Building a bushranger: Relocating Ned Kelly's armour

Ned Kelly's armour is State Library Victoria's most popular (and most controversial) collection item. In this video, Conservation Manager Jane Hinwood discusses the armour's cultural significance, its place in the Library's collection, and shares lesser known details about the armour's history.
Watch rare footage of the armour being cleaned, including fascinating details on the inside of the armour, before it's moved to its new display case.
A free permanent display of Ned Kelly's armour is now showing in the South Rotunda.

My friends mother used to run errands around Melbourne lane ways when she was young, she told me that the armour used to be hung up in Bourke Street for display & she would run past & tap each suit to get different sounds...🙂🇳🇿

What a perfect answer. : If the armorer could talk it would tell us some interesting stories, I hold one of the railway spikes gifted to me years ago from an elderly descendant that was lifted from the intended train derailment 15 years ago.

It was an answer, but it certainly didn't answer the question posed in any way at all. I thought she might have given us a line or two that Ned might have said himself...something like ""Well, ain't it a grand show they've put on here? My armor and that old judge, reunited in one place for all to see. I reckon I'd say it's a fine way to keep the past in the present - though I might have preferred a different kind of reunion back in the day....."

The Two Gardens. How wrong you are. There is a large statue of Sir Redmond Barry in a prominent place outside the State Library of Victoria. Barry did a great deal to help build the new colony of Victoria, including starting the library, a university, and a museum. May I ask what did your mate Ned Kelly do, other than rob from poor settlers, then stand over them like the thug he was. Ned Kelly was a vicious criminal who was a murderer, he held up banks, took hostages and robbed from them. He was a thief and a stand-over-thug, and a prolific liar. What a weird attitude you are displaying towards a man who did a great deal for ALL the people of Victoria.

I think the message in what the archivist implies is that His Honour is out in the street in the cold and being shat on by the birds and pissed on by the drunks whereas Ned's "statue" suit is wrapped in protection and stored in an air conditioned building.

My father actually wore Ned's armour in 1938. He had a school mate whose mother was Isabel Green, secretary to the trustees of the Exhibition Building, The Palais and the Aquarium. Isabel was the sister of Sir Robert Menzies. Max was obviously a bit of a lad (Scallywag).

I have actually worn Ned Kelly's armour Back around 1965 I was in Scouts . We had a fete to raise money for the troop. One of the members was a serving Police member as an added attraction we had a tent set up I think it was 50 cents admission on the side of our hall in the tent we had various pieces of Ned Kelly's armour and weapons borrowed from the police museum. Nobody knew the tent was there. It was suggested we needed some publicity so I was chosen to wear the armour with a billboard hung on the front to publicise the exhibits we had set up at the side of the hall. I can remember it was quite heavy and uncomfortable at the time the significance of what I was wearing really didn't occur to a sixteen-year-old. Of course, now it is only handled with gloves on in those days it wasn't classified as the historical item it is today. I can still remember the smell of iron and leather.

Its interesting they thought the back plate belonged to Dan, I'm thinking they must of found it in the pub with Dan, maybe Ned took it off so he could move easier, his arm was barely hanging on early in the shoot out.He made it about 100 metres away from the pub during the night to try and flank the police, so that's my guess with little info. He wouldn't need the back plate so much as the front, especially if he got behind the coppers as he did.

It's an interesting fact that several of the early commentators and authors refuse to except that the other gang members also owned helmets to compliment their armour. Despite the fact that Dan and Steve's helmets were photographed together on the day of the siege. Along with eye-witness accounts of Joe Byrne's body being dragged out of the burning inn with '...his helmet dragging along the ground. Attached to his armour by a thong of wire...' Despite the obvious, they kept on writing about 'bogus helmets beginning to appear'. On the same day of the siege? Really??

The armour is placed in such a way that if one tries to take a photograph facing the armour, there is a large window directly behind the armour that effectively closes down the aperture on camera's that makes it difficult to photograph properly.

Police today are almost as brutal & corrupt as in Ned's day (who will ever forget Melbourne lockdowns. Old lady bashed to ground & pepper sprayed, pregnant woman in pyjamas arrested in home etc) Image back in the 1870s when the law WAS the big landowners who had the police & judges in their pockets. A poor man had no chance. Ned was a product of this & his hatred of the 'traps' grew with every outrage. The fact is a Royal Commission into the 'affair' was conducted in early 1881 they recommended the sacking of two police Superintendents, a police inspector being retired & several other officers reduced in rank. The charge of attempted murder of constable Fitzpatrick by Ned & his brother Dan was found to be false. Fitzpatrick was later dismissed from the police force on several counts & that he 'could not be trusted out of sight & never did his duty'. The police in the bush were notorious for corruption & lagging innocent men for monetary reward from rich land owners who lost livestock. Any man would do so long as the police got their reward. Many innocent people spent years locked up in hell holes while the police conducted themselves like tyrants - which was also raised in the Royal Commission & was one of Ned's grievances. Just look at the police shooting peaceful innocent protesters in Victoria recently & the brutal way they conducted themselves. Nothing has changed in Victoria. I had the privilege of speaking with Ern Straughair from Benalla in 1991. This man knew Jim Kelly, Ned's brother. He told me that during the police stakeout on the Kelly homestead, Kate Kelly was raped by the police when she went for a horse ride. She was 15. She went to Melbourne for a 'holiday' (abortion) & at 35, committed suicide due to the trauma.
