Build your own university - how and why. | John Roberts | TEDxBarcelonaED

Youth unemployment is high, and social engagement low. The institutions that we trust to educate our future leaders are often graduating people with irrelevant skill sets and massive debt. This talk examines a potential solution to aspects of these intractable problems - starting your own university.
John has been working in West Africa for a decade. He was a chef, when at 21 he discovered his purpose for alleviating poverty by cooking for the homeless people of Los Angeles. John went on to pursue studies in development at the American University of Paris, National University of Singapore, SciencesPo and Pepperdine. He co-founded the Open University of West Africa and Impact Hub Accra. He is a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum, a Fellow at Power of Youth and an Ambassador for the 1/000 Network.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The best part of this talk is when John told the parties interested in bringing this new education model to their own country:' Why don't you build it in your country? You're the best situated to know what is needed there(paraphrased that last part)?" We are all our own, best saviors! But very good points about updating the degree-obtaining process + expanding access to it(+education in general).

I want to build a university in my home town in KZN. To see the youth growing up in that place in below levels of poverty with no career ambition because of lack of higher institutions keeps me awake at night. I'm here searching and this what came up.

YES!!! Customized degrees. Like IEPs for kids and adults that don't have learning disabilities, but don't fit in the traditional education model. There's so many credit hours that I feel like are just going to waste on subjects that aren't going to help me achieve my goals, but are required for a "degree". I don't do well in classrooms, but I LOVE learning and applying and testing and stretching my knowledge. If I could develop a degree that would teach me what I need to know to achieve my goals, and then just continue to expand on my education as my goals expanded, and then synthesize what I've learned to teach others... the potential is exponential!

So many missed the point claiming there is no recipe or means to replicate. As a professor, this makes perfect sense to me. Some say, open edu resources already exist--correct, so why are students paying tuition to cheat through college to get a meaningless piece of paper? They don't care about learning (in general, most traditional age undergraduates do not). I could teach marketing in 1-2 years rather than 4 and the businesses hiring my students would spread the word about my graduates' skills compared to those students from accredited universities. Universities are 20 years behind and literally do not allow innovation or common sense--this applies even in business schools and colleges. So again, this makes perfect sense to me.
