Building a 100 year old design (DIY Coffee Table)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, we're building a coffee table inspired by antique furniture, a vintage African daybed to more specific.
We used two 5,1-meter pine boards (45x220mm) for this project, which we then cut up into 3x 175 cm boards for the top and 12x 32 cm pieces for the legs.
This was the cheapest and most convenient option for us, even though we didn’t need the full width for the tabletop.
To achieve the specific look that we wanted, we mainly used an Axe for the shape and a few different techniques to make it look old, such as gravel, steel brush, wood stain, and black paint.
What we used:
Stain - “Charcoal” colored
Paint - Black furniture paint (water-based)
Clear coat/Finish - Polyurethane lacquer (water-based)
This is just one of many woodworking projects and pieces of furniture we'll build on this channel with a DIY approach. We love woodworking and we're working on building most of our furniture ourselves, starting in the living room.

Hahaha, that’s hilarious. I don’t blame you! Thanks a ton, we really appreciate it!

This is the first video I've seen that goes for getting that "old needs restoration" look. I love it and I've gotta keep these old weathered boards I came into in their condition as much as possible yet maintain some sort of polish look.

That’s awesome! I’m so glad to that! It would be a dream to find genuine old boards & material in general to repurpose somehow! But if I don’t I’ll keep making imitations. I’d recommend using wax as a finish, I haven’t gotten to use it myself yet, but I’ve seen some amazing results with it. Keep them protected and still get have that matte realistic look, that they would have from wear/age. Thanks again for watching and the kind words ❤️ means the world!

Yes sir, thank you for the recommendation! That's what I got for me coffee table project, some natural minwax finish paste wax. I need ideas for legs tho. I've got 1x8's and some small trimmings to pick from but nothing for legs or substrate yet.

Looks like the tool that would have helped you is the Arbortech Turbo Plane. But I bet the faint marks of the ax left after sanding give it a unique look. Great job!

Yeah, you’re 100% correct, for sure! I would actually love to start with that to get the bulk off. Then swap to an axe/knife for details. Great tip, I’m definitely trying that next time! Thanks for the tip!

That was really entertaining and the table came out pretty cool. The only thing i was wondering now after a longer period...is the top too wobbly for drinks and stuff? Best regards from germany
@byferner
6 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! To be honest, I thought it would feel worse, but it doesn't really bother us that much and we haven't spilled any drinks because of it yet! 😁Me personally, I prefer the look over the convenience in this case. But with all that said, I can see how some people would get really annoyed or tired of it really fast! 😄

i love the shape and look of this. what is black wash? is it black paint that you just rub off quickly after applying or do you sand it off?
@byferner
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, really appreciate it! Yeah, black paint that we sanded off. I would rather use a water based color, thinning it out with water and try that first. But I do like the look after sanding it off too, haha. You can always do that afterwards though, if you don’t like how the black wash turned out 😊
I love this I want to do mix of this with the burn technique you did on the desktop! This will be for a desk though and I was wondering if all the divots wound cause wobble like if using a keyboard or example?
@jotooslo6056
3 жыл бұрын
Update: After two months I finished the desk last Saturday. I burned portions of it did the the gravel technique and hit it with both ends of a hammer. I hacked at all the edges and the middle of the desk leaving the edge closest to me and some of the middle section for a keyboard and mouse and it works and looks great! I will be posting more about it on my instagram @JoMendii if interested!

Oh and may I add that I used both the flatness of a belt sander and it’s curved edge to make more indentation variations and it worked wonderfully on the edges!

I just realized we’ve completely missed this comment 2 months ago :S we’re terribly sorry about that man! I guess that’s too late now! But I planned to use some kind of “desk/keyboard-pad” to even out small divots/bumps etc. We’ve had no problems so far using it 😊 Again, so sorry we missed your comment, glad you gave us an update! ❤️
