Building My Dream Digital Clock: DIY 7 Segment Display with a Cute Robot Twist!
Ғылым және технология
Katie wants a new clock for her workshop, and while she likes the classic cuckoo clocks, they're a little old fashioned. For this element14 presents project, she's going to create her own electronic twist on the time-honored cuckoo clock, with digitally-animated robots instead of birds and beeps instead of chirps.

Great project! One suggestion would be to add a red acrylic filter over the clock digits. It will add contrast and make the numbers stand out more.

That's a great suggestion, will definitely be adding a filter to help with the contrast, thanks!

a little bit of window tint film might work as well.
A hexagon pattern on the face of the clock! timeless!

I like the hexagon idea, thanks!
You put a lot of time on this project. Good job !!!!

I👀 what you did there! 😁
Katie - thank you so much, love your no nonsense explanations x
Another great project! I would probably relocate the power jack into a cavity so that it could either sit on a desk or be hung on the wall and sit flat either way.

That's a brilliant suggestion, I put it on the bottom to make sure it say flat against the wall, but it hadn't crossed my mind to put in a recess, but that would have been perfect, as it sits nicely on a table due to the flat bottom
Great work as always Katie! I look forward to seeing your next project.
This is a labor of love. I've marked it to hopefully try down the road when I get more adept with projects like this. Thanks for the vid. 🙏
Auch! Looking for something in your workshop you know you have and coming up empty is such a pain familiar to all makers. Hopefully as you reorganise your shop, it will turn up.
My only hands-on computer experience in high school was a teletype connected to a mainframe located _somewhere._ 😊
Amazing
Such a fun project! Maybe it's time to use C? :D

Yes, about 1/2 way through I started wishing I'd started in C!

Nice. I just built a Numitron radio alarm clock using a Raspberry Pi, plus some custom boards. Debugging is... ongoing.

That sounds cool
Such a fun idea! 🤩
Nicely done. v2 possibly use wav files, the high pitch of the buzzer can be hard to hear sometimes and w some ppl they cant hear high freq sounds. Congrats.

Nice!
Nice work on a great project. You've inspired me. As for decoration, Midjourney has generated some interesting ideas when I give it the "robot cuckoo clock" prompt.

Cool, I'll check out what it suggests
You could call your robot figure _"COU-2-KOO-2."_ 😉
Great video Would love to see a recreation using Arduino, esp32, i2c leds and a 3d printed bird servomechanism

That's a cool idea, would be an interesting challenge to get all the mechanics working correctly/well. I might give it a try in the future as an alternative!
What about the weights? That's the first thing I think of when I think a cuckoo clock.
You are building with Arduino/rasberry? Previous episodes you are showing your normal methods?
i was expecting a cuckoo to come out and utter the time ;-)
Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! (now dont' take it to school - we don't want you to become "Clock Girl")
Wait when the hell did element 14 get British? Am I supposed to know if my project uses 120 or 220

AFAIK Element 14 has always been a British company. A division of Premier Farnell Ltd of Leeds.

You could change to a 12 HR clock pretty easy, my old Bush clock radio from the 1980s uses 2 LEDs to represent AM and PM. Have thought about upgrading that a few times but never got around to it.

There's a variety of different countries represented. I know in all my projects for element14 I use barrel sockets on the project and spec an AC to DC power supply to power it. With the intention that you should be able to find a power supply unit/brick with the correct plug for your country with the right output voltage
