Building a DIY Pergola

In this video we are building a DIY backyard corner pergola! See more in the description for the full list of materials we used.
We had trouble finding a triangle shaped pergola that was big enough (and still within our budget) for the space we wanted, so we decided to build one ourselves from scratch. All of the materials we used were picked up from our local hardware store, and all of the wood was cut and stained from stock. We did not follow any specific plans, and cut everything to fit as we went.
Hardware:
Post Base - amzn.to/3nRTAUa
Deck Joist Tie - amzn.to/3nV3NiL
Angled Rafter Hanger (left) - amzn.to/3h7LPbe

3-1/2" Structural Screw - amzn.to/3vR1nEH
5-1/2" Structural Screw - amzn.to/3uqnVM6
Decorative Washers - amzn.to/3uD8alf
Rafter Clips - amzn.to/2SAACpL
Lumber (stock dimensions):

Beams - 2" x 8" x 16'
Rafters - 2" x 6" x 16' and 2" x 6" x 8'
Strapping - 1" x 2" x 8'

However impossible to find any decorative brackets of this standard in UK - extremely frustrating. Looks like my only choice is to order from US get bent over the table on shipping fees then a good old fisting from UK customs on import tax. Am sure it will be worth it though.

Can you tell me what size the pergola is and what the distance is between the center of the footings (distance between the cement bolts).

    For the two sides that run along the wall, the bolts are 10 feet from each other, which puts the long front side at a distance just a hair over 14 feet (170 inches).

    Great Idea - here in Yuma me and my wife have designed a three legged pergola, and "wha-la" your video is helpful similar to our sizes has well. Our idea is to put a lightweight swing chair inside, the purchased chair is a Wayfair product that will hold up to 600lbs. Do you think the 2 x 6 rafters or 2 x 8 beams will sustain the weight? Also the center cross beam i don't think you put the hardware for those. I'm assuming they are a left & right hand 2 x 8 joist hanger from Simpson strong tie or other? Instead of ordering or purchasing 2 I presume it would be 4 si or no?

    Great production of your process! Do you think that the 2 rafter straps on either end is enough to keep them from pushing over in a strong wind? I’m getting ready to start a similar process of pergola/deck. Thanks!

    I ended up adding a third clip to the longer rafters that attached to that extra support beam that went across the middle. The longest ones have three but the shorter ones still have only 2. We've been hit with several wind storms since completion, one got up to 75+mph gusts, and it's still holding up beautifully. Thanks!

    Nice work! Thanks for posting...I'm wanting to build a smaller pergola/arbor and needing to make some design decisions. Do the structural screws come from both sides on the footers? Do the screws line up so they hit each other if coming from both sides? I've been wondering how those Accent Line Simpson ties hold up.

  • @HouseholdHowTo

    @HouseholdHowTo

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! Yes, the screws for the footers do come in from both sides and the holes don't appear to be offset from each other. I did not run into any issues with them running into each other. My assumption is that because they are a smaller diameter than your typical lag or carriage bolt, they can deflect to the side if the tips do manage meet. All of the strong tie hardware has held up great at a little over a year out. We've had some monster wind storms (one reached 75+ mph) and so far the structure hasn't so much as flinched. I'll definitely use them again.

  • @HouseholdHowTo

    @HouseholdHowTo

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! We are a little over a year out from completion, and so far it looks just like the day it was built. I'm honestly a little surprised at how well the screen has held. So far it has gone through several storms with 50+ mph winds, two snows (one with 4-6 inches), a few minor hail storms, and one with category 1 hurricane winds. We essentially live on the side of a mountain where the wind is a serious problem, but so far so good! All said and done this cost a little under $800. Fortunately I was able to buy all of the material right before lumber prices went crazy, so it definitely would have been more expensive if I built it today. Very much looking forward to costs coming down soon!

    That's all dependent on your climate and soil type. Your local building guidelines should help with this. I'm not sure how it is done outside of the US, but here you can contact your city representatives or possibly the website. My base only had to extend around 45cm below ground, but yours may be different.
