Building a Camera Rig? Start Here.

Фильм және анимация

I show you how to build out a camera rig for any mirrorless or DSLR camera. This setup can be done with the Fujifilm X-T4, Sony a7siii, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k Pro/6k/4k, Canon R5, or honestly just about any other camera as long as you have a cage. I break down different options so you can choose the camera parts and accessories that are right for your own setup.

    For me a full rig like that with a V-mount battery, rods, follow-focus and matte box is just way too BIG. Could you make another great video about "a minimalist rig for handheld shooting with the X-T4"? I am building mine with side handles and an external monitor, all of which can be easily detached as they have quick release NATO clamps. That way I can very quickly return back to the simple X-T4 + cage setup for photos and more discreet run&gun shooting.

    yeah, that's true there are some really bad magic arms. I've used a few decent magic arms that are more expensive, but even still they have their limitations and eventually give way to gravity and enough weight. that's why i just prefer different rigging options.

    Would you recommend powering the camera by USB-C rather than using a dummy battery? Does that mean you keep the regular battery in the camera and basically "charge" it while its inside the camera? Do you have to be careful with voltage with USB-C or is that more for when using dummy batteries and d-taps?

  • @chadwin

    @chadwin

    3 жыл бұрын

    With the Fujifilm X-T4, they recommend powering it via USBC. I can’t even find a dummy battery for that cam. You have to leave the battery in and yes It does charge the battery. The usb power output is lower (I think around 8v) so it won’t fry the camera. For most other cams, you can find dummy batteries though that work! Either way is good IMO.

    I've been learning filmmaking and editing videos for a while now and I'm ready to make the first big investment. I want a camera system that's reliable for getting into professional client work but is still within my budget. I'm looking at spending no more than $1000-$1400 on a camera body and no more than $1000 on a one and done lens. And then after that I'd spend no more than $500 on rigging like a cage, monitor, etc. I'd love your recommendation for a first time reliable and professional camera system. I'd also be willing to buy used gear. Thank you! (I've been looking at the gh5 but I'd love to hear what you have to say.)

  • @chadwin

    @chadwin

    3 жыл бұрын

    Okay, that's a tough one to say exactly because there are so many great options. However, i think the Blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k is a great place to start, big screen so you don't need an external monitor right away, has BRAW, great color science, etc. but you will need to rig it out some and always manual focus. if you want great autofocus and photos capabilites, I'd get the Sony a66600! If you want nice colors and 10bit, i'd get a used X-t3, great photos, decent autofocus. As far as lenses, again depends on if you want AF or manual focus. So maybe the Sigma 18-35 as a good all around lens.
