Building A House With Pallets OFF-GRID!
One of the most cost and energy efficient natural building methods is using reclaimed wooden pallets, straw for insulation, and finishing with a clay plaster. In this tour Autumn shows us some of her beautiful projects (a cob oven and the honeycomb home) in the San Diego area and explains why we should all consider building our homes with natural materials!

Thanks Autumn for showing us the way everything is created. Works of art. Living my dream. Good on you for recycling all these beautiful materials, makes it all the more stunning. ❤
I am glad to see the influence of cob across America! Recently, the feds approved the international building standards for Cobb as an approved exterior and interior finish. My family is currently finishing a watershed to cover our well which will be in Cobb made from our retention tank that is filled with 60/40 sand clay. Thanks for the reassurance of the use of straw on the walls for insulation in pallet walls. I am using up some old fiberglass insulation that we found in the garbage around the corner on my ceiling panels, the owners were glad to get rid of it, and it didn't end up in the landfill. We regularly salvage from the trash routes, as there is a large amount of resources that we can glean to build with. I've been wrestling with the idea of using tires for the Cocina and wasn't quite sure of how to approach the ovens. We're going to improve upon yer design, with glass and sand before installing the cooking tiles and the oven itself. Our Cocina is like that of the Reid-Baldwin Ranchero, on the L.A. Arboretum grounds. Outside with a place for a Corval or Discas to cook on. I don't know about the sod roof here in east Texas, I'd have to mow it once a week in the summer or it would be a fire hazard from the grass.
Thank you autumn for sharing this. I am researching eco friendly low cost house builds and you have convinced me cob is amazing!
i love the ethos and hope to mimic the resourcing of the materials as far as possible although it may be harder to source the non-pallet timber in the same way here in the UK. i'm at the very start of the process, do you have other videos showing more detail of the build? do you mind if i pick your brains along the way? i intend to start with a structure of similar proportions to the honeycomb home but hope to build larger communal structures in the future, any idea what the limits on size of the structure are using these techniques? i guess anglo-saxon long-houses were built in a similar way and they were immense, what do you think?
The spiral design of the roof is lovely.
The one problem with cob is that things will burrow into it, especially rodents and certain wasps and bees. In humid climates, you need a large overhanging roof to protect the cob from frequent and heavy rain, and a solid foundation of rock and mortar or cement is advisable where precipitation frequently leaves water on top of the ground. I really DO like the idea of cob, and might I add that the traditional lime whitewash helps to keep microbes down as well as brightens up the interior. FYI, what is the best flooring for a humid region? Stone tile, maybe pebbles and smaller stones arranged in patterns and sealed? Wood plank? Plus, how could this work for a home set into a hillside or earth bermed on 2 or 3 sides? Maybe set into a stone bluff? Our farm has a deep hollow were I want to build, and I haven't decided whether to dig into the hillside or widen and deepen an overhang in a bluff halfway up the hillside. Oh and clay can be mixed with various natural pigments to make a wash for the walls. A friend of mine in NM uses colored clays for the interior walls of her family's 275 yr old hacienda, and they work very well. White absolutely brightens interiors up, but you can also mix a bit of color in for something different. Painting designs on those walls sounds fun, too.
I wish I could stay there looks like my kind of life
This is gorgeous Autumn! I love the organic way the window niches and bookshelves look as if they grew there, its beautiful. I think I'm going to try doing a building like this in the summer when I go back to Scotland, I mean, you are as well giving this method a try, even if you mess up the first attempt it will always be another small building you can use as a bathroom or whatever. I don't imagine mine will turn out as beautiful as yours but you have to start somewhere. Thanks for this video.
Great video. I love the sacred geometry elements of this build!

The clay detailing under the nook & window at 4:03 is just beautiful!!!
Any issues with termites with the pallets? I am not sure what wood they typically use for those!
you have a very beautiful presence! also this house is gorgeous and i love the little truth window :)
oh wow! the spiral pattern on the ceiling was such an amazing discovery while watching this video. using a door as a window was also brilliant. I love what's been done here and I thank you sharing.
I really like this design. Do you have any blue prints for the measurements of the walls and ceiling and joists?
I've got to make a pizza oven after seeing this! Thank you for sharing.
Great work on many levels! I’d love to attend a building workshop some day so will keep my eyes open for opportunities.

Where I live we have a high clay content in the soil. Would it be good for your earth home?
Wait. I'm 40 seconds in. Wood is going to the landfill? What is *wrong* with people?!?!

If Scrap wood was being offered and available for pick up to people that want build with it before it goes to the land fill. It would be fantastic if construction companies and contractors offered their scrap to their local communities through FB marketplace before disgarding their scraps. One mans trash is another's treasure 😃

Fantastic way to create living spaces and use reclaimed materials in a very smart way ! This is the way to go and being nature friendly ! Municipalities should allow this types of buildings to be built. We are living in a very wasteful and disposable society. It is time to change and go back to earth friendly roots !

Autumn Flower...great presentation. I'm sold! Integrating the pallets in with the cob is new to me. Ingenious up-use! And hexagons rule!! I love every aspect of The Honeycomb Home. Truly, as you pointed out, so open to artistic interpretation... Your spiral rafters...(swoon)! So appealing to me, as an elder artist. Kudos...!
This is fantastic. I’ve been trying to figure out how to balance insulation, thermal mass, and reasonable build process. Thank you so much!!!

You don’t want most natural building materials to be exposed to water over an extended period of time. But generally a quick spill or mop isn’t an issue. The floors can also be sealed with various natural finishes such as linseed oil.
Hey Autumn, did you break up the straw to smaller size before mixing it with sand and clay ? Also, what ratio of sand to clay did you use?
That side windows is a claver idea and looks so beautiful ❤
Beautiful video! Super well done Autumnflower! Glad to be of help and learn from you!
I love the designs you sculpted into the cobb!!!!!!! Also love all the other little details you did to give it that artistic touch. And the living roof! Also like how you decorated the inside. I’m curious about the benefits/disadvantages of this vs the mud bag design
this is exactly the kinda video i love! thank you Autumn~ I really wanna make a little backyard cob he-shed. ^.^

Ques - is there some place in the US that allows this? How can I find out where? Does it have to be somewhere with no building codes?
@LullabyeLaura

It depends on your state and even your city! Where I'm located in Ohio we couldn't do an actual living space, but if we keep it under certain dimensions then we can build a cute "shed" of sorts in our backyard.

WoW….. Thank you for the of learning about knew building materials and patterns ….
Absolutely beautiful Lil cob building!
Nice structure. I would loved to have seen something other than OSB roof sheathing because of the look and the glue smell. Maybe pallet wood, would work?

I thought cob traditionally used animal manure, typically cow dung. I don't know what this adds to the mix, but I think it makes a better binder. Do some research on this, because I think this was used extensively in England and Europe in the middle ages.

I wish I could build my own house cheaply and naturally. It's the pesky building codes and red tape that stops me. Mentally and financially could not deal with in Los Angeles County.
