Building a Donkey Dugout & Day Shelter Run-In for our Miniature Donkeys Dry Paddock - JD 1025r helps

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As you saw in one of our previous videos, we are expanding the Horse Dry Paddock for our two Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys. We are using Stone Dust (aka Stone Fines; Crusher Sand; Manufactured Sand) as the base, which creates a very dry, hard packed paddock that is excellent for hoof health and hoof care. Your Farrier will love you for it.
While doing so we decided to build them a "Donkey Dugout & Day Shelter" for their new paddock. This is nothing more than a covered 8' x 8' "Run-In" structure having a shed roof and being open on 3 sides. It has a feeding station wall where we will hang a water bucket and slow feeding hay net. In addition to their stable, this will give the donkeys a "Refreshment Stand" where they can hang out during the day while providing shelter from the sun, rain or snow. The Run-In will have rubber stable mats to comfort their hooves while creating a clean eating space with no concern of ingesting sand (when they nibble up the hay that falls on the ground) We do this knowing that you should not ground feed on a sand based dry paddock due to the concern for sand colic in horses and donkeys.
So come along and watch the fun of building this little Donkey Dugout for our miniature friends. Special thanks to our little John Deere 1025r Compact Tractor and Backhoe - When done we will have moved 20 tons (15 cubic yards) of Stone Dust with the front loader - 1/3 of a yard at a time . We couldn't have done this with him.

Crusher sand great idea instead of concrete for a run in, can we do this with a small barn for the winter as well? Thanks great tips. Does it matter which directions you are running the opening of the run in/barn? I am looking at an open 3 acres, probably will plant some trees to block some of the wind/snow/hot sun...

Hi - Thanks for watching our videos. I'm no expert but I would think that crusher sand could be a good base for your Run-In. It compacts really hard as long as you don't use it too thick. I'd say no more than 6 inches deep (if your location is on a slope you should level & compact the ground first before using the sand) - Any liquids will permeate through the sand and you can place rubber stall mats directly on it as we did in our Donkey Daytime Dugout. And if the sand gets really soiled over time you can dig it out and replace it The opening direction of your 3-sided Run-In depends upon a few factors. Where you live. (really cold windy winters? really hot rainy summers?) The topography (normal wind directions of your site will play a big part) Some say it should face South or Southeast. South faces away from cold winter winds / Southeast does the same but also faces away from the prevailing summer rain events coming from the Southwest & the hot summer sun. Any trees you plant in their space will need to have hardware cloth wrapped around the trunks and the foliage needs to be above their reach. As you know they love to munch on any type of tree. I would recommend conifers (White Pine, Virginia Pine, etc.) They provide shade, wind block and the needles & pine cones they drop can be eaten by your Donks (good source of vitamin c) Definitely not oaks or red maples (acorns are poisonous & the leaves contain Tannin too) - I suggest you research what trees and shrubs in your area are bad for equines. Hi there - I have seen the paver base sands they sell in bags at the big box stores, and several look very similar to our Manufactured Sand - I would think the closest thing to that would be what is called "M10 Sand" which is available from Aggregate Companies (Sand & Gravel Companies) so you wouldn't have the expense of buying it by the bag at retail... The M10 sand is more of a limestone material whereas the Manufactured Sand is made of Granite - The Granite tends to drain the water and dry quicker than the M10 sand - (we've tried them both) - Best of Luck with your Dry Paddock Endeavor
