to get any benefit from the newer cable anyway when using an older IDE controller.

    This is pretty cool but you should do it again with a not-so overkill PSU, a case with two buttons (one for power and one for reset but reset will be used for turbo), put a cover for the motherboard if you ever find one or make your own (if you can), and enough room to put the floppy emulator in the floppy drive. Other than that, this was cool nonetheless.

    man what a nice case. It is very hard to find a 4 5.25 with 2 3.5 bays. F'n impossible to find one with even 2 3.5 bays today! Its a pain because I still use floppies, Zip 250, memory card reader (with bluetooth). I always use separate optical drives one for DVDRW and one for CDRW. I have never seen a CDRW with 8MB buffer and is IDE 133. now try to find a NEW IN BOX White Tower with 6 External drive bays! good luck with that. I have one, but the airflow is horrible, it only uses 80mm fans, 2x front, 2x rear. With my crossfire set up, I like to have a 120mm side fan. The case i am using, if they just used a different front bezel, it would do 2 3.5 external bay. now off to find some treaded plastic stand offs, didn't know they existed ;)

    Yes I regret not getting more of this one. Gigabyte made some really retro friendly cases for a while, now the drive bays are getting less and less. I mean in a modern PC, you just need a SSD these days, so I get that trend. Just sucks for us that want to build a fully decked out retro sleeper.

    you could try 95 osr 2 to have fat32 and a proper DOS/windows installation. 98 will be too slow on 8mb of ram and 66mhz, but 95 should run fine. or... just make several 2gb fat16 partitions and run 6.22. in my opinion the best partition program for DOS is partition magic 8, it fits on a floppy and you can do everything with it, resize, create, delete, merge. it's a great tool.

    Found a small program that will emulate CDrom drives in real DOS. Works really good. You can mount ISO files. Can make bat files to mount much faster. Only thing you would miss is if you have a game that uses CD Audio tracks.

  • @larsenmats

    PhilsComputerLab can BIN / CUE support the audio tracks aswell? And even if they did, the CD audio cable which brings the CD audio sound would cause no CD music to be played I guess. Btw, with Win98SE it I cannot seem to get a Soundblaster 16 PNP or SB 32 PNP ISA cards to work in real DOS without manually copying already installed SB16 and CTCM folders from a DOS 6.22 install, then manually add all the stuff in Autoexec.bat and Config.sys. Just adding lines without the DOS drivers does not seem to work in Win98SE Dos 7.1?
