Build Your Own Work Surface || Miter Saw Station

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Having a good work surface in your woodshop is a must. But a good worktop is not something you can just buy at the store. Sometimes you have to take things into your own hands. In this video, I show you how to build a worktop that features a laminated surface, maple edge banding, and combination track with Woodpeckers Stealth Stops. Combination track combines both t-track and miter track. The best of both worlds.
So if you are looking to build a new bench top, work surface, or some DIY countertops, this could be your solution. These worktops are easy to build and are relatively inexpensive.
A big thank you to Jason Hibbs of Bourbon Moth for the inspiration. His video on laminated work surfaces was a huge help. Thanks man!

@EverydayBuilds nicely done! This is my first but not the last of your videos I've watched. I enjoyed your humour and clear explanation! I never thought about boxing in a filing cabinet...interesting idea. I think it's great you were wearing a mask and using dust collection most of the time you were cutting mdf...that stuff is toxic. You are clearly smart and creative...definitely subscribed. I also think it's great you acknowledged who you got the idea from.

Like you I put off buying a track saw for years. Bought one last year from the money of a kitchen install. What a game changer in the shop! I can in seconds cut a straight chip free reference edge on almost anything. Last time I did some laminate for a craft table. I used the track saw to even rough cut the laminate to size. So much quicker and easier than knife and snapping. Really need to get a hose and get some dust collection set up like yours.

Good video. I use a fine notched spreader for my contact cement and throwaway pain paint brush for the edges. Also spread the glue on the plastic laminate upside down over the top of the matting surfaces first then so you don't have to worry about spills, then coat the matting surface last. I'm going to have to try the hardwood chamfer technique on my next opportunity. Also plastic laminate cuts on the table saw just fine and much much faster. You can also use a trim bit with the router to cut pieces to size. I like the track. No need for a fence.

For someone who has undiagnosed OCD, your video instantly drew me in with the high contrast bench colors. Then you kept my attention with the great shots of satisfying cuts and assembly. Great job! I've always thought about adding laminate to work benches, but have refrained due to how it wears. While the black top you added looks amazing new, you can see the wear and tear as white scratches on your assembly table. I wonder if just changing to lighter colors would hide them better. With a wood top, any wear just adds to the look. One last note, kudos to you for giving credit where credit is due regarding your inspiration. I'm sure Mr. Hibbs will see this one day and comment.

12:15 the proper scoring tool is a single pass usually. After scoring bend it so the score you just did is on the inside of the fold. This will snap the backing clean as it stretches and leave a much nicer edge and you only need to bend one way. And it's satisfying like bubble wrap when it snaps. Not truly important if you are going to do a final flush trim with a router, but if you ever need to seam two pieces together, I'd get the right tool. they are $5.00 P.S. I realized I forgot to say, awesome build. Good ideas in there. I hadn't seen the miter track and the woodpecker stops. Those are nice. Having the stop in the work surface instead of maintaining a fence (which is what I have now) is definitely an improvement in function of the overall workspace. Redesign is going on the list.

I just use the track saw on its shallowest setting to cut the laminate. It gives very clean edges and it’s pretty quick.

I subscribed to your channel because of this build and I was getting ready to replace the crappy melamine top on my mitre station. Studied what you did carefully and am now implementing it. One suggestion for going forward though. Once I have the 1/2" MDF ready for the back of the tabletop, I intend to glue/screw the back down only, put the track in place, and mark out the line for drilling the holes to secure the rail. Just thought that would be an easier way to do it than trying to keep that meter line in-between and below the two 1/2" pieces of MDF. Looking forward to having it done.

I’m about* to do the same thing in my shop - except I’m using my own custom laminate that I make. (*”About” is all relative - hopefully within the next 6 months). Great build - I’ll look into that track and cool stop system. Thanks!

Hi, Thank you very much for this video, a great bench. The instructions were very clear as well. Could you please explain your Table Saw table? I am watching a lot of youtube carpantary shows and every table looks different. When I search for Table saws on google none of them has all the bells and whistles that I see on these shows. So, it would be great if you could over that and may be a video on how you built it and your cross sled. Thank you again and best wishes.

Looks great Jordan, the only thing I would say is the laminate on your track needs to be beveled to the height of the track. That’s a catching point if you slide timber that’s slightly bowed. Nice job 👌🏻🇦🇺

If you have used office furniture outlets near you they sell them pretty cheap and sometimes you can get dinged up/bad paint items cheap if you dont mind a little body work and putting a fresh coat of the paint color of your choice on them.

Thanks for the video. I like the combination of the filing cabinets with the wood frame very much. Looks great and very handy for the day you want to move or reorganize. Also, you can get them very cheap second hand which would make the whole a lot more cost and labour effective. Can't you cut the laminate with the drop saw? Personally, I would have tried to make the edging a bit higher so the laminate is flush with the edges just to prevent chipping of the laminate on the edges. Subscribed.
