When your creek runs dry, dig down a couple or three feet, ok, about 1 meter, right in the center of the dry creek bed. You will likely find water there. the water table obviously has dropped, and the creek has dried, but you might be lucky to find the top of the 'new' top of water table in a hole at center of creek.

It makes me sad to see that the drought affects Austria so much. We have it here in Eastern Germany, too, lots of trees in the forrest next to our garden died and fell down on the telephone line during the winter storms this year. And Borki Borkenkäfer also does its thing. It is 2 minutes before 12 and I heard today in the radio that there was a conference in Jena, Thuringia of people from different professions talking about the forrest. I'm lucky that they finally came together, but this should have happened much earlier. STay safe.

When cutting, don't use the middle of the blade to saw bigger logs. Use the teeth on the body of the saw to bite and angle down and move/repeat. Gives you more control. For small branches use the tip like you did. Nice video Lilly!

Yeah, here, too. In Leipzig suburbs and around we have that well in our garden and it always had plenty of water though it is just 6m deep, but last 3 years we had to be really careful because this is not only water for watering, but also for drinking. And last year the wather depth remaining was just 1,5 m. There are draiage channels between the forrest and our garden, which I can remember from my childhood had always water in except for the hot summertime and they are dry, too sind 4 years ongoing. This is a serious problem.

These videos of your camp are my favourites.👍😁 It extremely likely that there is water underground at the bottom of this ravine. I recall you saying that this land is owned by your cousin. He might give you permission to put in and small hand pump well. [it’s a small pipe with holes in the wall that you drive down into the ground with the hand pump mech on top] Water seeps in the through the holes and fills up the pipe, and the mech on top causes suction to bring it up.

Even though I have a 1Kw photovoltaic system, here in NW Montana. The cloudy dark winters reduce output to around 10 percent, so will use kerosene lamps. Veggie oil can also be used in these lamps. My antique lamps put out a surprising amount of light. Wicks last longer but have spares. A small and portable storm lantern can easily and safely carried into the woods and kerosene, or diesel ,has a very long shelf life. I would consider propositioning and cashe's in the woods. Karosene lanterns are extremely reliable and an excellent back up to modern technology. Redundant redundancy is needed.

Tunnel Rabbit, Id like to know your technique for using veggie oil in a kero lamp. My own experiments have not worked well which coincides with what others have experienced on other utube videos. It seems that veggie oil will only follow a wick for about an inch to an inch and a half before the flames starves from lack of fuel. If you have found a way around that please share it. Veggie oil works great with a floating wick and I did see a video of what he called a "chunk lite" lamp, where he heavily modified a kero lamp and with a specific canning jar as the fuel tank, had good success but the lamp assembly was so highly modified it lost most of the advantages of it being a lamp was probably unsafe to use with kero. My best effort so far gave me about a 2 hour burn with a standard lamp assembly fitted to a canning jar, filled to the brim which starved out once the oil level reaches the bottom of the jar threads. I would love to be able to use the more sustainable and cheaper fuels in my lamps and would be happy to hear any tips you may have. Folks do have better results with olive oil but that is far more expensive and in a different class of fuel than "veggie" oil, plus my wife can't stand olive oil's smell so its out for me. Lol thanks

@@richardelliott9511 I cheat by using a small portion of old and rancid olive in with kerosene. Anyone can create their own fuel blend using any oil, but do not use gasoline (benzine) in a blend intended for lamps. Straight '''veggie' oil in a primitive lamp can work, but the light is very dim, and it is not a proper lamp.

Try some warm white LED bulbs, it's the color temperature of the light you want. Cool white is harsh but good for working under, warm white is easier on the eyes and more relaxing, like candela light or older incandescent bulbs. You'll get the color and energy savings with warm white LEDs something around the 3000K color temp.

I think I remember it mentioned that when the clay flakes off after firing, a likely cause is uneven heating, or heating too fast or having parts too thick which are both basically also uneven heating. If the clay heats up unevenly, some parts will contract while others do not. If the pottery is too thick or the heating too fast, the outside material forcibly contracts while the inside does not, causing it to tear and fracture in the border between the two different zones. For a basic firing plan, I'd recommend doing it in 3 stages: Sit them NEXT to the fire, sit them ON the fire, then sit them IN the fire. I don't know what kind of timescales you want to work with. You'll have to look up some info for that. Also, adjust for thickness.

