In this video I am building frame 2. This is the first of the frames that will be visible within the finished boat and so I am going to a few extra measures to make this one extra beautiful!
I am veneering the bulkhead so I show you how I re saw veneers and then glue them to the plywood using a vacuum bagging technique. I then build a lamination that runs around the aperture in the bulkheads opening to soften and protect its edges.
We finish up with a CNC frame carving process to cut the bevels and notches into the frame and it turns out to be the best one that I have done yet!

Excellent. Hope we all remember your “someday I’ll be crawling through this” and put that clip side-by-side with you crawling through with fenders! You are setting the bar, Dan.

Please remind me if I forget about it Mark, it will be a few years away yet, here’s to hoping I can get there 🤞
This is the most jealous I've ever felt watching a youtube build. Your techniques are right up my street!

If this is any indication of the finished project, this is going to be one beautiful boat. Looking forward to every video!

I hope so, it should be one big piece of beautiful floating furniture 😄
For the glue up of the inner ring laminates you could use urea formaldehyde glue. It has a long open time, can be tinted, and has a much easier clean up
Thoughtful episode as always, Dan. Slip matching straight grained material is lovely, too.
Nice work and very infomrative

Great work Dan, brilliant idea to veneer the bulkhead, your attention to detail does not go unnoticed, very satisfying to get some “finishing” done at this early stage in the build, great video! Thanks.
Watching from NZ and so pleased that the small industries are doing well - We used to live in Chalford Hill - well done the Cotswolds

Beautiful workmanship Dan interested to see the veneered way of finishing the plywood. I love the smell of West Epoxy !

Thank you! I don't mind the smell... I much prefer it to polyester resin 🤧
Excellent! Great looking boat frame. Here in Peterborough, Ontario, I am building a sliding seat rowing wherry ('Liz' designed by Ken Bassett).
Work of art! Seems ashame that these parts end up hidden Progressing well with the frames and also with the development of the process

Wow wow wow! Exceptional results, and I am learning so much from your technique that I will apply to my own wood projects. Keep up the long form episodes, it’s great to see all the steps.

Thank you very much!
Dan, This is such a wonderful project and the more I watch the more awsome it gets - I am so looking forward to watching the final stages and launch. Looks like a welcome rival to any one of those Italian jobs - Perhaps you could remember to stamp "Made in England" on the transom.

Thanks Graham, I'll get a stamp in there somewhere for sure. Not sure quite where yet, I was considering it for somewhere on this frame right up at the front of the boat.
Beautiful! And thank you for explaining the vacuum system components. Really helpful for those of us who plan to build only one boat in life!

Thanks, how could I not be enjoying this... I've been itching to get started on a new build ever since I finished the last one about 5 years ago 😄
Beautiful work!
Dan, given your expected time line, how are you storing the frames so they don’t discolour with oxidation? It would be a huge job to sand every surface prior to finish.
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
23 күн бұрын
Right now I haven't yet decided. The frames will be epoxy coated but I haven't yet made up my mind as to when that will be. Ultimately there will be lots of sanding required at some stage down the line!
Great ideas and wonderful work, I am very impressed. Can you tell me if you are making one bulkhead why not three or four as the operation appears to lend itself to automation. Thank you
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
25 күн бұрын
Thank you. I have three bulkheads like this to do in total and yes doing them in batches would certainly be the best move. This one was a bit of an experiment though to get my head around how I might do it. Thats the fancy way of me saying I'm making this up as I go along 😆 Now I know how many veneers I'll need and have a good system sorted I'll probably do the next two together in a batch.
Brave ! After all that build work I would do a dry run of the CNC with a rubber tool in the head !

Your attention to detail would have you up there with the multimillion dollar yachts How are you funding this Dan? Are you selling it when done? It feels like a lot of commitment for a love project Keen to see the build progress 👏
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
24 күн бұрын
Thank you! Right now I am trying to fund this build myself, basically doing a bit as and when I can afford to with the hopes I can increase income through the video series and Patreon etc to start getting things moving. That's going to be a steep hill to climb though, particularly towards the later stages of the build. I may have to sell the boat at some stage or otherwise look for investment or funding but for now I am just seeing how things go. At least doing this off my own back means I can have full control over the details, some of which may take me a huge amount of time that I might not be able to afford if I were working to a price with the boat. The dash and gauges for example I have some pretty cool ideas looming for, I want to hand make each individual gauge like an expensive watch... thats a little way off yet though.

