Building an Easy Automatic Pig Watering System

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Pigs require a lot of water and tend to turn their watering dish into a wallow. We get some food grade barrels and turn them into a pig watering system using hog watering valves and bulkhead gaskets. We also show you what we do with all our extra eggs with the help of a Sun Oven.

There are just somethings that light up a homesteader’s world - manure, pallets, and food grade storage barrels. 💖 I love those hose nozzles. I still have the other one on the hose in my garden because I can get a gentle spray for my more delicate herbs, etc. But those nozzles are awesome for washing and spraying down a dusty grazing area. One of the issues we have had with the nipples is if they can get hot if they get any amount of sun and then the animals don’t want to drink from them. We bungee’d and zip tied an old beach umbrella to one of ours one summer. It looked ghetto but worked well. Also, consider mosquito netting over the top where there’s an opening. Hope things are going well. I’ve enjoyed watching your journey. 👍🏼

You should move the water barrel to someplace that has shade so the water will stay cool. Neat idea.

To keep the little chick food away from the big birds: build a box about 3-4' square, maybe 1' high. 3 sides are impenetrable by all chickens, a solid back wall and hardware cloth on either end. You'll want a solid roof for weather protection. Across the front place sticks vertcally roof to ground, leaving space between just enough for the small chicks to get through but no adult chickens can reach the food that you've placed close to the back wall! I've seen this on Permaculture Chickens (Justin Rhoades) over a year ago and it works marvelously yet still allows the chicks free range with mama! 😀

Great vid. I love listening to the "happy" clucking when you threw down some chicken feed. Then when she walked away and was clucking to the chicks... Chickens are so much fun to watch. Love the pigs too. They need a little scratching post! Could probably make one with and old stiff bristle shop broom. LOL!

Watching her teach the chicks and listening to the different “words” she says to them has been awesome. They develop so much faster and more naturally with a brooding hen than they ever could being hand raised by people even under the best circumstances. The only negative is they are harder to train to come when you call them but the adult birds seem to be teaching them that. It’s just cool 😎👍🏻

Yeah I agree. When I got my chickens and they were out foraging in the yard, every time one would find a big bug or a worm or some ants, they would start that "happy" clucking. Then all the others would come running and it was like a football game! LOL! I always told them that if they would just shut up, they would get to eat it all! They never listened! LOL!

Pigs wallows are the best fun I don’t know if you have doormats in America made from coconut fibre they are brown and very bristley we used to wrap one around a fence post and sink it into the ground inside a pigs pen or yard and the pigs used to have a great deal of fun scratching themselves on it you should try it

Let me guess, who had the camera today -- hmmmmm Jeremy is SLAVING under the scorching sun, while Jaime has gone to the birds !!!! Those brass nozzles are the best, mom and dad had one back in 1965 and it lasted until one of the kids (not me) lost it in the late 90's . Oh and I am extremely jealous, the ice finally melted on the lake on Saturday (Sink-o-de-mayo, or really sink-o-de-boat -- those plugs, nasty things to forget to check before leaving the dock)

What you can do with the small bung on the drum is put in some kind of float with a stick on it or a pulley at the top and a rope (where the pigs can't reach it) and a float on the inside and a weight on the outside that hangs down and shows the level of the water. Thanks for posting, the pigs and chickens are great.

Hi ya Jeremy, Jaime!! I love the things y’all teach and share! I always thought putting a faucet n a barrel for a water catchment system would be complicated, as well as the nipples for the pigs, I’m glad I saw u do it, wow, it’s easy! Though I’d have to rig up something to hold the outside part in place while I craw inside to screw on the inside part, Lol, I’m short. I’m seriously happy how easy this is to do!!! Thank u

a simple hack on how to tell when your water is getting low in barrel is to remove 3/4 inch bung on top. Get a piece of four foot wood or fiberglass rod and attach a cork on end and put through the 3/4 bung .. this acts as a floating dipstick and you can see from a distant when water is low without opening barrel .plus it acts as a vent to keep a vacuum from being formed as they drink water

(20 acres with a pond/lake with fish on it) thinking pigs, goats cattle etc on 20 acres should be sufficient but lots of projects to do. Also gonna have to research on how to keep the pond legitimately clean / to use water smart as well as a hydroponics system to make greens etc. ofcourse ducks and chicks are another project waiting to happen. Not gonna lie either, the rush for solar power off the grid like farm is my goal.

Looks like a good water solution!!! We have heard that spraying pigs with cold water can kill them.... we do not know if this is a fact or not as when we had our many different seasons of pigs we did not have running water near them so they were never near any hoses!!! LOL! We had to pump every gallon of water by hand and bring the water over by the barrel... so we never had a lot to waste! If you find out that this is indeed true or false... please share with us all. Thanks for sharing!!

I just got some kune kunes this weekend, and im having the same issue with muddy drinking water. So one of these is definitely in my future. Did the pigs take naturally to the nipples or did you have to put something on them to show them how to use them?

They are very smart. Just show them how it works a couple times.

My favorite kind of nozzle, but I think it's a "he" not "she" ;-) Nice pig barrel!
