I created a design of the table in Sketchup & joined two boards with dowels to get my width. I then cut out my table from this front piece and attached it with a piano hinge. I cut out various notches from the top of the front piece to get it fitting against the van ceiling & wall, and to incorporate a shelf.
With the van wall being a very uneven surface, I created templates with two bits of cardboard & trimmed them down to get a good fit, then drew up these templates onto the wood & cut them out. I then cut out an opening for the face of my battery pack to sit in, using a router.
Clamping the side pieces in place, I used pocket holes to screws the sides into the front piece to created an arched structure.
The next piece to cut was the top shelf, once again with a couple of notches removed, so that it would fit nicely in the van. Once cut and sanded, I added pocket holes & screwed it into the unit, making the bottom of the shelf was flush with the top of the table opening.
This shelf would have the addition of a back piece & this is would allow an area for the table to be attached to the van wall. Due to the corners of the van, the back piece didn’t stretch all the way along, but as long as it met the screw threads in the van walls then this didn’t matter.
I created the base in the same way as the top shelf & with a bit of refinement got it to a good fit. I cut a recess for my piano hinge to sit in and this is so when the table is folded up it sits flush with the rest of the front. With the structure of the table finally coming together, I could attach the hinge into the front recess.
I needed to fix the lower area of the unit to the van wall & so another brace was needed. This time, it required an angled edge to accommodate the corner of the van.
I undid the pocket holes, and got some wood glue in the joints and then, after screwing it all back together, got some 9mm diameter dowel plugs that I had pre-cut, to fill the pocket holes in places where they might be seen, like the top shelf, inside the side the unit and on the base.
I could now attach the table to the hinge. It was a good fit overall, though the corners were a little tight, so I sanded the edges. I then attached 2 magnets, a latch & 4 eye plates for my wires to hook through. Before deciding on this method of holding the table up I looked at nearly every possible way of supporting a table, including folding shelf brackets, fold-out arms & piston stays. Though it would have been nice not to have these wires, I’ve never found them to be ‘in the way’ and if I’m going to be cooking on this table, then I want the strongest possible support for it. After a final sand, I gave the whole unit 3 coats of polyurethane varnish to protect the wood, and sanded in between coats.
At long last I was ready to install the table in the van. For this I used all 5 of the M6 screw threads built into the wall of the van, and purchased some high tensile bolts that would secure it in place, along with penny washers to help distribute the load and protect the wood. I could now add the battery - it’s great to finally have power built into the van!

DISCLAIMER: In this video, I am in no way stating that this is the proper way to undertake the conversion of a van, however after research and experience using the van, I believe this to be the way that is best suited to my van and the way I intend to use it.

    Like a gift from the universe, KZread recommended your channel. Thank you for the content. It's given me the support I've needed. Just finished insulating and plying my Vauxhall Vivaro swb high top. Made the unit for the fridge and wood burner. Walnut veneer ordered. Next job is designing the sofa bed.

    This is really helpful, thanks and great channel. I had quite literally finished my bed build, very similar to yours but just double. I was thinking about how to make a pull down table and here it is 🤙🏻I'm also a surfer but the board lives above me at night time. By the way, I've only had my van about 5 weeks and found out I had to change my insurance when I added the bed to a motorcaravan. Glad I checked.

    Someone is getting proficient on the tools ? Super job, i think you will start using the router for more and more tasks once you gather many cutters, i.e cutting the table out and sinking the hinge, the space between new shelf and back doors is bigger than you think it will be perfect for a spice rack shelf or 2 with 3mm bungee cord strung a few times on the front you could even screw jar lids to the bottom for hanging jars. I went out early this morning for a couple of hours with the dog and cooked breakfast and coffee once back to the NV. Ed

    I've watched all your videos, and have been really digging into the design of my NV200 camper build. I have a plan mocked up in CAD and sketchup. I'm so impressed with the cabinet design. The part that intimidates me the most is building cabinets to fit the shape of the van. Would you be willing to share or sell your sketchup file of the cabinet? Thanks for considering!

  • @LensOfJames

    @LensOfJames

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Emily, thanks! My SketchUp design was mainly for the dimensions of the cabinet and the side parts which fit the shape of the van were more of an estimation. The fit of the cabinet in my van is by no means perfect, but making a cardboard template was definitely the way to go!

    Hi thanks for putting in the time to make these videos. I wanted to know if there's anyway of putting 3 metre bundles of copper pipe flat into this can without having to put them onto the dashboard itself. My colleague has a bulkhead in his but would be willing to cut it. The Pipe tube was stolen off the top of his van along with about £200 worth of pipe. Thanks

  • @LensOfJames

    Hi Ray, thanks and sorry to hear about the theft. I've got a dimensions video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dX6ZmtKgca7dqNo.html. I'm not sure you'll get 3 metres inside the van without it going on the dash. My surfboard is 9'5" and there's only about an inch to spare, though it's a lot bulkier than pipe so you may be able to find a few extra inches by moving them around. Sorry I can't be more definitive with an answer, but hope it helps!

    Wasted time/effort/material on the table when a single piece of birch plywood cut to size does the job.

  • @LensOfJames

    @LensOfJames

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not really, because a sheet of ply is difficult to transport in a small van, the pineboard can be bought in a number of sizes that suits your project (meaning less cuts to make and less wastage), is lighter than quality plywood (important for a van build), is easy to source for me (unlike quality ply). I've done a 'single piece of ply table' (see my earlier video) and it looked basic. I'm very pleased with my new table build - no regrets with this upgrade!
