Building my Bag for Team Innova: Episode 2 Midranges

Спорт

Actual Number: 1,335,468 molds available to be thrown. Alright, I lied. I have no idea how many molds are actually available to be used in your bag, not to mention when we take plastic-type into account. There are what feels like limitless options with what you could choose to bag, and very little guidance on how to choose. "What feels right." "What pros throw." "Definitely NOT what pros throw." The goal of this series is to help you find some guiding principles you can use to start building the most effective bag to help you reach the basket as fast as possible.
I've recently joined Team Innova, and they have TONS of molds to choose from even within one single manufacturer. I'm going to bring you behind the scenes of me building my bag, and talk you through each decision I'm making. My hope is that the same principles I'm using will help you land on the right discs for you! Episode two focuses on some of my favorite discs to throw in the game, midranges. How many flights paths am I looking for with mids?? You'll have to watch to find out!!

I love how similarly we approach building the bag. I have been trying to minimize molds so much and I'm still working on that process but it does build confidence in decision making and in actually throwing. I've narrowed down fairways to 2 molds from 4 and drivers from 5 molds to 2 as well. Feels good knowing exactly what disc to grab for each situation and never second guessing yourself on what you grabbed...just maybe on how it was thrown lol

After playing with the lion I took out my kc pro rocs and roc3s for it. All solid choices. The bulk of my bag consists of mid ranges. But not as many molds, just various stages of wear between the discs to accomplish desired flight characteristics. And almost every thing is in pairs. That said: champ Gator3 for short OS forehand, 1 KC Roc3 for reliable backhand with dependable fade (max weight), 1 lightweight champ Roc 3 for hyzer flipping, beat in KC Roc for flip to flat or anny, Rat for a more OS finish on backhand shots. I have a ton of Mako3 that aren’t in the bag right now. I also have a star Manta that you may find useful for right turning shots. The only reason I’m not bagging it is because it doesn’t have a twin. Good luck with your journey. It’s fun watching you and taking in the knowledge you share!

The star Stingray is an amazing disc when you can find em! Most beautiful flight I've ever seen! The looks I get when I throw it at 40% on a 45° hyzer, 300ft downhill tunnel... watching it flip up to flat and the glide takes over as slowly starts drifting right, it all seems like slow motion. It's not a workhorse, it's a finesse disc. I found a few f2's in the Innova proshop in case I lose my original... again (lost for almost a year in a swamp)

Looking at my lineup just made me feel wiser...lol. Maybe I watch your content too much, but here's what I built on mids. Currently holding 7 molds until I figure out what gets some shelf life, but am loving the joutney! Stable to unstable... SLOT 1-Gator (Champion)...in bag SLOT 2-Roc3 (Champion)..in bag SLOT 3-Warship (Tournament)...in bag (WARSHIP VIP not bagged YET) SLOT 4-BuzzZ Big-Z (BIG-Z BuzzZ and BuzzZ Esp, not bagged yet) SLOT 5-Panther (Champion), but has enough use to hold this slot until I break out the BuzzZ Esp Wombat3 (Champion)..in bag Mako3 (Champion)..in bag Mako3 (HaloStar not bagged yet) Warship (VIP not bagged YET) BuzzZ (Big-Z and Esp plastics not bagged yet) Great content. Funny enough I was about to grab a Halostar Lion just to see another "stable" low speed option. I'm currently debating between the Mako3 and my ViP Warship as my 3rd slot and I have a Big-Z BuzzZ in my 4th slot. Get rid of the overstable mid slot. What your overstable approach disc can't cover, it's usually best to step up to an overstable fairway driver. The difference between something like a Zone and something like a Buzzz OS is so minimal that you are usually better off powering down an over stable fairway for more accuracy rather then 100% zip on a midrange. The once in a 1,000 throws that you need the specific OS mid shot, usually isn't worth the extra weight and bag space it takes up..Just a suggestion though.

    @jymmiwynn2202

I'll second this especially with the Pig. A good set of Pigs paired with a good set of Firebirds can cover a ton of shots. Then every mid can be your preferred version of the Roc. It's a very simple and consistent setup. The general structure of Ricky's bag, which is what I'm recommending, is the best in the game at the moment. Second place goes to Eagle who seems to be only throwing 4 or so discs. That is also very consistent.

  • @jonathanlogan6953

I'll third that. Playing since 2001 and wanted to have overstable mid to have the "whole collection" but found out just what these guys are saying which is that slot is almost always covered with overstable putter(I like Zone) or firebird and I found out I never needed my overstable star ROCX3. So now I have my new KC Pro Roc and couple of worn out ones for understability.

