Building a Squarebody Truck? Watch this first!!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I headed out to the high desert this week to score a killer one ton squarebody! It may look pretty rough to the untrained eye but let me walk you through why you shouldn't overlook these trucks!

Great find! I'm in the NE, you ain't kidding about rust! I actually just saw a 91 K5 not too far from me, ad says new floor pans, and it supposedly runs and drives, just needs an exhaust. Doesn't look like a complete rust bucket, for 3K I'm very tempted.

I just bought my first squarebody truck about a week ago. 86 dually 4 speed 4x4. Sweet truck. Partially inpired by this channel for sure. Need to brag to someone about my shade tree mechanic skills. It died in my driveway as soon as i got it home. Replaced the starter with an OEM one and after that i had no power to the dash. Figured out the wires to the starter had gotten burned and when i replaced it i tore the final few strands of copper. I just got back inside from rewiring the entire starter system from the battery back and am happy to report that it is working!!! Keep them squares on the road!! They sure are easy to wrench on.

Heck yea man. It’s all pretty basic. It’s just usually covered with 30 years of mud and oil and fuel that it’s tough to tell what’s what!? Nice work though.

@MerricksGarage Thanks! Yeah! It's super easy as a first car to work on. You just kinda look at it and it's obvious what's wrong- there's not that many parts. It was running funny earlier this week so I got out the old flashlight and figured out one of the distributor wires popped off. Easy fix, good as new.

if that truck has a CC dually axle (14 bolt as you mentioned) as opposed to the dana 70 that came in the pickups, its extremely easy to convert it to SRW. CC dually 14 bolts and SRW 14 bolts use the same housing with different hubs (and i believe different backing plate location). throw SRW hubs on that thing and a weld on disc brake conversion kit and youre done. you can even reuse the axle shafts that are already in it.

It always amazes me what Chevy/Dodge KP 60s go for these days!! I remember when you could get em for $400 lol Hell I bought the Chevy KP 60 in my Jeep for just over 3k with ARB Reid's 300M RCVs High Steer all ready to go. Hell even the brake pads were still new lol. Now its easily a 5 or 6k Axle 🤯🤯

@@MerricksGarage Of course it depends on the deal you get of course. To bad gas is so expensive or it might be worth it to bring parts from my area to yours to sell. Some of my buddies make fun of me for having so many axles hanging around but I've forever told them 'the front 60 never goes down in price'. Been right for the last 20 years I've been doing this. Good investment and hard for somebody to just steal one at 500lbs lol.
