It boils down to listening to yourself and responding to what you just played and not just relying on playing licks you know because you will just run out because you are not really saying anything you’re just spitting out phrases you learned like a tape recorder. You are talking, telling a story freely singing through your instrument. I acknowledge that sometimes it’s hard to get there.

Man I was just checking out baritone acoustic playing. With those thick ass strings you pretty much got that sound covered- very Jazz. In a universe of turbo Blues artists, you've managed to carve out a really great nitch for yourself. I suppose I might call it: "Blazz"... No don't call it that, just keep on blowin'!

What kind of fucking voodoo is this?! I mean...WTF. I’m sure (I know) there are gems of learning in this for every player, but I’m not sure you can teach what you just did, how your brain works....it’s like trying to explain dreaming in French to an Englishman. Mind blown 🤯 you are a legend.

Victor Wooten explains it really is just a language and the more you live using it, the more (apparent) ‘stamina’ you’ll have. Ask someone to talk about any topic and you can watch them undergo the same thing that happened here, ‘real time’ ability to communicate ‘flexes’ over time, with spots where less thinking is required and spots where more is. It’s OK to have these be less than seamless, in fact, it adds to the ‘interest’ factor IMO (small timings change in unpredictable ways).

Beautifully communicated...

Mr.Smith talks about something not many people or instructors mention at all, music is communication by all means, re-phrasing a lick/sentence is what we actually do when we are talking in our daily life. I once heard Scott Henderson talk about the importance of this as well. I ll definitely tell my students to watch this and all Josh Smith's Quick and Dirty series. Great job Josh, keep them coming and inspiring the New Blues players.

I don't really know how to explain it either, but I heard what u said in the beginning of this video about these things & I think u can really help a lot of folks. I don't think I am the only one.

Josh, your style of guitar playing is hands down second to none IMO. Not sure what its called (Blues, jazz blues, funk, jazz funk blues) lol,, I have no clue,,, but whatever it is, Id say never stop as its one of a kind and its awesome, Now,,, for guys like me who've been playing for 20+ yrs, Im hoping that you'll consider doing many more YT lessons on the improvising/ technique you do as I just cant latch on to it (its frustrating as hell) Your improvising sounds jazzy but still lives in blues / funk. I dont even know what to ask for when it comes to wanting to learn how to play like you lol. After all these years,, I hate to say it, but I think its back to the basics for me. Im subscribed and looking forward to anything you do !

Yes Yes Yes Yes, presented in a way lesser players like me can understand. Wow you made what seems like a complex concept seem very approachable with a lot of experimenting and just playing over and over and over. Maybe others have taught this but your the first one I've seen break it down like this.

Feeling the groove, being able to turn the groove around and not lose the groove. Not loosing your place in the groove. Playing the groove, playing around with the groove...be groovy! You dig? 😉

Sounds a lot like one would approach sex? I'm not trolling, but the concept of keeping it innovative, reserving and building stamina, and pacing yourself to keep going all night, while having lots of fun at the same time...

IMHO any solo more than 12 bars is too long.

maybe i'm crazy, but i'm hearing him repeat himself quite a bit. Especially as far as rhythmic motiff goes. Same stuff over and over. The turnaround to the I chord is always similar. Maybe i should make a video about it. LOL
