Forge Build: No Welding Required

Free Tool List Here startblacksmithing.com
This forge is inexpensive (less than $200 of materials) and extremely versatile. I have used it quite a bit and have very pleased with results. This video is intended to give you the big picture / concept so you can build a version of it for yourself. I have included details about materials below - but please understand that every forge is different and you will need to adapt this concept to fit your burner, bricks, fuels system, etc. If you are the type of person who is ambitious enough to build a forge I'm sure you will be able to figure this out!
MATERIALS I USED:
Fire Brick bit.ly/2Caj9ci
Propane Burner ebay.to/2TAgJh9
2x2x1/8 Angle Iron - Local Metal Yard
3/16 x 1 1/4 Flat Bar - Local Metal Yard
7/16 All Thread with Nuts and Washers amzn.to/2UrvJLE
CUTS AND OTHER DETAILS:
All holes are drilled 1/2" diameter
2x2x1/8 ANGLE IRON CUTS:
2 pcs @ 24" (holes at 1", 13", 23"... one left one right)
4 pcs @ 9" (no holes) - if you want the hearth make 2 of these 18-1/2"
3/16" x 1-1/4" FLAT BAR CUTS:
2pcs @ 11-1/2" (holes at 5/8" , 10-3/4")
ALL THREAD CUTS:
4 pcs @ 12" and 2- 7/16" x 1" bolts (If you are building with the plate top and hearth you will need to make these longer!)
Having a plate on top is extremely useful and I highly recommend it. Drill the holes in your plate to accept the all thread.
Yeah, I know these instructions are a little rough - but you will get it!

I am an electrician (read: amateur accidental welder), and I have recently jumped into metal working. Up to now, my forge has been a bunch of sand in my wheelbarrow with a pipe sticking in the bottom and my wife's hair dryer blowing into it. I am getting a little bit better, and I think the time has come to build myself a proper forge. In other words, I'm getting ready to build this one. Thank you for making this information so easy to absorb, and for helping keep the trades alive!

For anyone building this, there is one piece missing from the cut list in the description - you need 5, not 4, 9" 2x2x1/8 angle lengths, and the 5th needs holes drilled 1" from either end. It's mentioned in the video, but not in the cut list. Also, having built one, I'm now disassembling to add a piece of all thread to connect the two 24" angle iron pieces at the fire brick end. I move mine a fair amount, and occasionally found the pieces could slide around a little with that end unsecured. Have to add, this is, in fact, as simple as it sounds to make. Great design, and using my local metal supplier, was able to build (with burner) for $140.

There are many videos on how to make a basic coal forge, but this is the best I see for a cheap starter gas forge. I just sent this video to my cousin and we are about to build a new workshop for my backyard as life has me staying in this house a few more years than I was expecting. This will be a great addition and I am done waiting on the right time to start blacksmithing. I started in metal trades as a teenager before moving to other types of construction. There is nothing better than forging metal and seeing that glowing weld. Now its back to basics for me and picking up where I left off 25 years ago. Thank you so much for this video and parts list.

This video is inspiring. I was just going to make a foundry but been watching a lot of forge related videos and now want to build a furnace that I can use for both a forge and a foundry. This gives me a lot of good ideas as I lack both a quality welder and the skill to make something decent with the freebie HF one I have. One plus is I already have an anvil, name is too worn to identify but it is old and was my grandpas.

You're a brilliant teacher. I'm a beginner jeweler/metalsmith. blacksmithing is a little over the top for me now. I've tried it a little bit. Very fascinating for sure.

Thank you for posting this (and of course all your other videos). I've thoroughly enjoyed all your videos and other than waiting to move onto some land for a real workshop, I look forward to building a forge like this to start out. Cheers!

That's a great little forge. I read an article in a country living magazine many. years ago (while waiting in the dental surgery) looking something very similar to your design and thought I should make one. Unfortunately on that occasion I was called in quickly and never got to finish reading the article. I am a woodworker and general tool tinkerer but occasionally have the need to do some metal working or heat treatments. I guess it could be left under a lean to roof to lessen the risk of woodshop fires. Many thanks, I think I'll build this little gem. Perfect.

Very nice forge. I do a little iron work myself now using my torch or wood stove as a heat source, but I think I may have to build that. Thanks. Tim

Great video sir. Thank you. Would live to see you do a burner build. I've built a couple over the years but, the ones I've made typically function less efficiently than the ones I've bought.
