BUILDING A CUSTOM 100 GALLON FUEL TANK // CENTRAL OKLAHOMA CUSTOM WELDING

BUILDING A CUSTOM 100 GALLON FUEL TANK // CENTRAL OKLAHOMA CUSTOM WELDING
In this video, we are back in the welding fabrication shop working on welding fabrication projects specifically a custom fuel tank. I’m Austin Ross of AROSSWELDING and on this channel, I share my experiences as a rig welder and what I have going on in my own mobile welding business. These types of tanks are referred to as auxiliary tank, drag up tank, fuel cell, portable fuel tank, and farm fuel tank. We go over what fuel tank baffle are and fuel tank baffle design in this specific custom fabrication fuel tank build. Watch till the end for how to build a custom fuel tank or how to build steel fuel tank, metal fuel tank, or weld fuel tank. For more custom welding, fab shop, and mobile welding videos subscribe to austin ross welding channel.

    Nice job. To make this pass CARB and DOT crash testing. Form your baffle @ 90* so it's a 1¹/²" flange. Weld the front of the flange to the tank body. This allows the baffle to expand during a crash and not rip a hole in the tank body. Also connect a flat or round bar from the fill neck to about 1" from the bottom of the tank. CARB and Los Angeles Fire Department require this. It's under believe that fuel free falling over 10" can create a static charge. Also 112 gallons is the most you are allowed to haul above your frame rails with out a HAZMAT license. I've built fuel tanks for dang near 20 years. But nice job! I'm enjoying your channel!

    Can you explain the baffle part again? Would the baffle be parallel to the floor or turned 90 from where he put it? And what flange are you talking about? Thanks

  • @danielellis2617

    @danielellis2617

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@cjgibbons5850 no problem! The way he has the baffle it's a flat plate welded directly to the tank body. This causes a direct pull on the on the tank body. This can tear a hole in the tank. In an accident, or road vibrations you want the baffle to flex. To do this cut the baffle 3" taller and 3" wider than the inside dimension of the tank. Then bend 1.5" of the baffle at 90* on all 4 sides. Basically creating a tab on all 4 sides. Then weld the very front of this tab to the tank body. This will allow there to be flex at the 90* bend. An not a straight pull on the tank body. I hope that makes sense. It's kinda hard to explain but it's super easy. I wish I could post a drawing here. Lol

    It came out nice! One recommendation I can make if you ever make another fuel tank, especially aluminum, is to put a stiffener or gusset inside of the fitting that will have the pump in it. Vibration going down the road, pumps getting hit, hoses getting pulled seem to stress that area. That looked like heavy material so it’ll be years before there’s an issue. More than likely there won’t be. Take care!

    Yes , I was gonna say the same I used to weld for a fueling company and this was the number one issue repairing pump bases that cracked depending on the pumps they can be pretty heavy. I would always put 4 small gussets on the coupling just something to think about on the next one.

    One of my first jobs out of high school was where they made air filter boxes for trains and semi trucks. Similar too your fuel tank only much smaller, about the size of a micro wave oven. The welders used mig process. After they finished, my job was to put seals on the openings, rubber gaskets, and fill them with air pressure, then push them under water in a tank and look for bubbles, leaks, mark them and send any leakers back to the welders to fix. Interesting job right out of high school.

    Great build Austin....before I was a farmer I worked for a company wholesaling tanks in Texas and Oklahoma...and most of the defects we saw would be from cracks around the nipple where the pump was mounted. Most of the tanks we sold over time started reinforcing that area where the pump was. It also was a big plus if the installers cut a piece of rubber and put under the tanks when mounting....or got the fancy mounting kit Weatherguard made.

    Hi Austin. I came to your Channel over the Sidebar of YT, while watching Andrew Camaratas Videos. Im from Germany, im not a professional Welder. I am an Electrician, doing Welding only for repairing my Stuff like a Hobby. Its very interesting to see, how made the Jobs done in other countries. I started Welding about 3 Years ago with Tig. I found it the easyest Way. I thought its a little like soldering Wires, or soldering Copper Pipes with a Torch, so for me it was easy to learn. For some thin Metal works at my Car, I bought a MIG Machine, witch also can Stick Rods and a Plasma Cutter. Next Thing i want to try is with the Stick Rods. In your Videos i can see how good they work outside in the Field, for example at windy Conditions. Seems like a good Option, between the MIG Machine with a Flux cored Wire and the Stick Rods. At least for higher Currents 150 Amps plus, cause the MIG Cable (does it mean Cable or Hose in English?!? XD) is getting quiet hot very fast at these Amps. I also use a Propane Oxy Torch, but only for heating Things, loosening Bolts not for Cutting. For me Propane is much cheaper than Acethylen/ Ethin. 22l (11kg) Propane are about 18$ and for 20l (4kg) Acethylen the Gasguy charge about 100$...

Curious Did you check for leaks? Im sure its fine, but alot easier to fix before it gets filled with flammable liquids. Curious also could you have also just broke the pieces into essentially two “ U” shapes and nested them together? Although really probably winds up being similar amount of welding either way i suppose. Awesome job !

    Excellent workmanship! However, would it be prudent to pressurize the vessel with a few pounds of air and soap test all the welds prior to filling with fuel? Asking for a friend.

    No doubt. I've installed dozens of new tanks in boats, and every time I picked them up from fabricator he had them pressurized so I could see them holding air. He would then soap the welds in front of me.

    Do you soap test it for leaks? We used to put about 5 psi air pressure in the tanks and put soapy water on all the welds checking for leaks.

    Hey Austin. I watch few of Youre vids. I think that camera likes You and thats a good thing :) I`m from Poland. I work in Powerplants and mines as a construction workes, welder helper and now as a foreman. I`m not affraid of physical work, more that that, I like it. I Like to be tired but watch at my work and be proud of it. I was wondering. Is that any chance that a man with almost 15 years od experiance with angle grinders and other stuff can aply for a welder helper job in a pipeline ? Is there a staff deficit in this profession? I ask purely theoretically. Stay safe, good day !
