Building a Portable Forge: Blacksmith's Forge Design & Build -

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I make some improvements on my "Junk Forge". This solid fuel forge is a pretty straight-forward build using materials that shouldn't be too hard to source at your local steel yard. When completed, I'll be able to fuel the forge with either coal or charcoal

It's still on the list :) It's winter here now but I'd like to get back into doing some smithing when it warms up a bit.

I recommend the slider (which is intended to size the fire box) to be fitted with a vent cover. Simply a piece of bar stock which covers the part of the slit in the bottom which is not used. The vent covering could also act as the handle? Most likely it is more practical to use a piece of threaded rod and a nut setup to move the wall back and forth. Also I would make a (possibly screw on) piece of the off cut 12 gauge sheet metal to the top of the slider wall to cover the part of the hole you are not using to prevent coal from getting trapped. The piece of sheet metal would sit on top of the sheetmetal in the table and simply slide along. The piece you cut out to make the fire hole rotated 90 degrees should work and for a wide range of movement.

Good idea. I may do something like that. I may just position stuff into place where I think I want it to go, get some time in on the forge before I make anything permanent. Thanks for watching, cheers!

To assist with portability, you could attach some wheels to the top frame, so when you remove the legs you can just wheel it away, rather than carry it. Also, you might be able to put the bolts on the sides of the frame so when you loosen the bolt, the leg will fold into the frame and not have to be disconnected entirely. Interesting stuff. I'm new to the channel, I look forward to more interesting stuff :)

Good ideas, Troy and welcome to the channel! I had considered making it folding, but I wasn't sure how sturdy the legs I was planning would be so I went the bolts route. I do want to make a small folding workbench/work table, so this would be a good way to prove out some of the concepts.

do you have any problem with clinkers with the narrow air inlet? is there any way to get rid of the clinkers?

That's a great observation. I haven't even had a chance to use this forge though my plan was just to pull out the big/stuck ones with a hook/poker/fire tongs.

I hope so. The forge is basically complete but it has been hard to find time to do blacksmithing let alone finish the video!

What kind of speed controller is that? Where did you get it? Did you ever finish the build? If you lost footage, at least show us what you ended up with. Good, bad, and ugly...

How are you going to remove ashes and clinkers?

Since you need to be actively managing a coal fire anyway, I plan on breaking clinkers with a poker and pulling them out with a rake. If it becomes a burden, I will consider adding a breaking mechanism. The blower manifold is going to slide on and have a trap that can be emptied into a bucket. I am trying to get it wrapped up this week but we will see!

Hack 'n Build: your construction materials are mostly mild steel, the brake drum is something much harder and more heat resistant, and is of course not pieced together. By accident you have stumbled on the shape of the fire pot used in the past but made as one piece of cast iron. Please do a follow up video, say six months from now after you've put some forge time in on how well the firebox is doing. If the welds hold and the steel doesn't burn through, the design looks splendid. In the first part of this video, I think your outrageous fuel consumption is due as much to too strong of air forcing as it is to forge design. Once you get charcoal hot enough, it should retain that heat with far less forced air, particularly in a four sided deep pot such as you have built.

This forge will definitely be used in upcoming videos, hopefully many to come. I am learning a lot by trying and failing, and of course getting suggestings from other smiths. I'll definitely do a recap on how well it holds up, that's a great suggestion! Thanks for watching, cheers!
