Building Cabin in the Woods Only 55 Square Feet

We build an off grid cabin in the woods and this video shows the building process start to finish on the outside of the cabin. The finished space is 55 square feet (5.1 square meters) and has a 30 square foot (2.8 square meter) loft. We'll have another video up soon of us building our furniture for the inside.

    Would have used set in place holddowns as opposed to tap cons. But solid work. Also I would have used an impact driver over a drill. And cantilevered deck for more living space.

    Ya we're really glad with how that turned out. No, we do have a pomoly stove but we're going to keep it for our tents since it's so portable and the stove we're gonna use is a little bigger so we can put bigger logs in to burn longer. Don't know if it's adequate honestly, this is our first cabin so we don't have anything to compare it to. The floor gets cold, but we bought warm slippers to leave there. I heard bat insulation in the floor is a nightmare when it comes to mice and rats so I did the foil insulation for simplicity more than effectiveness.

    How cool is this tiny house. This brings back so many sweet memories. My dad decided he was going to build a 2600 sq foot home on a lake. He was very smart and extremely handy but not a builder. The home was 2 story with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 car garage with attic and 3 foot crawl space. Each week one of my brothers would help my dad along with 1 brother who stayed the entire time. My mom and I did all the cooking and clean up plus helped wherever we could. From foundation to weather tight, it was 5 weeks. It was absolutely a gorgeous home when it was all finished with lots of custom extras. Pure genius how he did it. We shared many wonderful memories in our home. My parents have long passed on but the home lives on. Thank you for this amazing video.

As my parents aged, they couldn’t keep up with all the land, the home maintenance and the organic garden so they sold it and moved to Florida to be around their kids and grandkids. When my mom passed away, my dad moved in with us in another state until he passed away too. We have home movies showing him breaking ground and all the stages of building it. I sure miss that house but another family is enjoying now.

    Watching this reminds me of when I built my little 10x20 cabin in the 90's. A couple of things came to mind. First, I really wish I had power tools at the build site. My arms still ache 27 years later. Second, I really under-engineered my design. You use way more bracing than I did. Lastly, I really didn't know what I was doing. The cabin was all framed in and still stands today, though I never got around to finishing the inside or putting siding on (military things popped up). We go out to the property in Montana every couple of years and I'm always amazed that the cabin is still there. It's a little piece of my past.

    @@2withnature Hammering for hours driving 16 penny nails in over your head was awesome, but you haven't LIVED until you've cut OSB sheathing with a crappy hand saw! I tried to cut as much of the dimensional lumber as I could in Colorado, then drive it up to Montana when I was able to build. Not a lot of battery tools back then, that I could afford, and heard nothing but bad news about generators ruining AC equipment, so there I was. Ignorant, but willing.

    actually, i think you did know what you were doing. you made a 10 x 20 cabin while these people are making an idiotically small house with a loft and using lots of material to do it. They could have built a sturdy structure with a much larger footprint all on one floor without using lots of material. but they are virtue signaling as to what a small foot print they are making. everyone wants to see how tiny they can go because that's the latest fad. It's like when people make houses out of shipping containers and by the time they finish cutting out walls and windows and putting on a roof, or joining multiple containers together like a habitrail, family members climbing over each other all the time, they could have built a normal small house. even a 20 x 20 house with an open floor plan would go up quickly, and you could actually lay down on the floor and stretch your arms out without hitting a wall! imagine that!

  • @joel1239871

    @joel1239871

    While I agree with most of what you are pointing out, I do remember seeing a lot of tiny homes being built to skirt the zoning requirements and the endless requirements for a true "home" build. My property isn't too far from town, though the access and availability of inspectors is somewhat limited, so I could get away with many things. City builds really don't have a choice, either put it on a trailer or comply.@@edwardedward8139

    @scottalpert3444, same! She did help but I can see why this man is "built like a building" given he practically "built this whole building", he must run on "Energizer batteries!"😄For my critique, I'd ♥to have seen the sunset without the truck in the way, those colors @7:27 & @7:30 were spectacular! The stormy weather @26:12 was great too & the rainbow @34:35! This was so nice but I think it could use some LED lighting they could hook up to whilst occupying it. Maybe get creative and have some "flood lighting" when needed but also some low-level "burning lamp" style sconces for a sort of "camp fire light." It could also use some railing for the sides & front of the porch/the steps especially if you want to stand on the porch, lean on a rail and watch a sunset on one side or admire a rainbow on the other! I'm not sure how often they plan to be in it but even some window boxes with "fake flowers" add character and color. I'm not sure of the year-round weather there but they could maybe even put some perennials in the ground in front of the porch.

    @@2withnature I did! I moved out of the country! I'm signing a lifetime lease on undeveloped property this week, and after the lease is paid off this year, I will then start the process of building the house. In the meantime, I will be designing it and getting input on the layout of the house. Here, where I am, my monthly income has the real effect of living on $95,000, spending $25,000 on living expenses, $10,000 on myself, and the other $60,000 going towards savings/investment/etc. and a part of that going towards my house. I love it here! but in the American context, you need to ask people my age (late 50s-60s) what it's like when you have people S on you on account of your age and disability. Screw them. They don't believe I can do the job. That's how it's always been except for the lowest end jobs. That's why those of us born profoundly deaf call those jobs the "4 Fs", meaning floors, filth, flowers, and food. Even though many of us are degreed. Now, I'm watching you people over there lose yourselves over time. It's looking BAD. It would be reverse culture shock if I went back to visit, as I've been out of the country for 5.5 years, and I only visited once in early 2019 for a death in the family. I know it's going to get even worse than this because the demons in power are causing this, and I see it becoming more evident that even they are losing control of themselves, pushing themselves to do things they hadn't thought would be possible without consequences for them. It's over.

But hopefully standing apart mentally and developing self-reliance will be enough to weather the storm. I'm glad you've found a good place though, don't be daunted by the build. It’s nice to see the attention to detail like getting the cuts right, making sure the waterproof sheet overlaps to OUTSIDE, redoing the stairs up to house, etc. The small points that culminate with a good build. I’ve installed toilets, gypsum board walls, redone bathtub units, but never built a house. Just love watching craftsmen do a job uncompromising because it is so difficult to do things right (especially when a heavy board doesn’t fit right or screw can’t be reached by drill bit). Also kudos to your partner as sometimes it’s not easy being around a person fully committed to a build as it can take over your psyche.

It’s hard to find time, so we make time. She’s an artist( paints) and I Cross stitch. I’m always figuring out a way to combine the two. It’s not building a house, but our marriage is built on a rock😊

    Awesome build! I built an 8x8 cabin all out of scrap material. Mine isn’t as tall, but has a loft over the porch.

    That's awesome! We debated the loft over porch idea but ultimately we won't know if we chose right until after we furnish the inside. I wish I could've done this with scrap though.