0:46 Hello Lilly have you looked up from where the creek flows I was thinking maybe it diverted somehow? I don't know just guessing here. But you got eyes on the ground That happened to me before. I had a place like this in the woods and had a creek flowing suddenly it dried up like I followed it up about 2 miles up some Geologists dug up the ground looking for minerals. IDK Gold maybe they did so much damage it forked off in a different direction It was a mess. And humans found my bug out too. :) so I just abandoned it all together. Whats crazy is I built it far away from my Community Almost 20 kms away In the deep woods. But there was a road cut out a couple years ago for logging purposes. Crazy how things work. But my structure still stands. sort of. Great video by the way. :)

Dig a well were the creek was. It is quite possible to make a shallow well. It can be concealed when not in use by yourself. a 2 meter deep hole is possible, but make the side sloped and lined with something, if even only log poles, so that is does not cave in. I've felled many very large trees with that same saw. I used multi weight bar oil that is lower in viscosity, especially in winter temperatures as the oil pump is a small and weak. I also use Aviation fuel (benzine for aircraft) as this fuel will stay good for up to 10 years. But this fuel does not start saw easily during the winter, so I use propane from a bottle to start the saw.

A bit overkill yes, but everything fits in 70L backpack inc. sleeping bag and axe, and where I live it could go anytime better be prepared for cold weather rather not have it

When our creeks on our property would go dry. We would track up creek and usually would a diversion or blocking of the creek by small animals an or debris.

Thank you for the vid. Regarding the stream, being that it is wet all around, I am thinking: - someone has dammed the stream further up - the stream bed has finally become so steep that water just runs off and does not exist long as a stream

Lilly: How far upstream have you walked. There might be a natural obstruction that you can move with a little work or someone has dammed up the creek. If they have then it would be time to tell them take it down or you'll call the authorities. I don't know your laws, but here in the state you can't dam a natural water way without authorization. GOOD VIDEO THANK YOU

Here in Texas we have such laws but, things can be done to catch flood water that are called basins that are not dams. Lily could build one of those if laws allow. They help to prevent flooding, erosion and conserve water for wildlife.

If you collect standard discarded “dead” warm white LED bulbs, and carefully open the enclosure, you will find there’s a bunch of SMT LEDs inside wired in series, a driver circuit and with one dead LED, causing the bulb to fail. I have carefully removed the LEDs and reassembled them on copper strip board in 3’s in parallel, and these can be run either with a 12 v DC LED driver or even just a wirewound resistor. And it works great as a super efficient warm white 12V LEDs. I do this because low voltage warm white LEDs are expensive, and typically found in expensive RVs, where as discarded LEDs are free, or even new warm white ones are only $3-$4.

It’s possible you have dried up the creek by removing all that standing dead wood allowing more sun and wind at the forest floor. It doesn’t take much to throw the immediate area out of whack. It’s a bit like dominos.

hmm I just had a thought Lilly ...what if someone closed off the creek with a dam on their property a little higher up from where you are ...to create a pond for a duck or a goose farm they might have ...or maybe they placed some sort of a water pump at the spring were the creek begins ...you need to follow the trail to the source to find out why they are drying up

Lilly, it would be interesting to learn more about the dry creek situation in a future episode. Have you followed the creek up toward its source, on foot, on maps and satellite view? Maybe there is something, whether artificial or natural, that has diverted the water, like a housing development, road work, mud slide or a beaver dam. Or maybe the source was a hydro-thermal spring out of the side of a mountain that has dried up.

While growing up at parent's place we had a canal that always had water, then beavers moved in now here it 20 years later and the beavers are gone so has the water and water used to be 4-6 feet deep now its dry as bone, nephew's have been clearing all the junk that had accumulated over the years out of the canal " in case it starts having water again"; most places are having drought issues and others are having flooding problems it doesn't seem to level out; the canal is part of the Old Erie Canal that was hand dug decades ago that used to have miles tow the boats by that was during my grandfather's earlier years and before my dad was born

The creek could've dried up due to several reasons, one being someone build a house somewhere near its spring, or the waterflow simply changed and it's comming up in another place. This was one of the reasons villages used to be moved around all the time in like prehistory.
