Builder transforms old RV into unique tiny home
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
When Joe Weissbeck lost his property in 2009, he began converting a rundown RV- purchased for $350- into a one-of-a-kind mobile home. While living in it, he tore it down completely and rebuilt it over the course of 3 years.
Resembling an animal or insect, the home is all aluminium and strips of recessed glass which expose the “ribs” (off-the-shelf vinyl fence posts which serve as structural support). This segmenting allows shards of light to enter the home and creates an almost scaled-like exterior.
Weissbeck spent just $5000 on materials, much of which was repurposed or found. Believing that small spaces need to be open, he left the entire space free of walls (even the toilet is just half-hidden by the kitchen sink) and lofted a skylit bedroom over the driver’s seat.
Weissbeck is currently parked in the desert of southeastern Oregon where the nearest grocery store is 120 miles away. He says when he’s taken the vehicle/home into town (it still drives), it gets a lot of attention. “People are drawn to something that is unique and unusual, our society is so boxed out… I get a lot of comments, they think it’s kind of space-shippy or kind of like an animal, or an insect of some sort.”

"Gotta keep doing it until you're done" Perfect advice. We all know someone with a really cool but never finished project.

Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with unfinished projects.
Your ending, his playing the piano, showing his old homes, what a wonderfully emotional moment! Thanks!
Humankind needs people like this
Not sure which is more fascinating -- the home or the builder. Love this creation. Thank you for sharing.
"The refrigerator that came with the RV committed suicide". I just about died laughing when he said that with such a sincere and shocked expression on his face! What a quirky, funny guy! He is the kind of guy that you would love to have in your group when sitting around the campfire at night-he would have everyone up way too late, laughing for hours at all his stories! Then you would finally stumble off to bed, only to be woken early the next morning by someone making coffee wayyyyyy too early singing happily to themselves!!

What an incredible architect this man is...love all of his designs and I despise sheet-rock too
I do Love builders!! I like what he has done, love that he has not spent loads of cash, I like the fact that he keeps busy, entertained with his projects he reminds me of my dad he's almost 80 years old and we still haul reclaimed wood from around the neighborhood BY FOOT, no car and up the hill. We put the wood on a dolly, tie it securely and star moving I get an internal very happy GIGGLE while I watch him pull the load of wood while I push. It makes me happy to see him active and strong instead of lethargic and depressed. I love doing this with my dad and BTW I'm a girl. So congratulations to this guy!! Keep doing your thing man, I've learned a few things from you today 💪✌

Spectacular and fascinating...both man and his creations. Thanks for sharing, Kirsten.
The real hero in all this is his friend who lets him do his laundry at their house.
70 but young at heart and what a positive attitude. He is quite an inspiration.
Wow! Where was this guy all my life? Kindred spirit. Love what he's been doing! Thing is, many of us have gotten beat-down by all those blocking our paths, naysayers, ridiculously closed-minded officials, etc., that it's difficult to impossible to bring our ideas to fruition. Hope he keeps on doing his thing, for many more years!!!
Love his child-likeness!
Really like him! He has a sweet soul and is a genius at building unique homes. We need more of him in the world.
Great job finding these types of alternative lifestyles. His ideas are very cool, rough in this last version but seeing the many beautiful foundational homes he has talent that is excellent in that it is not limited by others preconceived ideals. The use of light in ways outside of the box is very cool, as well as alternative idea about using fencing to frame it out. Witness to the mind of imagination and spirit of overcoming the losses he had. I say if the economy crashed and the world fell apart, this kind of unusruped tenacity would lead others into future that could overcome its past.
I adore this guy, his creativity, his sensibility, his home!
I am most impressed with how he gets around so well at 70.I am 48 and could not jump around like he is doing.
Very creative. A home looking like a movie prop.
Hi JOE, just watched this video, you have an amazing talent, love all the windows you used, some people may feel sorry for you for the way you live, THEY ARE CRAZY, this is a truly wonderful way to live, away from everything and almost everyone, your choice, some I think really resent that you can live this way, staying active doing what you enjoy is really healthy I think, keep enjoying what you are doing !
I just love how these people that choose to live this way are so full of life and passion about their projects. So humble and natural, free spirits. Damn, it's so inspiring to me.

What a brilliant mind set this man has. I love how he thinks. He just keeps trucking along allowing no limitations to his ideas or thought process. 💭💭 We do need more like minded people like him.
What a refreshing young man he is... I imagine he would be a great friend to have. Love his spirit and energy.

With the parrot on his shoulder he becomes alive as a regular Desert Pirate! Beautifully engineered design and I really appreciate the reuse of wood. I do a lot of that myself. I have shelves made of thrown out pine futons and beech chairs. I make frames out of broken Ash hockey sticks... it is some of the straightest grain wood you can get.
Creative, interesting, talented individual.
Thus is my favorite house ive seen on your channel. Ive been following you for four years. That man is a visionary.
The folks who create such structures are so fascinating! These mini documentaries are not just about tiny living spaces, they show the brilliance of the human mind, the capacity to go beyond our perceived limitations, and the ability to create beautiful things. And that we dont have to follow what everyone else is doing, and trap ourselves in a bubble. So many essential life lessons to be learned from this. So inspiring!

This guy is an artist. His art is created with confined budget. I would like to see what he can do with a large budget on a small home.
He's quite unconventional and for someone at 70, he definitely has the energy and excitement of a child. I'd have enclosed the toilet though.
You're not alone - I have compassion for inanimate objects, too, and so does my Aunt. I'm glad we're not the only ones.
What an awesome and amazing build... Love the creativity
I love his reuse ideas. We need more people to adapt this mentality. It shocks me what people are constantly throwing out.

Mad Max. Looks like he had fun. I am happy for him. YOU GO JOE. Pretty cool.
Very, very, nice, I love the sky light window!
very unique ..love it...God bless.
Great home. The contrast from outside to inside is amazing. I like his skylight. Now I want one. I knew someone who had a huge weird old skylight in her bedroom with separate panes separated with mullions. It seemed rather odd, but I am sure more interesting to see the sky than a ceiling fan. I like how creative he is with butterflying wood to double the coverage area. He is an talented architect and engineer by the looks of his work.
I love the interior! Very simple but gorgeous!
I can see myself when I'm 70 years old to be just like this guy.. build my own house and get it done right and then some.. I'm a perfectionist. My room is always made, my closet is always in perfect shape. I clean my house every day. Not a day goes by that I lay around being cauch potato. Props to this man. I hope he enjoys every his life and his house every day.

This gentleman is delightful. What a wonderful and creative talent. The juxtaposition of a cool futuristic modern exterior with a rustic , earthy interior was refreshing. Kirsten, While I am impressed with the cost and the overall design and creativity, it seems to be a template to be used to inspire people to utilize the ideas Joe has implemented and perhaps upgrade the products used in the construction, in hopes of it being stronger and more maneuverable, so it would not have to be hauled to a destination, but driven, (in case of whatevers). The setting and environment Joe has chosen for his home are the things dreams (My Dreams) are made of. : ) I Love all of his designs he allowed us to view, showing some of his wonderful talent. Joe has such a young, creative and whimsical personality and is a truly inspiring person. Thank You Kirsten, as you have once again brought us something Unexpected and Enjoyable.
