    nothing to see here. I didn't know it but one night the mechanic was throwing pins after my ball hit. I thought I could hit anywhere and strike. I was bowling the guy on the other team for high avg. I shot 266, 268 before he had to do other stuff. he told me later after he asked how I bowled he did it because that guy bitched at him about lane conditions over & over so he got tired of it. he couldn't bitch that night because I bowled 'good" against him. I mean I would hit Brooklyn , leave a 6 pin and out of the sky a pin would hit it. I would hear that guy say 'geezus' after some of my 'carrys'. but,..... there was one guy who had 4-5 revs on his ball. a lefty. just when you think there's no way he's gonna hit the 2 pin, his ball woulf do the final 3 revs hooking 5 boards/rev. one old-timer said he was using a "doe-doe (do-do?) ball. lots of side weight . I always did good with max side weight but haven't tried 3oz max yet. I think it creates a more spin-type action off your hand.

    In a house tournament, there was a guy who's ball was going 5 feet longer and snapping 5 boards stronger than anyone else. In 7th or 8th frame of the second game, his finger grip went flying out and so didn't about 1/2 roll of nickels. This was back in the early 2000's when some finger inserts were capped on the bottom, so we would have never known if the grip didn't go flying.

    Had a Brunswick power groove back in the day I got off eBay. Had a different pro shop drill it in Goshen Indiana. Took to a IYSBT Tournament 45 foot heavy volume sport shot nobody was hooking anything pretty much straight up 16 with a heavy oil ball and pray to carry. After 4 games beating my head against the wall I thought I’ll take my new power groove and throw at the pocket off the corner, Instead I ended up playing 5th arrow out to two board and shooting 256 game 6. Fast forward I get it on a scale I’m told the pin was miss marked from Brunswick and the pro shop must not have checked it after drilling as it had 6.5 onces of side weight

    You know if you take the inserts out of a yellow dot, put some metal tubes in the holes, put it on a cookie sheet, and place it in the oven. When you can put a nail into the shell and pull it out and the hole closes up it is done. As long as the durometer punched 72 you were golden. Talk about opening up the foot-print of the ball. Also back in my time, people would drill the finger holes deeper and put coins under the inserts. One time this guy rolled the ball the inserts came out and coins went all over the lane.

    I know of a couple... Had a guy (drilled his own stuff) drill a ball completely upside down. Also had someone (when the no weight hole rule came out) drill their weight hole to 1 3/8" and full depth. Then used a band saw to cut the thumb slugs and used an 1/8 of the slug to fill the hole (putting it 1/4" from the top) once the glue "dried" he would put plug over top of it. Only found this out when we redrilled a ball into the weight hole and hit urethane then the bit just... Fell. The "fun one" would be to do this to an older ball from the 70s or 80s. What do I mean? Something like an old yellow dot (same thing with the bolts) then soak it in MEK and see if it can compete with a modern ball

    I had a great idea for a video for you. You and the pro ir pros of your choice should do a highest score across the entire alley challenge. If you strike or spare, you keep bowling on that lane until you have a score recorded in the current frame. Once all the lanes have been bowled, add up all the scores.

    A buddy told me that back in the 80’s when the lanes were fried on C squad a guy put 3 and 1 oil on a rag to keep his ball on line. So when he wiped off his black angle it actually looked shiny going down the lane instead of it being dull like they were out of the box 🤣

    Bowling in a college bowling club, there was a guy that threw an 18 pound ball and a 20 pound ball on some league nights, that was way over the legal limit allowed. He had them custom-made because he felt a 16 pound ball was too late for him to throw down then. Was very inaccurate overall and only averaged about mid 160s. Keep in mind though this week was unsanctioned too.

    Back in the day (80's and 90's) at the High Roller in Vegas there were always bowlers that would crush the sweepers using a piece of equipment that would magically not show up to be used in the actual High Roller event (where they checked the equipment). So while I don't know exactly how they were illegal likely they were.

    I did this as a joke ball 20plus years ago. I took a 1 3/8 bit as deep as I could but didn't stop there. I pitched the hole all the way forward still using the same entry hole. Repeat left pitch, right pitch and reverse pitch. I then filled it with lead fishing weights. I did this on the right side (negative side for a right hander) of the ball and would bet people they couldn't hook the ball. The ball had over a pound of negative weight. This ball would literally back up. (Funny note a left-handed customer loved it as he could hook the lane). Did this to an old Ebonite Turbo C.

    Just read Mo Pinel’s paper on this. Side weight has very little effect on ball motion. Cover stock is 90% ball motion followed by core specs

  • @travishanson166

    @travishanson166

    Жыл бұрын

    Side weight and core dynamics dictate how much fresh cover sees the lane. Packy added flare separation so the ball read in the oil earlier, putting a bigger footprint of the cover on the lane surface. Had it gone the other way, and there was no flare at all, the ball would skid past the end of the pattern, making almost no move at all. While MO is technically correct, the cover has to win the battle between the lane surface and the core to make any motion at all. By placing the bolts on his pap, it is preventing the core from flipping and rolling out, essentially aiding the cover to maintain its control of the situation, so it continues to pull to the right, around the direction of the side weight.

  • @MrICURNVS

    @MrICURNVS

    They tested up to 6oz side weight on throwbot.. it had almost zero effect on ball motion.. weight holes have way way more effect as it changes core dynamics..

    We had a guy in a sport shot league that hid an abralon pad in his rag and was keeping his surface fresh every time he wiped his ball down. I caught him at the end of game 2, but this was about five weeks into the league no telling how long he had been doing it.

    I actually have a few. There was a guy in my winter league when i first started adult leagues who not over exaggerating had a square hole like 2.5x2.5 inches for his thumb and would seriously chisel it out at league. The other is our old lane man Fred R.I.P told us a story about a guy in league who's ball got stuck in the return and he pulled it out put it on the return and a half roll of taped quarters came out of the weight hole.

    One of my HS teammate's dad did a tournament at an alley about 15 years ago and this alley didn't have automatic score counters. You had to do it by hand. These two old ladies were keeping score for the tournament and were talking the whole time and not paying 100% attention. So they would periodically just ask him "you threw a strike this frame right?" He would say "of course, even though he hadn't thrown lol

    So I have actually put a roll of dimes into a blue dot. I rolled in an unsanctioned league one night in a little hole in the wall place (lots of money flying around) and I let those guys keep their money 😂. I told them about the experiment but that thing would continue through the pocket so well, they thought I was Maximum Bob!

    Wasn't necessarily cheating, but about got himself kicked out of a tournament, but a kid I was crossing with at a youth tournament was struggling, so he decided to cover his ball in EZ slide and throw it down the lane. Left powder marks where he'd put it thickest about 30 feet down the lane.

  • @MrOsmodeus

    should have marked your PAP before you altered the ball and afterwards so you could see the difference. given the balls flaring the weight at your pap is probably migrating to full rolling so the weight is end over end making it the most stable it can be. but you didn't mark up the ball as for extra cheating, you could have cleaned the ball midgame and then altered the surface

    The balls are so strong now, it makes side weight pretty inconsequential. Since I have been back bowling after 20 years off, I have left a couple pocket 6 pins as a right hander which was virtually impossible 30 years ago.

    @@ripvanrevs I started leaving pocket 6 pins(right handed) within the last two years as well. As for the illegal ball, mine was very finicky about how I got out of it. Ended up tossing it in the 🗑.
