I can’t stop smiling over how cute Reese is and when she said “Bob’s your Uncle”, I about died laughing. Congrats on loosing the training wheels. Huge accomplishment!!! Thank you Graeme for not falling off the roof. I held my breath the entire time you were up there. I installed a metal roof two years ago at age 71. I was scared to death. No more roofs for me, my balance isn’t what it used to be. Your cabin is coming together and it’s looking great. I don’t remember seeing snow up there. Is that normal?

Nail to the kneecaps… nah I’m good….😂 Woodness Goodness Cuteness Overloadness ❤ What a great memory to have with your daughter! 😊 Those metal roofs are seriously slippery. Bare foot does help, but the safety Karen’s will not be happy. Dead battery had us screaming NO! That roof (after pollen or dust) is going to be worse than an old school dusty basketball court with Payless kicks….. Stay safe! 💪🏼 🌲

Looking great man! If I were you I’d check in with a local structural engineer for an opinion on that bracing. I bet they wouldn’t charge you much at all if you gave them photos marked up with member sizing and stuff. The bracing may be more effective if it’s actually attached to the inside of the footing post and run up to face of joist, for example (also the attachment method matters). I’ve consulted with engineers in this manner for small projects and only paid like $300. Worth it if you are still wondering about it! Keep building man! Oh and congrats on getting the kid riding on 2 wheels! My daughter just got there too - so fun!

I just installed a similar 12/12 roof on a cabin last year. Here's a tip. Try building a platform/scaffold screwed into the side of the cabin and attached with stilts that reach the ground on the outside. What's great about this is that you can take your ladder up there and anchor it to the platform while laying the ladder directly on the roof. You'll use it not only to install the roof but also the trim and ridge cap. It made things so much easier. Love your build. Coming along very nice. Cheers!

The roof looks fantastic! I've done one metal roof and was told the fasteners were to go through the ribs. Any thoughts flats vs ribs?

Yea honestly not sure! The install instructions and supplier said to do flat beside rips. Not sure why but I’ve seen it done this way here a lot.

I like the color. They make rock climbing shoes that are very sticky. You would make me feel better if you got a pair of them. If there's a backpacking and climbing store in your area, please stop by. They will make an immense difference on that roof. You need to buy a rat terrier and a white rat. A rat terrier after being bitten by a rat will become a rat killing machine. They will kill every rat on your side of the mountain. That's a good thing. Take care my friend. Vaughn

It’s about 48! But because of the hills it feels like a 100 when your hiking through it.

What prevents the fasteners from becoming water ingress points? Is there some kind of o-ring-like material under the screw head, or do we just not care about a bit of water getting into the strapping?

Yes there’s a metal washer that compresses a rubber gasket against the metal. When properly installed, it has a 50 year lifespan. Very popular around here…

Get some of those Neogen fish flavored green pellets for rats. Congratulations to your daughter learning to ride with no training wheels.