KC pro Rocs have a more rounded dome. Rancho-Rocs are really flat-topped. That is the main difference, and most of them fall into one category or another in that binary system. A variation is other flat Rocs are just not quite as flat as the Ranchos. I am finding more variation due to plastic type even with the same mold. Roc3 dx plastic is very controllable and beats in as you'd expect. The same disc in Gstar plastic was almost good fresh out of the box. 2 or 3 tree whacks and the Gstar Roc3 was perfect.

I know you mentioned the Wombat in passing but I wouldn't disregard it just because another great player uses a lot of them. In premium plastics it flies a slow but consistent drift to the right (RHBH) and is an absolute laser on the hyzer flip.

All though it’s not super readily available you could get a regular panther and it would do just fine. They are essentially innova’s buzzz and everyone needs a disc like that. Has a nice shallow rim and super easy to control, highly recommend!

Roc Toolings: Rancho Roc (only Roc currently produced by innova, tooling on the back says rancho, these were made at the rancho facility, these are the Rocs everybody typically throws because they are the ones found today) San Marino Roc (more blunt edge, tooling says San Marino, typically a little straighter out of the box) Ontario Roc (more blunt edge, very similar to a San Marino, tooling will say Ontario) Some people like the feel of certain older runs of San Marinos and Ontarios, but they don’t run those toolings anymore, all Rocs currently are rancho Rocs

The Mako3 is one of my fave discs but can be very difficult to fly flat and straight for a beginner imo (I’m still a beginner trying to perfect my form currently). A beat in Mako3 would be so nice. But also I wish you’d look into the Manta mid range in Star Plastic. That’s been my go to Innova midrange because of how easy it is to hyzer-flip it and it doesn’t turnover at all for the most part

Can’t go wrong with the no-mistako3. Try it in XT plastic for a straight to understable option off the shelf.

+1 for a Champion Mako3. When it's beat in, it's the best at big glidey anhyzers that don't cut roll, and don't fade out early.

The wombat3 and the mako3 are good disc, but sometimes I think people overlook disc like the coyote in innovas lineup. It starts just a little bit less stable than the mako3, and is one of my personal favorites

DX Stingray is my favorite stunt disc. it just tuns right and turns right and turns right, and if it's up high enough it will fall out and start rolling. feels like i could get it to do a full circle, if i had the arm.

If you love throwing Rocs, welcome to recycling them. I bet you will cover everything with them when beaten them in. Myself I love KC Pro Colour Glow Roc3 and I keep cycling them. Having stable/straight, straight/sligthly understable and understable in my bag.

Robbie throw the mako 3 I’ve had a couple of them in different plastics and you can’t go wrong with star plastic ones. Roc’s are nice but I didn’t like some of the consistency of the molds. If you need something overstable try a rocx3.

You probably going to need to rotate discs for that straight mid range shot quite a bit if you're going with KC Pro Roc's. Too bad they don't make the Spider anymore, the XD as well.

The Spider is so good, I have no idea why it was retired. The first Spider I had was labeled ‘All Purpose’, which was true as it made a great midrange and a pretty good putter as well.

You can definitely get some dx roc3s or in my case is a mcpro roc3 that will go right for days once it gets some chunks taken out of it. My mcpro roc3 probably weighs at least 5 grams lighter than the weight on the bottom from getting chunks taken out of it. It's awesome to have a new one to start beating up which my color glow roc3 stays in its really straight state for a long time after it got a little beat up out of its stable slot. I throw a mixed bag so I actually only have my beat up mcpro roc3 for my right shot. I literally only bag rocs to cover every spot. Color glow or even just champ roc3s can be real meat hooks. My 2x mcbeth roc3 is stupid over stable. Then I have kc pro or dx roc3s to beat into different stages. Gators I use for insane stupid wind, but usually I use a Malta for that right now. I also love that the gator is really easy to use as putter if there's a ton of wind which I've done alot of too, it's also the same size as a putter.

I agree with another comment down below that you don’t need the super OS midrange. You are almost always better off stepping up to your firebird instead. As far as the bag goes: Pigs, aviar3 Stingray, roc3 Teebird3, firebird (Sexton) Destroyer, Shryke I have bagged both the dx stingray and various mako3s… DX stingray takes the cake in my opinion. It holds its flight characteristics very well for base plastic and you know what it’s going to do. Makos are better for the dead straight shot but you have rocs for that. (PS - try the kc glow roc3s)