@@DanLeeBoatbuildingwell I hope you continue to get the support you need. Re: manufacturing gauges, have you seen "Totem Automobili" the bloke is 28yrs old and remanufactured an entire vehicle, including gauges and all internal mechanisms. I don't think he has information on how, maybe that's something you could share if we get there. Best of luck
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
24 күн бұрын
I'll get there one way or another! I'll take a look at that, gauges are just an idea at the moment so it would be great to pull in some inspiration from others especially when it comes to making the internals.
Hey Dan, what an extraordinary mix of traditional and modern skills so well presented. It’s quite scary the amount of investment involved in preliminary build-ups to then yield your work to a two-sided CNC 3D carve. Do you see a situation where a similar shaped but obviously less perfect boat can be done with just 2D profiling of parts?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
24 күн бұрын
Thanks. Yes it is a little nerve racking putting a frame that I've spent circa 20 hours working on back onto the machine with a big spiral bit in it! I am getting more used to what the program is going to do though so it's less scary each time. This boat can be built just going straight from the 2D profiled stage and that is actually how I have designed the plans/parts to be. In that instance all of those cutouts would be done as the chines, topside battens and sheer clamp are installed... the old school way :)

@@DanLeeBoatbuilding Thank you Dan, that’s interesting, I will be in touch and ask advice which plan you suggest first time out for a novice boatbuilder with reasonable 2D CNC experience. Maybe Temptress is too ambitious. I think purchase of a Boat Study Plan would be the best way to visualise the operations.
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
24 күн бұрын
Temptress is a little ambitious for a first time builder but doable. Bob Kody in the US is building one as his first boat build. Of course he’s working from a great set of plans 😉
Love your work. definitely a dream to build something like this one day instead of a plane. I love your resin pump. is there any chance you can tell me some info on this please?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
22 күн бұрын
Sure, the resin pump is available from West System and it meters both components at the same time. It is available for either of the 5:1 or 3:1 ratio epoxies.
The moulding turned out beautifully following a clever design process. Of course the veneer speaks for itself, and your persistent attention to detail is exemplified by veneering the inside of what is essentially a locker - outstanding! Two quick questions. Did you wax the clothesline clips or otherwise treat them as to avoid getting them glued on? I presume the frame bevels are rolling. Is this something you programmed in or will you later address by hand? If the answer is yes to programming, please don’t tell me how because I wouldn’t understand!
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
24 күн бұрын
I didn't wax the pegs but I did remove them whilst the epoxy was still soft, had I let that fully cure I'd have been chiselling them off I'm sure! Yes the bevels are rolling, particularly on the bottom which is slightly convex. Difficult to explain how I do this but I've added it to my list of things to put in a future video next time I'm doing the programming for it :)
My man, please buy you a battery router. That way you wont have to fight that cord the entire build. I believe you will thank me at the end of the build

Got to watch the pennies right now so new tools will have to take a back set for a while in favour of saving up for the next wood order 😔
I would also like to make a boat one day, but fuel is so expensive so I will probably have to limit my use of it very much.

Learn to sail maybe? My Dad was living in lodgings during the week, with his landlord conivance he built a dinghy in an outhouse. It was such a tight squeeze that he had to take the door off its hinges to get it out. That was fifty years ago. My sister still has the boat.

Dan, do you have to adjust for bandsaw drift when resawing?

The bandsaw has to be well set up so it doesn't track off centre at all. I was going to show the setup in this video but ran out of time. I might show this in the next video where I'll be doing some more re sawing for the stem laminations.
This is cruel. Lovely work, but I should not be watching this. I can feel a third boat build coming on and that’ll go down like the Titanic with my wife!
