Building A Modern Industrial TV Stand
Metalworking and welding is something I am super passionate about. I find it to be extremely fulfilling, beautiful in how it looks, and its also much faster than traditional woodworking for furniture. So when my good buddy Ramy, asked me for some advice for his obnoxiously large TV he recently build, I knew I was going to be thinking something metal. He couldnt find anything online so I gave in and made him this one.

This build features not only some hilarious comedy...... IMO. But it also is packed with metalworking tips and ideas that I use all the time and will be teaching at my course at this years SPRING MAKE. IF you're looking to attend an awesome maker show, with hands on experience, check out SPRING MAKE APRIL 23-25 2019 in Cleveland OH. Use code MADEFORPROFIT to save $200.

Maybe it’s just me, yet. Making cool stuff is one thing. Making cool stuff for a friend is a greater achievement. You can see that in John’s face. Well done. Really enjoy your thinking thru the mess ups.
DC (Direct Current) is why the welds are being affected. AC isn’t affected by the magnet or magnetized material. Awesome build!
Ihr Amerikaner baut viel bessere DIY Möbel als wir Deutschen 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I remember the first time my friends and I saw a mentor on our robotics team use one of those toothed metal chopsaw blades. We never heard of the technology before, and we hid behind a workbench thinking he was about to use a wood blade to cut aluminum. We were amazed, it is truly cool technology, not having to have a lot of sparks when cutting steel.
Magnets totally affect the welding arc. Particularly noticeable with TIG but OK if you can get the magnet more than a few inches away. The welding arc is an electric current and and so is deflected by magnetic fields. Nice project by the way.
Dang! That is beautiful!!
John, as a certified welding inspector I can say 1000% that magnets 🧲 mess up a weld. It basically pulls the plasma to one side or the other, thats why degaussing magnetized pipe is such a big deal on pipelines where we want the boom stuff to stay where we want it.
As a Sheet Metal Worker, I've always felt like I can't use my trade to any practical use around my home. Now I've found one, thanks for the inspiration :p
The posing comment at the end was priceless. Very cool build and entertaining video.
This came together beautifully!! I love the paint color. Looks like it has a hint of blue
Well John, you did a awsome job here! So cool!
I never mix magnets and welding. Mostly because I don’t weld.
Awesome Build John! I like the Industrial Look!!! It just yells "Strong and Mighty"!!!
Hi John. I really like your stand. I'm an welding Instructor with the Salt Lake Community college. The question was Does the magnets effect the welds? The answer is yes in the flow of the electricity for the arc. It gets distorted, but not to the point of the weld fusing to the base material or the joint your welding. you may see discontinuity of the weld face or undercut an an example. Now Electricity will flow to the point of least resistance, when you add a magnet in the joint closest to the weld point and the electricity get redirected slightly that's when it may effect the weld itself, but using magnets to tack the joint together the welds themselves are not effected because when the liquid metal solidifies, its doesn't hurt the grain structure because the magnets are just not that strong to effect it to much. I hope this helps understanding how welds work and to answer the question.
Awesome build John! I really like how you show the problem solving. - Jim
Will be my first project when I get setup.. Thx. Love it. Need something to keep me buys..new hobby. Thx.
Awesome!
That looks absolutely insanely awesome!! Love it! Great way to incorporate metal into the home
Muito bom, parabéns.
That's a sweet build. Really suits the style of apartment. Awesome work As Per.
