Building a custom strip planked, carbon fiber composite boat in the backyard, part one.

Timelapse of building the the Spear-It One, a custom boat for southern California freediving and spearfishing. Part one.
This is the actual strip planking of her hull, which is mostly 1/2" western red cedar with a white oak keel (solid and steam bent composite) and steam bent chines. To get the curves of her bow I went with 2 layers of 1/4" western red cedar. Bulkheads are all composite marine ply and--to save weight--western red cedar. No nails, screws, or plastic left in the final build. Using West Systems epoxy.

Wow young man! What a stunning project! A self build, purpose built spearo boat just blows my mind! Love your undoubtable boat building skills/artistry too! Having chatted with you online before regarding 3D printing guns this inspirational build is so very clearly not to be missed. Astonishing! SUBD, LIKED and SHARED! Thanks for including us! Hooked!

Very nice! It's an impressively deep hull. Is that a gear/radar tower in the back of the boat over the transom? Looking forward to seeing more

Yes, that rack'll be for gear, antenna and white all around light. I'm not doing a radar at this time but if I add one it'd go there.

one of those new plastic nail guns would have saved a lot of work.... I think there is only one company making them so not very cheap. It shoots a plastic composite nail that can be cut and sanded..

@@poepflater I don't plan to do another strip plank build that is quite this elaborate anytime soon, but at the same time I have thousands of miles and about ten years with plastic boats (PVC inflatables)... Drove me a little nuts so I wanted to do an old school performance build. I have been too busy to add timelapse to this channel but she is almost finished--and not a spec of plastic (okay I admit epoxy is a polymer) in her. Just wood and fiber composite and 316 stainless.

@@SoCalSpearIt Yeah the plastic nails is just to save time, you can basically work with other tools as if they are not there.... unlike hitting a nail with a plane etc...

I have a ton of footage, just gotta edit it. I'm actually done with the exterior glass, CF, paint (that'll be part two perhaps?), and got all the interior below decks built out and plumbed--tomorrow I start laying the first layer of the deck in.

What exactly is the brown liquid you're applying early in the video?

  • @SoCalSpearIt

That's probably thickened epoxy. I'm using exclusively West Systems, mostly 105 and some of the G-Flex. They have a brownish/purplish low density thickener, the 407, that I mix with the 105 for better lamination and fairing.

@@davidcummings6299 I did shoot all the way through the hull build but enthusiasm for the timelapse and filmmaking aspect gradually became replaced by 'oh dear god I have to get this thing finished so my personal and professional life can go on' I'm basically 38 months into what I thought would be a 6 month project and every second spent farting with cameras or edits becomes a second I'm not working on the boat. So, I get grumpy here in the comments. I'm out of the country at the moment but realized I brought a drive with more footage on it so I can start editing a second installment.

Most of the carbon fiber work was finished months ago. Please feel free to check my insta for more current updates. Carbon fiber isn't cheap but try pricing out kiln dried furniture quality white oak, western red cedar and mahogany, plus an All-Salt Shoxs pedestal, all 316 stainless fittings, and kevlar and S-glass cloth. Compared to those materials, carbon fiber is 'average'. But, this type boat is expected to last 50+ years, and as a commercial captain I will likely put thousands of miles a year on her so the weight savings and durability is worth it to me. Plus she looks sexy.
