If you want a deeper larger pond, good reason to proceed. Might consider adding a step down from the pilings to the walk way. If any of your family or friends visiting have any physical challenges you could ramp the transition vs step down to give access to all. Pond seems pretty happy at it's level...sometimes simple ideas like an extra foot of water opens up flood gates (no pun intended) :D not a homesteader, but enjoy all your family shares about your journey. God bless all of you as you transition one one home to the next....Jim
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your family accomplish your goals. You are all working hard together to make your lives enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
here is a thought. build a small coffer dam around the drain pipe. the water could rise and then flow over the dam to exit the existing pipe. you could also us a couple of 45 elbows to raise the pipes inlet. Nice to see you building again. Give Gina a great big hug. That lady is awesome! Right there beside you, and not afraid of working with tools.
Sorry Ali I saw that coming! I kinda knew the barrels would shift!🤣 made the same mistake myself... awesome on the dock build, will make fishing a lot more fun... 👍🙏💥🎉🎊 I was just looking, can you make a wooden spill gate for the pipe? The thought was, a gate you can slid up and down to control the level!

Don't mess with a pond that's working. Raising the water level in that pond may make it prone to flooding/flowing over the bank or spillway.
That dock will be a nice addition to the pond! Blessings to all.

One piece of advise on the equipment that has hydraulic cylinders. Try to leave the cylinder ram retracted as far as you can to keep them protected from the weather. Even though the rods are hard chromed, they can still rust and that will destroy the seals and cause hydraulic leaks which can be expensive to repair or replace.
@sonnyblack9905
3 жыл бұрын
yep totally agree on this i was a hydraulic repairman for 40+ years with the Government, changed many a set of seals due to the rams corroding. when you grease you unit put a light coat of grease on the cylinders this will help protect them.

2 barrels side by side will help with the stabilization, single barrel will always rock!
You may need to add another barrel to stabilize it a bit. Just Al on it and the 1 barrel nearly "disappears.". Just a suggestion.

What was Gina's reaction when she saw that you were swimming all by yourself the other day? I really like this new format where you only post every couple of days. It gives me time to rewatch your videos in between posts. I get to see things I missed from the first time that I watched it. I had up to 60 subscriptions and I whittled them down to about 5 and Lumnah Acres is one of those 5. You guys are GREAT vloggers!!!!! Mahalo from Hawaii!!! Aloooooha!!!!
JudithB Well, never built a dock, but I think 2 barrels on the end, or 3 barrels as wings was a good idea! I would add a swimming ladder on the end too. Boat cleats for the kayaks too. I would be fencing pastures, getting pipe corners cemented in, and road built to house site instead of toys.

Al I’m convinced you can do almost everything. I never would have thought of a floating dock. Really nice👍🏻💕🌻🙏🏻 You’ll figure it out👍🏻🌻 Share some of your rain with us in CA🤗
Good morning Lumnah Acres family and friends.
I believe you said you were planning on attaching a dock, when you do the buoyancy of the dock will raise the end of your walkway and reduce the bounce. I recommend finishing the dock before you consider raising the pond level.
Nice project guys. You two are always one or two steps ahead of us. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I Love It!!! What a Gorgeous Pond!!! What a Blessing!! God Bless and have a Wonderful Day!! 😀❤⚘
Nice to see you building again Al. I love the sound of the birds at you guy's OGP. Thanks for showing this. It was fun to watch.
We had a floating dock at our lake property. It was about 30’ long and widened out at the end to about 12’ wide. We had three barrels per 10 ft section. It was a larger lake. We could pull the ski boat up to it.
Good Morning Al, Gina and Olivia
Love watching your new projects. We definitely can use a lot of your rain out here in California. Please send it our way.
I wish, I had your confidence in working with wood this way. Not sure, raising the water level is a good idea, though. It will have an impact on the surrounding area and ground as well.
When you build the other part of the dock and attach it, it will greatly improve the floating stability of the first part.
Jumping off the dock was the best fun when I was a kid. Loving your peaceful pond and its surroundings.
AWESOME!!! LOVE IT.
We have a spring fed pond. Did have cat tail on one side for baby fish to hide in. Lots of fish. County cleaned out all the cat tails and now very few fish. Always leave a few cat tails over the years as you will be cleaning out some every few years.💕💕💕💕
Good morning, Lumnah family! I'm a little surprised you didn't build in your shop and haul it to the property. It appears to have turned out just fine. Maybe two barrels, lengthwise for the next one for stability! Love the progress, stay the course!
Good morning Lumnah family and friends from NE Mississippi! Hope everyone is well!
what you need on the off-grid property is a wood mizer LT70 sawmill make your own wood, you have plenty of trees on the off grind property. also for the new house that you want to build I think it saves a lot of money. and it's also fun to make videos for KZread. greetings from the Netherlands

