Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 64 | Winter is here! Building a seating nook with a pull-out guest bed
Winter is here; first snow of the year! In this episode, we build a seating nook in the corner of the cabin. One side has a seat that tilts up for storage, while the other side pulls out to act as a guest sleeping area. We also finish up the trim, both interior and exterior, around the front door. Lastly, we build a makeshift bridge over the stream near our cabin to more safely collect water from it during the winter. We had to empty our rainwater barrels to prevent them from freezing.
Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

I follow a lot of off grid style living, and even people I watch who heated and lighted thier chicken coop, they have a battery room for thier solar to run the lights, and they vented the battery box they made because of toxic fumes the batteries release when they are charging, Simple Living Alaska, be carefull with indoor battery storage. I am getting nervous with snow and ice on your steps, and no handrail, all the best guys, love following along, be safe.

Depends of the type of battery
Hello Nick you need to put on some hand rails on your stairs so that you don’t end up breaking your necks when the stairs get icy.!☝️😊 Just thought I would mention that.😉 Take care of you guys. God bless, and I am really enjoying watching your videos. Take care.
Wow just look at you chopping that wood Maela. I remember watching you when you were first learning to hold and swing an axe. You’ve come a long way dear. I just admire your pioneering spirit so much! You should be so proud of yourselves. Nana Ottawa fan 👵🐶🥰
Chain saw mill would Be very handy for you . I know you have very few power tools but would save you money to mill your own lumber.
I just spent 5 days in the hospital with a very bad tear duct infection. Luckily, I found these videos to keep me entertained while I recovered. Thank you Nik & Maela!

google Ram Pump, it pushes water up hill also! FACTS!
Maybe consider having your firewood chopping block closer to your wood shed, it will save you from loading and unloading that sled so often. Keep the videos coming!
Wow with that stream you could generate your own power. 😅
I would recommend nailing some boards onto them three logs so they don’t have any chance to separate while you’re walking on them. That would be a cold splash in the winter time.
You two are awsome. No battery drills or screw guns. You guys are true pioneers.
Don't know what you have for a stove but try to make bigger pieces to help burn all night . What i call all nighters. . Keepthe videos coming .
You might want to perhaps, consider using a good wood glue for your joints. It would make everything much stronger.

Absolutely, use glue for EVERY joint.
You make a great team. There is I'll do my thing and you do your thing or tjere is you both doing our thing together. I love seeing that.
You two can do absolutely anything !! And you’re the best at what you do Phenomenal work
Suggestion: Tin roofing or wood siding with Chicken Steel mesh attached to it as Skirting all the side of the cabin would be ideal in winter since it protects your cabin from cold drafts and snow but also protects the cabin for critter infestiation.
Great episode guys. I'm beginning to think there is nothing the two of you can't accomplish.
THAT TIME OF THE YEAR HERE TOO. ONLY WE DON'T GET SNOW TILL JANUARY. KEEP PUSHIN' ON FOLKS... PEACE FROM CREEL CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO... PS HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ADVOKO MAKES??? HE DOES IT ALL LIKE YOU, BUT USES A CHAINSAW FOR MILLIN' HIS OWN LUMBER... YOU GOT TO CHECK HIM OUT...
Those red plaid work boots are pretty impressive!
Farklı farklı bölümleri bir arada izliyorum.Dizi film izlemiş gibi bağımlılık yapacaksınız gibi))
HI, my friends I do enjoy watching you guys build this if me and my husband were younger we would be doing the same thing keep up the amazing job guys till next time.
Maëla your debark skills are off the charts..Gods' Best to You Both🙏🕉

The passion, ingenuity and happiness that you always show in your episodes is amazing and inspiring!!!
Just love seeing those batteries under the bench. You have it all now. Heat, water, and power. Should make for a comfortable winter.
Hello you two, I was happy to see something from you again. Maäla is now swinging the ax properly. Your interior design will become more and more comfortable, great! Winter is already clearly noticeable here. We are already freezing at 10°C. Have a good time until next time. Manuel from Karlsruhe (Germany)
Great place for a small waterwheel!
Amo sus videos felicitaciones ❤❤❤❤❤
Very nice, During Nov and Dec I cut all my firewood for next year, before the snow is too deep, stack it under cover in a place where it gets sun and wind, no water on it. It is nice to stay warm cutting wood.
My husband and I are thoroughly enjoying your videos. Great job!!

