Building an Open-Source Tool for Cave Surveying
Ғылым және технология
Phil spent years groveling in mud trying to map caves. He shows you how he found a better way, using open source software and electronics!
Join Phil, an avid caver, as he recounts his journey of creating a cutting-edge cave surveying tool. Reflecting on his experiences in the 1990s, where primitive equipment like mechanical compasses and cumbersome tape measures hindered exploration efforts, Phil recognized the need for a more effective solution!

What a great project for Cavers
that project realyl has come to age and maturity!
I found the Bosch BNO055 to be a good inertial sensing unit that gives you a 9 axis IMU with a UART and I2C built in and its easy to get absolute headings and real compass readings.

I did look at this. Unfortunately the magnetometer within it is not accurate enough for my needs, we need sub-degree accuracy. I did like the autocalibration feature of it though ..
I would love to see a seismic surveying tool. I have lots of caves with no entrance exit, but could make one if I knew where to start digging.
Thanks 👍
Totally encourage OpenSource, but it can sometimes be difficult to include too many options in a hardware design (ie different displays, Pico boards, etc). For me it's the journey of developing that's fun, not just the result.
Is there a uk supplier of the laser modules? I have only found the suppliers website and I had to have a sit down when I saw the shipping cost!
For my spiders project I knew it was going to be used by someone else so that did influence the choice of software and hardware
