This idea is literally over 100-years old.
Fun facts: the monowheel was invented in the mid-1800s and its first patents submitted in 1869 (by 4 separate people!). Early designs included a tandem version and even a horse-drawn one. Its current world speed record is 72.9 mph, set by a team at Duke University - comprised of a few Tesla and SpaceX engineers +others - in 2020.
@danielwhyatt3278

Oh that one made by Duke University sounds really awesome. Do they have a link to that way they shared how they made it and it in action? That’s really what should be built on mass right now. They could seriously make a lot of money off that.

So awesome! I actually found this while trying to figure out how to get a tire for building a monowheel myself. I’m thinking this design could lend itself to an extremely efficient electric vehicle… huge diameter tire=low rolling resistance against road, also, the gyroscopic effect when accelerating/decelerating makes you need to gently accel/decel which is perfect for efficiency and battery regeneration… let me know what you think of my concept

This is what I wanted to see when I looked up a monowheel video! Great job
I'd like to see an updated version of this- breaks (and parking break), proper stand, better steering method, and a little better weight distribution. I was impressed with this, but personally felt like it fell short after all the work that went into it. Seeing the foot on floor breaking and turning, I can't imagine that any kind of slope would be a viable risk in case the momentum of the vehicle just carried it forward while your leg was like that. I quite like the idea of this kind of thing, the monowheel, makes me think of General Grievous vehicle in Star Wars, but a lot of the actual makes of it miss out (what I would personally consider) important features.

When I was a kid in the early 1950's , my dad and I were watching a program on TV about these "Bikes" ....He told me they were around when HE was a kid in the late 1920's ....so now , 65 years later , sure enough , I looked it up on YT and there are several videos from the 20's about these crazy bikes....the coolest one can go off road and the tire is about a foot wide and 7 feet tall!
LOVE your editing, we got the basic idea without a lot of mind numbing detail. We don't have to listen to some guy ramble on who's in love with his project and is overly enthusiastic about explaining every step in the process. Love the bike, super cool, love the outro.

At 3:50 that's a joke :D you can slow down the driving axel but the friction is too small to slow down the driven wheel ;) Practically there's NO BRAKE on that vehicle - only the driver's bare feet :D

I also want to see someone hit the brakes on it in such a way that when it stops, the person inside it rolls along with it too and it doesn't really stop. Essentially, I want to see the rider do a front flip inside of it.
@calebarena

Its called gerbiling, and if apply almost any amount of brakes you run the risk of doing it. Also, with a powerful enough motor, suddenly ripping the throttle could have the same effect only doing a back flip instead.
@mcr0741

@@calebarena yeah right, are you sure it's called gerbiling tho? I typed it up and the follow up suggestion was from south park, so naturally, I couldn't resist watching that one first. I didn't quite like what I saw. I also don't think it relates to the front flip thing I was talking about even remotely. But then again, the joke's on me. Why would a "front flip" in any scenario ever be called "gerbiling"?! 🤷🏻♂️
@mcr0741

@@calebarena oh yeah the "it" from south park. That was interesting. The gerbiling from south park. Not so much. They inserted a tube into someones anus and let a gerbil down that tube. The gerbil tried to escape, but pushed the tube out instead, getting stuck inside of the anus. So "gerbiling" from south park wasn't exactly fun. The toy wheel thing makes total sense though 👍🏻

You could have something akin to a training wheel on the front and back to keep the main seat area from doing that though it would sacrifice on looks

@@Casey-dy2oo I guess you'd just have to avoid doing that then. If you have to stop very quickly, you'd go about it much the same way you would on a motorcycle. They'd basically have to drift sidways at an angled slant as not to flip over their handlebars. You'd likely do something similar on this vehicle.

The idea was considered before, it's not new. It got dispatched for two reasons: 1. Steering and turning compensations. 2. Visibility comfort. One wheeled vehicles requires a lot of balancing in many ways.