Thanks for sharing - love the pull out bed
Just a suggestion, I think adding a medium size ax/hatchet to your tool repertoire would make life a little easier without loosing your manual tool edge…stay safe…
I would like to thank the two of you for allowing us to come along on this most entertaining adventure in log cabin building. The way that the two of you share every aspect of the construction process is wonderful. As an eighty-one-year-old lifelong DIYer, I am very impressed with how you work out solutions to all of the problems that come along with a project like this cabin. Please keep posting your progress as I find it relaxing entertainment watching your progress.
Nick, your lady is amazing too, lucky man you are. She was a perfect fit for you, as you built this awesome house together. You are both blessed as you both enjoy it wholeheartedly.
When chopping wood go to a tire dealer and see if they have a throw away trailer tire, stack your wood inside and chop away. Your wood should stay in place and not fly everywhere.
Wonderfully made video. 👏👏👏👏👏
I always love watching you two. That slide out bed was a great idea. ❤❤
Its always so relaxing watching you both create, the pull-out bed was so simple and so effective👍Winter is going to look incredible I'm sure and no doubt will bring some challenges but you will handle it and continue to thrive, another very enjoyable video guys☺
Watching your videos is like therapy for me…… everything looks so peaceful and such serenity !! ☺️😊✌🏼😎
It’s great to see you both again. I love all your videos!
Build a Ram Pump, it's easy to diy. It lifts the water 10 meters without power
Outstanding Craftsman ship 👍!!
Your new nook area is very nice. I always try to figure out what your current project is, but I never seem to figure it out. Nice job you two.
It's almost ice skating on the lake again. Love the idea of a seating nook and extra bed. Such good work from you too. Glad you made that bridge too , to be able to get the water easier. Take care and see you next time.
Me and my grandma love watching your vidios and my grandma says you should get a Berkey!
You guys do such good wood working projects - very good results and beautiful pretty maela is awesome
Looking at your wall of firewood, all I could think was “that’ll make a very difficult puzzle”…. Yes, I’m that dull. Great vid both. You’re living the BEST of lives. 👍🏻
I just watched Bushradical's latest KZread video released on 13 Nov. He builds a hinged ladder for a small cabin loft. The ladder section of the video starts at the 18:30 mark. If you ever decide to build a new ladder this looks easy and functional in a small space. Looking forward to next week's video.
Awesome craftsmanship on the guest bed! Oh and everything else you both do. I’m intrigued as much as I was from the very beginning of your cabin build! Very good I’m proud of you both!!!
enjoy your winter life in your lovely cabin
Que bien chicos.😘😘😘
Cool keep up the good work!!!
Thanks.
Luv what you two have done, I couldn’t do it without power tools so hats off to you. Have you thought of security at all. Being out in the wilderness can be without it is kind of risky. Please consider something, even a smaller system is better than none at all. Take care
Give us an overall tour of your log cabin.
Found your videos, and great content. Advice; stopping choking up the hammer. use it as intended, by the whole handle
Watching from Malaysia ❤❤
Genius!
Why is the seat over the battery storage slanted, and why can't you use the water you collected anymore? Just courteous. We enjoy watching.

Adirondack chairs are so comfortable. They're nice for different heights, and they're slanted even more. It's way better than flat on the butt. I don't know about the water.
Bom dia paz de Cristo
The more cross cut the easier you can make those notches
Do you guys think you will ever have a road that goes to your cabin? Or do you prefer to walk the trail?
Hola Nick hola Maela!!! Reitero abrazo grande!!
Use a short pvc pipe for a handle on your sled 😀
I think one heavy rain would sweep the water collection bridge away. (Maybe the stream is not so volatile though.) Looking forward to cozy winter content!
You should build a ram pump
Essas árvores são maravilhosas 😍.
What a cool place--and nice work--Wow!
A gas pump will come handy to collect water from the creek
The batteries are lead acid which produce Hydrogen gas. Ventilation is a must. Sealed ones no ventilation necessary. What I don't understand you split your wood then haul it to your wood shed. Cut and split the wood right there. Work smarter Not harder. I do enjoy your Bit&Brace. Does yours have a ratchet system ad thst smaller on you used for the shelves & draws you built. Great build do far.
You two are awesome!
Brasil 🇧🇷
Awesome build, NC USA 🇺🇸
ciao ciao💪💪👍👍👋👋
Where did you learn how to build your log home. I enjoy watching your videos. I’m a 79 year woman but if I had it to do over I’d be a bit more adventurous.
winter firewood 🌲🌲🏕🔥 is key 🔑 JUST hibernate like 2 bears🐻🐻 and you 2 will be fine. great video. thanks for sharing from the library too.📚🖥🎥☃❄💪👀😎😇❤
Why don’t you insulate the water tanks so the water doesn’t freeze. Also why don’t you make a hydro turbine to harness electricity from the river. It looks ideal to do so. Love the video 👍👍
You do beautiful work. I’m concerned about the batteries being in the same room for sleeping guests. Batteries give off silent toxic fumes that are not good for health. Do take care & be safe. 👍👍😊
Wating for new video❤😂
If you look at your saw your saw is both a 90° and a 45° so you don’t need always your speed square
23:45 RIP earphone users
Hello! Your video is very good, you are a hard-working, hard-working person and I like the scenery here, it's so beautiful. Wishing you good health and peace. New subscriber❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow! That’s a slick looking guest bed/ bench, nice job! How’s the little chainsaw working out?

Did you know that you can use your hand saw instead of your speed square? At about 9:30 in this video we see the Mrs. marking a board with a speed square, while the Mr. is standing next to her with a saw that I believe has a handle that was specifically designed for you to be able to mark 90 and 45 degree angles. Check it out and see if it works. The handle edge, with the two screws, has a surface that is 90 degrees perpendicular to the non-cutting edge of the saw. And the edge with the single screw is 45 degrees to the non-cutting edge. As long as the edge of your board is "clean" the saw will give you a much longer marking opportunity than your small speed square.
❤❤❤
