Build GPTs the Right Way - 20 Custom Instructions Included

If you are trying to build a custom GPT, it’s important to use the right set of instructions.
I want to share 20 different interactions you can just copy and paste to get the best results with your GPT.
And I’ll share ton of other resources and some limitations I found, when building your own GPTs.
GPTs are basically mini ChatGPTs for a very specific use case and anyone with a ChatGPT plus account can make one. And soon, we will be able to put them in the GPT store for everyone to use and earn revenue from them.
This is the new App Store and it’s going to be very crowded. So it’s important to train your GPT the right way.
The limit for custom Instructions for GPTs are 8000 characters.
For custom knowledge based, you can upload up to 10 different files. From my early testing, the files can be 100,000 words or less.

    Quick question for anyone here: if you have quite a specific instruction (eg the "Role-Playing and Storytelling Assistant" instruction), should your knowledge files include examples of what this should look like? And thanks for the video. I've been searching for a clear explanation of how to build a Custom GPT and this has answered it!

    I got it to operate error free with 10 files also: 8 .txt files, and 2 .pdf docs. The largest document allowed was 1.490 characters (versus your experience of 100,000 words). I found that when I added more pdf docs that I got more errors. Also, by asking the creator tool I was told that that the limitation of total size was 50mb, hence save everything from Word or Google Docs in .txt.

    thank you so much, you are an expert in this field. I have a question, whey my GPTs fails to follow the following requirements. 1- Use Custom Knowledge base Always refer to my knowledge base first, before providing a response. If your answer is based on my uploaded knowledge base, provide the name of the files that your answer refer to. --- GPTs always fail to provide the name of the uploaded files that his answer refer to.

  • @Freakei

    @Freakei

    6 ай бұрын

    Because your GPT doesn't have those names. They are only used for you. I imagine even putting the name of the doc at the top of each file won't work. See, GPTs use the docs to perform a vector search based on the users query. Basically, they get the query, translate it into a vector and then check for the vector with the most semantic overlap in your documents. These documents are automatically vectorized when you upload them. So now your GPT found a part of the text that is similar to the query at line 50 of document 4. It now grabs a few of those other lines of text for context, so that it then has lines 45 to 55 to answer the query for, which is then added to its system prompt temporarily. So in all of this workflow, the actualy name of the doc never enters the system prompt for the GPT. If your documents have highly specifc topics, you could probably tell the GPT in the system prompt to say "I got this from OPTION 2" by promptging it like this "You shall always, in all cases, implement the source of your answer. I am providing you with a list of topics and what OPTIONS they refer to. Here is this list: How to drive with stick, how do I turn on the headlight --> "Driving for dummies" How do I water plants, what tools for gardening --> "Gardenining for dummies" For instance if you get a question about gardening, please implement the following into your response: "I got this from "Gardening for dummies". Again, this only works if the documents have highly specific and unique topics, so I am not sure how applicable that is to your case.

    Nice video, how would the GPT go into applying instruction 1 though?. It's not like it can decide on itself to browse info and fine-tune itself and/or grab PDFs autonoumously to expand its knowledge. Suck a task sounds doable, but probably not through custom instructions, but through a scheduled action where the GPT checks in regularly for specific data sources, grabs the text, converts it to a PDF and uploads it to its knowledge base. If that is actually doable.

    yea my assumption was that it will have that function at some point. I analyzed another one, where I found something similar and had a conversation with ChatGPT about it and it agreed that it would make a good instruction. But to your point, it won't be able to self improve at the moment.
