Building a Prerunner with a Harbor Freight welder.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There has been a ton of fab and welding on the Silverado PreRunner down at my shop. Really happy with how things are coming together and stoked that after 5 years, my Harbor Freight welder is still as reliable as the day I got it!

Drop the cage through the floor then weld the areas up top. Or cut a patch in the roof and do the same. Then weld up the areas you cut. Not sure how to feel about that halo gusset idea.

9:31 I'm kind of concerned about that "halo" design there. The A pillar design doesn't seem to be nearly as strong as it should be. Those tubes really need to be landing fully on each other, not on an offset guesst like that. Not landing properly is basically the same thing as not having a 360 weld, as far as structural integrity goes... It might be a good idea to reassess some of the cage design and redo it properly.

Lol it’s gonna be fine. The cage was prefab and we are using what we can and replacing what is needed. There is a lot more strengthening and gusset work to come.

If this thing ever rolls at speed someone is going to get hurt or killed. Take a step back and look at every crush point, dead tube etc Lol it’s gunna be fine is you taking the lazy road. All of that tube work should be thrown in the recycle bin

This is absolutely how not to build a cage pathetic work and to have someone actual pay for this is crazy. Horrible tube layout, dead tubes, tube sleeves, how the b pillar is tied to the frame. Come on man this is horrible. Poor customer has thousands in parts and see what you call high level of build is ridiculous.

I just left a comment on his newer video of it, but yeah I completely agree w you. They got all the right parts for a sweet build but the cage is ruining it. They need to do research and look how the pros do it, or better yet buy a wiy cage designed for this truck.

Quite running downhill mig welds. Seriously. Do a bend test and see. I guarantee those welds will break. Mig welds are deceiving- you can make a nice looking mig weld that has very little penetration. There’s a reason why most structural, or pressure vessel welds use either TIG, stick, or flux core dual shield processes and are run up-hill only. You will be hard pressed to find any code ASME, AWS etc that allow any down hill welds other than pipeline and they are using stick rod specifically designed or down hill welding at 150-200+ amps.

Cut and etch is an easier test for most of us. I don't even have a vice/bench strong enough for a bend test, but everybody has a chopsaw. It's shocking how weak downhill mig really is. I'd prefer to find out in the shop rather than in a rollover.

Exactly Downhill mig welds should be illegal.
