Building a Walnut Trestle Dining Table

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video you will be watching a walnut trestle table build based on a table from Andy Rawls.
Some of the equipment used during the project is a hammer K3 sliding table saw and a hammer A3-31 joiner/planer combo machine. The process is long, but a ton of fun. Enjoy.

    Nice, I really like the look of this table. One question (for anyone): How do you know when breadboard ends are needed to help keep the top flat? I see so many tables of this style with the breadboard ends... and I prefer without.

  • @prestonhoffman5695

    Keith Carlson, As you know the bread board ends are there to assist in keeping the table flat. I didn’t do a very good job showing you how my horizontal stretchers keep the table flat, but the Wood Whisperer does. Check out his KZread video on his trestle table build below at the 15 minute mark. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJt2lsxpdMrOgZM.html I used the same method he used. If you watch his whole series on that table you will find that he doesn’t like the look of bread board ends either. Avoiding bread board ends is possible, but you definitely need something to keep the table flat. Another option is a Sliding Dovetail. Check out Ishitani furniture. Here is a link to his table build. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGV4qM-wite8nLQ.html I hope that helps. Best of luck with your build.

    Hi Preston, I'm interested in the DeWalt clamp you're using on the slider. I'm looking for something that's easier than the Felder clamp I have. I'm assuming it's a DWS5026. How well does it work? Very nice table. Bill

    Beautiful table. Also, cool table saw. Which version of the K3 is that? I'm curious if you looked at the Felder machines when you got it (500, 700 series). on the other end of the spectrum, did you consider the grizzly compact slider? You'll have to do a tour of your shop sometime.

  • @prestonhoffman5695

    @prestonhoffman5695

    6 жыл бұрын

    The K3 version is the 48 x 48 and I really like it. I wasn’t sure about a short stroke slider at first, but I think it works out great. I did consider a Felder machine, but they were a little outside my price range st the time. Maybe some day when I upgrade. My real interest is to restore a vintage Oliver sliding table saw. If I find one at the right price I will post KZread videos on the restoration. I looked into the Grizzly and it looked like a great price point machine, but calibrations on these machines can be finicky and I wasn’t sure Grizzly tolerances would meet my expectations. I already owned a Hammer A3-31 and that is arguably the best tool I own. It’s performance/reliability has just been phenomenal, so I decided to stay in the Hammer family for my table saw.

    Wow Preston, this is absolutely incredibly craftsmanship and the final product is stunning. What kind of finish did you use on this and if you have the time to answer why did you filter it beforehand?

  • @prestonhoffman5695

    @prestonhoffman5695

    6 жыл бұрын

    Craig Flack, Thanks Craig! I used General Finishes Arm R Seal Satin. It’s basically a urethane resin topcoat. I used the filter because this product had been sitting on my shelf for a while, which can cause some solution separation. The filter removes all the impurities or solids that formed during that process. It also removes any dust that may have gotten in the container. I applied several coats of the arm r seal followed by wet sanding at 400 grit. My final finishing method was 0000 steel wool and Behlen “Wool-Lube”, which makes for a great satin finish (think brushed steel). I hope this answers your questions. If you have anymore feel free to contact me anytime. I really enjoy this stuff.

    Matthew Clemente, I typically use DeWalt track saw clamps (as seen at time 2:56). I will provide the Amazon link to the clamps below. They work really well for almost every kind of cut and they are quick action (similar to IRWIN clamps). I think Festool makes clamps that work the same, but their clamps are far more exorbitant. The DeWalt clamps also work with the Festool track saw. www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWS5026-TrackSaw-Track-Clamps/dp/B001J31PJM

    How many board feet of lumber did you use for this table and where do you buy that much walnut?

  • @prestonhoffman5695

    @prestonhoffman5695

    5 жыл бұрын

    I don’t know the exact board feet, but I provided a link to the sketch up file in the description if you want to get an exact calculation, but I think it’s around 100 board feet. The Walnut is all locally sourced. It’s pretty common in the Midwest where I am at to find Walnut at the sawmill. Going to a sawmill and buying your lumber rough is the key to saving money on lots of Walnut though.