Not code unless you get the lumber dried and graded for a house. However you can use ungraded for outbuildings and barns so it would be wise in the end. Just have to buy framing lumber for any place that is used for human housing.

Al, when I lived in NJ, I used to repair the docks at my marina. We found that barrels weren’t stable enough. We used styrofoam that measured about 10”x10” and I think they were about 8-10 feet long. Since they were flat, the docks were pretty sturdy. I’m guessing that you will start the house maybe next year? If you lived down here, you’d have beautiful weather all year long. I sometimes miss the 4 seasons.
@markpashia7067
3 жыл бұрын
@@Naplesfrank154 We did that also in Missouri but then found that the Styrofoam allowed bad algae to grow on it. Bad for the environment. Maybe if cut to size then coated with something. Do some homework.
I like your dock. Reminds me of a raft we had as kids. It lasted for years.
What an interesting project. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome place.
The longer you guys take to post a new video. The more opportunity I have to rewatch your old videos. Win-Win!!!
Put a barrel either side at the furthest out part of the floating platform to give it more stability or you will keep going for a swim when you meant to go fishing 👍
The lumber that has been stored in warehouses from the bidding war is gradually being sold off and now we are getting back to normal prices. There was far more framing lumber stored than treated. Love the drill/hammer combo you have there. The battery is real strong and can take that beating.
BEAUTIFUL
Having had a pond or two, I can tell you that you are really gonna like the overall effect when you bring that pond up 8 or 10 inches... It will really look different... Good start on the dock...

Brilliant idea with the floating dock! Looking good so far. The walkway part of the dock I think will stabilize when you attach the 8x8 ft dock platform. If not, use two barrels lengthways beside each other at the walkway end. Connect walkway and platform with a hinge. To prevent sideways movement you could drive down say 2.5" pipes on either side of the walkway into the pond bottom.
Good stuff!!
Nice dock!

This is not the dock, it is only the walkway. Once the dock is built and all are attached properly it will be very stable and Gina will relax. Besides what is the worse that could happen? you fall in the water??? No worries if you can swim. Not even a long fall. Gina is a worry wart sometimes and Al likes to tease her on occasion it seems.
PVC pipe driven into the pond bottom will allow the dock to move up and down, but offer stability as well when you mount sleeves to the dock in which to put the pipe. We did a floating dock in Wisconsin shaped like a T that way, but allowed us to retrieve it in the winter as well. You may adjust with filling the barrels with some water too, trying the height of the dock.
Your floating dock will be fantastic when you get it completed Al. Maybe go into a pool store and see about adding a dock ladder too.
Good morning from Connecticut, We almost ended up in your guys area this past weekend but ended up in Maine. Dock will be a nice addition, We just put a boulder out in ours lol!
Great video and it’ll be great to just sit and fish soon
Al: Great start on your new dock! I'm not sure that just one barrel will be enough support if you have more than just a couple of people on it at the same time. One way to achieve several benefits would be to consider adding a Tee-piece (of similar dimensions as your original) across the outer edge of the dock and add a couple of barrels under it for extra flotation support. This will not only increase the dock's stability, it would provide more casting space when several people want to fish at the same time. If visiting kids want a place to jump or dive off, you've met that need too. Just a thought for you to consider.
Looks great nice video

Hello David, hope you have a wonderful day!
Our lumber prices are still through the roof! Great job on the dock!
Your dock reminds me of one we used while camping in Maine many years ago. This dock had a ladder on the side you climbed up to get our of the water. Someone had to be standing on the other side of the dock when you climbed up or it would lift right out of the water! Great video! I think a lot of people are missing the fact that you will be adding onto the dock.
