Build your own Vacuum Test Station!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Build your own vacuum test station so you can accurately test valve bodies, check balls in cases and pistons, sleeves and bushings in automatic transmissions. You can get vacuum test guides for free from www.sonnax.com. If Sonnax sells a replacement valve, they usually share a typical specification for the vacuum test. Just go to the valve and open the instructions or click on the link that says “you need this if.”
Vacuum testing has been around for many years and I’m still surprised to hear that some shops still don’t check the valve body and transmission for wear using a vacuum test stand. It’s simple and repeatable. It’s one of those tools that answers the question “could this have caused the failure.” Without it, it’s really guess work.
The following are parts found on Amazon.com that were included in this video. I’m sure you can find many, if not all, of the components at your local hardware store and auto parts store. If you have a harbor freight close to you, you can get the vacuum pump pretty cheap (especially if you have one of those 20% off coupons)!

Really good, thanks for this! I wanted to test a valve body for fun(also to properly diagnose of course). I didn’t want to spend $300 on the Sonnax set up just for this one time use. I really love these vids of yours 🤠.
Great information on all videos, I will be building this rig to test a couple of bodies with 1-2, 2-1 hard shift issues, thank you
Thanks for this, majority of the parts are available at lowes or home depot sans the gauge..for the line you can either use 1/4" irrigation line(which i already had) or they have clear 1/4 hard plastic line. Only differences are the T's and the needle valves are a 90 degree vs 180 degree. Went with 1/8 pipe thread as thats the size of the gauge i already had.
I love Sean's philosophy. Those of us doing this work are in business to make money for ourselves, not part distributors, tool manufactures and most of all, part manufacturers. Knowing what to replace, and when to replace it is very important when satisfying our customers, and pocket book. We live in tough times. I appreciate the time and effort in doing these video's for the public.
So cool! I know nothing of automotive technology. I will be using this technique to ensure my vacuum chamber is always at a desired number, so I have consistency as I explore epoxy composites. Thank you much.
Absolutely excellent!!! Love the calibrated orifice! Am a retired transmission engineer who has had valve body design. Great job!
Thank you! Need to test my AFL valve/circuit on 4l60e. This was just what I needed.
Thank you so much saved me a headache I’m chasing down a leak on my 6l80 I built it but I had the original valve body but updated sonnax valves but had a failure recently in the clutch apply lower valve body well hearing another leak so time to test
Thank you for doing this video. I would like to see more videos where the problem is shown along with the fix and finished repair.
20 years of nuts and bolts, last year molt volts and ohms all diagnostics. Phenomenal presentations, skill level off the charts, where is your school?
Awesome of course!! Thank You!!
Excellent video. This has got to be one of the most clear, concise videos I've seen on YT. All the information you need, and none of the fluff that you don't. I only just came across your channel, but it looks like I'll be sticking around.
Perfect as always 👍
Thanks for all you do! quick question...What size holes are in the test plate?
Thanks for this. I ordered the parts using the Amazon links you gave. I just happened to have a vacuum pump exactly like yours. The needle on the left that you adjust to 5 inHg is too restrictive to go below about 12inHg. Drilling it out looks problematic. I have 1/4” ordered and will adapt. I’ll let you know how it works.
thanks for the information.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, got a question about the drill bit size,it seems hard to find that size ,like to know what would be # most lively to be found.Thanks.
Great video as always, Sean!

Great video! I will save 2/3 on the vacuum tester. What size of the plastic glass test plate?
GREAT IDEA!!! i will build this rig and get some ear plugs... THANK YOU SIR!

Really well explained. Just saying.
not sure if its been mentioned but you can create templates or forms for liquid silicone. can make the seal sheet with clear silicone for about 20 cents. and as many replacements as neeeded.

Where can I find vac test pressure size for every transmission, I wanna find Toyota A245E's By the way thanks for this vid ❤️❤️
Wbere can i get the test plate kit?
awesome
Finally built the device after 2 years., and tested the first valve body. Was completely blown away by sonnax prices for the tools to fix it. DOes anyone know where can I get valve body repair service, maybe mail-in? Or maybe good reman valve bodies?

Call Streetsmart down in Florida. I've heard good things about them.
Hello please tell me what diameter of the drill was used for the calibration hole of the vacuum tester

.035" -- I use a welding tip cleaner drill bit to find a bit that small. They're pretty cheap.
can you tell me where i can get the airgun-tip on 10:31 in the video? thank you so much for this video, it's very very helpful. BR from switzerland, Matthias

That was from a generic air gun I got from NAPA. I’m pretty sure harbor freight would have something similar. Pretty sure it was from a gun like this: www.amazon.com/Milton-S-148-NPT-Lever-Blow/dp/B001XBI1E2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=2WNKXML3SAO70&keywords=air+nozzle+blow+gun&qid=1640455412&sprefix=air+no%2Caps%2C93&sr=8-3

Is vacuum test done with dry valve ..or must be oily???
@siuautomotive
2 жыл бұрын
Dry valve. A wet valve will create a false seal.
I built this and can't get adjusted? The 25 psi adjustment with finger over nozzle works then after I do 5 psi adjust then put finger over to check the 25 psi it's only 14 psi?
@siuautomotive

Hmmm I wonder if you have vacuum lines routed wrong or your trying to get the vacuum readings by turning the wrong valve.
@dsj5514

@@siuautomotive I got it thanks! I wasn’t adjusting enough work great. The valve body is bad had 7 under 16 psi. None of them that would cause the problem it was doing neutral 3-4 I think?
@Roscotech
Жыл бұрын
If you are getting neutral 3/4 on a 4l60 try looking at the servo. I helped a buddy put one together (neither one of us are pro builder) and had the same issue. One part of the band servo was upside down.
Is it possible to use a manual hand pump/gun for creating the vacuum instead of an electric pump? I guess that could save a bit of more money as well?

if you have two sets of hands and one of them is good with pumping indefinitly while the others do testing I guess this would work. Apologies to all the unsuspecting kids that get conscripted for pump duty🤣

Harbor freight has an air operated vacuum pump that I plan to try with this setup. I am guessing it might not be quite as stable but if I can regulate my compressor output well enough then it should be. Cost is only $15. Item 96677 at harbor freight.
