Building a Universal Constructor: a Conversation with David Deutsch

Ғылым және технология

Could we build a machine that can carry out any task? The meta-framework "Constructor Theory" suggests we might be able to make such a universal constructor. David Deutsch discusses the implications of such a machine for physics, for the economy, and for humans. Deutsch also talks about problems in funding for fundamental physics, with reporter Logan Chipkin.

8:50 what it would mean if a universal constructor wasn’t possible 16:50 you’ll make money in a post constructor society by creating and encoding knowledge/transformations that people want 19:45 the smallest possible universal constructor aka the protomolecule from expanse 21:00 leaving the traditional funding path and sustaining his own research

Interesting, and nice introduction by Dr. Zeeya. Whould like to know if what DD. says about funding of basic research is related to the UK or he considers that as a global problem. In her book 'Lost in Math', Sabine Hossenfelder mentioned similar problems.

Is the replicator on Star Trek a universal constructor? 🤔🖖

It's not the job of physicists to explain why economics is such a clown-show. Stop asking them about it. Start asking economists.
