I was thinking a functional tiny diesel engine which would be sic, but just a model, cool in its own right, but nothing more than a heavy expensive ornament!

same here. in hindsight, guess i was kinda stupid to think the pressures of a functional diesel engine could be contained in a model engine.

The day they make a little engine that actually runs on diesel would be a dream come true. I'd buy the hell out of them. I wonder if they can make one that runs on diesel since the compression would have to be high....and the parts would have to be pretty strong.

There are model-diesel engines, but they run on a petroleum-ether-oil mix. Some can apparently run on pure petroleum/oil when warmed up. They also do use a carburetor, and therefore are actually HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engines, not true diesels. Since they are pretty reliable once you got the hang of tuning them correctly, especially if you run them WOT all the time, they were really popular for model airplanes in the 1950s-1960s.

@@VintageTechFan Model diesel engines run on Kerosene/ether/oil mix, not petrol. Keep in mind, too, that all those methanol powered glow plug engines are also a form of diesel.

@@tedsmith6137 Confused the terms here, german word "petroleum" is more or less kerosene. And nope. Glow plug engines aren't diesels. It's a common misconception, but they do not fire by compression but rather by catalytic process on the glow element, which contains platinum/rhodium and sometimes other noble metals for this reason.

@@goose-the-gamer if you put an electric motor in them. There are also miniature engines the size of the one in this video and smaller that run, but they are not called models. A model engine is not a real engine.

Gotta love it when someone puts a engine together with no gaskets or torque wrench....

@@migueldenboer5186 Alright, I am going to try and be nice here. Your statement tells me you know little about piston engines. First, there are big oval holes at the bottom of the cylinders. So, we would need sleeves to fix that. Next, there are no piston rings. Gotta fix that. No working fuel system or ignition system. The list goes on and on. I have been working with miniature airplane engine for 65yrs, glow, diesel and spark ignition, so I have had a little experience with the subject. PS. The oval holes in the cylinder's would work if this were a model of a 2strok Detroit diesel engine. But then you must have a supercharger to bring fresh air in and exhaust gases out. 'Nuff said, my fingers are tired.

A miniature true diesel would be extremely hard to manufacture and exspensive! The biggest obstacle would be the injectors. Maybe the precision machines used to make Rolex parts could possibly do it.

It has been done but more so the old design used it ships. The big exposed conrod single or 2 piston style.

What you need is skill not a watchmakers lathe. A watchmakers lathe will be ill suited to it (I've got 22 lathes at the moment so can comment on the relative merits lol) Any small lathe will do, i.e. myford or maximat.

Fascinating! I wouldn't turn one of those kits down at my place. Not very impressed with the tappets being so loose in their bores though...

I skipped though and the moment I saw the radiator (where I skipped too) I knew it was fake. The filter, pump and injectors were all blank casts not to mention you can't run a common rail diesel without an ecu to control the injectors or run high pressure fuel through flimsy rubber tube. Might have been more believable if they used the old style injector pump and fake hard lines.

My Neighbor built a 1/4 Scale Caterpillar gasoline engine from scratch and it ran on Propane .. He also built a 1/6th scalle 1/3 scale and 1/2 scale Case Steam Tractor based on 60 HP Case Blue Prints.

What's the break in period for that engine. That surface finish is gonna cause a lot of wear on that engine.

On 11:32, you should start in the middle and go outward. Mechanics may know that. Even though it's a smaller model, it still leaves a bothersome feeling

Replica you say... think you will be hard pressed to find a push rod common rail diesel without any injector control.

So what happened with the seals on the Pistons? Why didn't you grease the bearings each one that you're putting on? There's a lot that didn't get done

Disappointing that it’s not an actual running model. I was suspicious when I saw him assemble the pistons without rings. But the real give away was the big sight holes in the side of the cylinder walls. Seems like it could’ve been a running engine with just a little more in the manufacturing process.

Where are the Gaskets? Even if it's a small engine, it must have some. If not, you will have a lack of compression. The air goes through!
