Building Extended Shackles, Modifying Polyurethane Bushings, Fitting Exhaust (78 Firebird Ep.39)

We lifted the suspension of this 1978 Firebird using S10 lift spindles in the front and modified leaf spring packs in the rear, but to get even more we used longer than stock shackles. In this episode we'll build stronger shackles to replace our mock-up ones, make them a bit more narrow by using custom bushings to help the exhaust fit, and get the intermediate pipes back in place to rebuild the exhaust system! There is still more suspension work to do after this, but we are nearly ready to call it “driveable!”
Timeline of filming: June 6th, 2022 - June 22nd, 2022
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
00:01 The Receiver - Letter Box
05:40 As We Go - The 126ers

I got a little stuck in the details on this one, it doesn't necessarily matter how I came to every little step but I thought the process of figuring solutions out was mildly interesting so I didn't want to cut too much out. I have gotten a bit burned out on these Firebird videos, this episode was going to be longer but I just couldn't look at it anymore, so I think the next upload will be a video from a different series (Jeep?) to break that up, but I definitely want to get caught up with these videos ASAP. Thanks for sticking around!

Couple notes for anyone else doing similar - make sure that your O2 points down as much as possible. 10* or more. And never even start the engine with a wideband in place, if the controller box isn't attached and powered or you can pretty much kiss your sensor goodbye.

I have built cable guides from 3/16 and 1/4 rods for the emergency brake cables to keep them from the exhaust and driveline. Just need to make them to where they bolt to the frame or body in your case, bend a full circle and use a screwdriver to spread the loop open enough that the cable will slide in. Your style of cable is easy to build, just use 3/16 steel cable, stainless if you can find it, then use a piece of ⅜ pencil rod about ½ long, drill a 3/16 hole for the cable to fit in and crimp it on with a hammer on a vise, measure the other end by running your cable through all the loops, through the equalizer at its shortest setting for adjustment and make sure the cables are tight. It's a cheap and easy way to make sure your emergency brake works like it should

of you ever need to run locking nuts on exhaust parts, they make nuts called "prevailing torque fasteners" that are suppose to stay torqued under extreme heat. ive ran them on exhaust manifold studs with great success

"Wow, you people have different size molds of 1.5, 1.6 + 1.7 inches? Aren't different molds expensive?" Nah dawg, we have a supplier in China that makes them 2 inches. Then they turn them on a lathe to the size desired. That shine comes from running some heat over them for a couple of seconds. Most likely that doesn't happen, but wouldn't surprise me if that does happen.

Nylon's glass temperature is 160°F so I guess you're softening the nylon lock every time the car runs, then it sets hard again when the car cools down. Clamping force is provided by the metal threads like any other normal nut. No harm but no advantage either.
