Building a Backyard Launch Roller Coaster
Ғылым және технология
This has been a massive project which I have been working on the last few months. A rollercoaster in my backyard, powered by a 90mm air ram developing over 1200 pounds of thrust. Check out Part 2 to see how it works!
Credit to CoasterBot for the park footage.

That piston design is brilliant. Backyard rollercoasters will soon be usurping swimming pools, trampolines and jungle gyms as the new norm in home recreation.
Can you make a dedicated video to just the launching mechanism

Wow, surprised that you only have 9k subs :)
This is really impressive to make of all the coaster out of a posted stamp size backyard
Wow this is just brilliant! What an inventive way to make a backyard coaster! How much was the cost of all of this?

Can you do a video on just the piston?
This is freaking great. I totally need to do this
If you had the budget, EMT pipe would be killer for the rails! Would require pipe bending, but would hold up much better. Also, for safety, I'd also add bigger bottom casters. Rubber bumper at the end also instead of block of wood, as well as use of something over the piping on the last 6' to add friction to the rollers if this thing goes to far up!
You are awesome on making coasters 🔥
This is very cool!
I thought I was the only UK KZreadr building a Backyard coaster until I watched Will's video, your coaster looks great, I love that it's launched as well!
Could you please reply with a list of all the materials you used to make the launch piece?
greetings. it's safe??? caution. Success with the project.
very nice dude
I had a sigh of relief when you finally pulled out the impact driver. Driving screws with a drill is painful to watch.

@@WillFromLondon Impact drivers are great, but you should understand that an impact driver puts more stress on the screw. About one out of 20 screws I drive with an impact drill actually breaks either on installation, or later due to fatigue. A regular drill put less stress on the screw.

No, 1) it is called a launch coaster 2) the drum method is almost completely defunct, it is usually a hydraulic or a magnetic launch
@Alex-wn5rc
4 жыл бұрын
Technically a hydraulic launch uses a drum connected to hydraulic motors.
@sketchgarage6896
4 жыл бұрын
@@Alex-wn5rc yeah, but most hydraulic launches use a series of hydraulics to launch, instead of powering a drum, but even these are rare, as electromagnetic launchers are far more reliable

It looks like you used dense foam washers to seal the air at the piston. What would you think of a round seal flap, made of thin plastic sheet, attached to the piston, like a section of a very shallow angled cone, pointed aft so the pressure drives the flappy seal against the inner wall of the cylinder, without causing too much friction? I'll try to make a drawing.
@WillFromLondon

I ended up swapping out the foam for a leather cup, like a bicycle pump. It sealed very well but needed a small relief valve behind the piston in order to allow it to slide back without building up pressure.
I’m currently starting the construction of a launch coaster! :) Just a quick question, how did you connect the fittings and the hose to the tank and the piston? Many thanks and hope you and your family are well 👍🏼

What are you using to power it? Just a regular air compressor? I want to build something like this but with a different rack layout.
He is like another Dave hax
I really want to see how you connected the two pvc, and the pneumatic system! Do you happen to recall the set up?
Wow!!!
Hey, quick question. How did you bend the track, was it just from the force of the wood, or did you mold it? Thanks.
Also where did you connect the air tube to on the piston
I like it

Jan Demetrio it’s a conspiracy
Try using linear induction motors for the launch.
Cool
They actually work with a cable that pulls the car through the launch track
I am starting construction this Friday and i have a question, what is on the back of the PVC piston and the back of the PVC tank?
For the track did you just use regular PVC pipe? What size did you use and also how did you bend it. Some people have used ABS pipe. Do you think that would be better for a launch coaster like yours? I have built the piston but I am ready to get started on the track.
@WillFromLondon
4 жыл бұрын
callan R I just used 40mm 10Bar (1.5” Sch40) for the track, and made 5 metre (16’) sections. I didn’t do anything to bend the track, the PVC is flexible enough to just form into the shape you need as long as you aren’t doing tight bends. Then a wooden spine made from 1x2s was added to strengthen the whole thing up. Send me a link when your builds done! I’d love to see it.
They can actually use more than a cable those kind with a cable is a hydraulic launch but there is also a air launch,LSM,LIM luanch
cool
Very cool, sir. Question: could a steam-powered catapult ( like ones used on older aircraft carriers) work? I rode Montezuma's Revenge (no longer there) @ Knott's Berry Farm in the 70's. My inner-child is curious.

what would happen if the air cannon had half the pressure, half the volume, and the person riding it weighed half as much?

You could half the volume or the pressure if you have half the weight, if you half both you would only have apx 25% of original.
you should have used magnets like alot of different launch coasters do

You coul’ve used a system similar to Top Thrill Dragster where there is a magnet on the underside of the car, which “connects” to a magnet on the track. He magnet on the track will then launch forward taking the car with it. This would likely be more expensive, but it could travel faster, and the design would be simpler (The train wouldn’t need a bumper for the piston to push).
@WillFromLondon
4 жыл бұрын
ColtonSuper Game it would be an amazing system that’s for sure, just a little outside of my budget unfortunately. I built this whole thing for around £350 ($400). I know that Will Pemble on YT is trying something like that though, you should check him out!
@protowave

Dragster doesn't use magnets for launching; it uses a steel hook called a "launch dog" that drops down from the 3rd car of the train into a shaped groove in the catchcar the brakes are no-contact magnetic, though.
What type and size of pvc was used for the piston?
