The most important thing to remember for beginners is to never compare your work with the box art! They are professionals that have painted for years and do it everyday as a job, there is no way your models will look like that when you start painting. Focus on choosing fun color choices and experimenting with painting techniques as you get more comfortable! Don’t feel ashamed to try something new or a color scheme that is not official! Have fun and be proud of your work! There is nothing more fulfilling then having your own work on display on a shelf or table!

@@MidwinterMinis it’s so important! So many beginners get discouraged because their miniatures don’t look perfect. Damn finally somebody who actually tells the basics and not some frickin high class art lesson. I appreciate this video a lot. Pretty much every tutorial I have seen up to now was way to advanced for an absolute beginner. "Go ahead with the airbrush" as if I have an airbrush just sitting around! Or "Use some wash" without explaining how or even what that is. And ofcourse working with 7 different pots of paint for a simple marine. This video just made my day. It gave me some real motivation to go and paint some models while giving me some more realistic outlook on what I can expect.

@@robsonez Dude I literally looked up beginner tutorials... Not advanced. If something is labeled beginner I expect it to be appropriate for beginners. Yes now almost a year and a lot of minis later this video has little to offer. But back then before painting my very first mini without knowing any basics it helped a lot! The title of this video includes "your first". This is not about improvement, it is about the very first step... the basics of basics. And it does that very well. Also what the fuck is this: "Beginner techniques are just novice method"? xD. Beginner and novice is pretty much the same... maybe the novice has painted 10 minis while the beginner is literally just beginning. Ofcourse they are the same techniques. Seriously don´t even answer... I can see you have nothing to offer in terms of arguementation and I will simply ignore it.

Novice method meaning the beginnings of the advanced skills you see on more serious tutorials. Was clearly too hard for you to understand then and now... The information in the 90s was so bad, despite practically living in the local store for a year or so I didn't once hear anyone mention that you needed to dilute paints. I was so annoyed no one covered this and only found out when a friend casually mentioned it years later. It's great people have all the resources you mention these days as it makes things far more accessible, which is likely to keep people enjoying the hobby longer.

Hey! Please read! I just re- stumbled across this video. I watched it 1 year and 9 months ago. Thank you. Thank you so very much buddy. You see, I've been wanting so bad for about 15 years to get into the hobby. Like many, I was terrified of painting. I'm no artist. Never built a model kit. I was terrified of it, and thought I would never be apart of the 40k tabletop community. Then I found this video one day after watching "play on tabletop". You made me believe that I could paint. You made it look simple. So I took the plunge. Again thank you. I've painted so much in 1 year and 9 months. I have tyranids, ultramarines, sisters, necrons, and my wife is now painting an orc army. I love how this video is somewhat targeting the younger audience of the hobby and is so open. Many "New to the hobby" videos can be speaking to the massive older crowd and as a father it's nice to see the chidlings welcomed in a non condescending way This and black magic crafts video on safety are my must watch for my boys when they take to this hobby more than just slapping layers of paint recklessly on their dad's models. Thankyou Guy!
I am 35 years old and started to get interested in Warhammer 40k - I think it was the atmosphere and lore that drew me in. Luckily I live next to a big city that has some Gameworkshop stores. So after watching this video I feel motivated to try out assembling and painting my own first models. You explaining the process so well is really motivating, even for someone who did really badly in his art classes ^^ Thank you for this cool video, I will definitely return and look over your tips once more :)
This is gold standard of beginner mini painting tutorials. Perfect selection of accessible techniques, down-to-earth encouragement, and just has that "heart" to it. On top of the beginner friendly technical advice, there's lots of good "psychological" advice going on here for how to just enjoy the hobby without worrying about things being perfect. It can be a refreshing reminder even for someone who is no longer a beginner per se.
This is the most wholesome Guy will ever be. Nothing will ever top this...until the next video where Guy goes full wholesome again without effort
I fell into a deep state of "painting fatigue" after my lattest project (knees deep in an AoS Nighthaunt army) and half-way through it just left me. First time in three years I got exhausted by the simple thought of picking up a brush. However, this video, for some reason, ignited my creativity. Just watching those steps again, the whole painting process explained, the "bread and butter of the hobby" one might call it, it made me fall back in love with painting itself. I put my army on hold, went to my nearest gaming store, got a set of boardgame minis (just a bunch of archers and hellbardiers), and I just love painting them, designing their bases and picking some easy colors schemes. I guess sometimes we can really get lost in big projects, watching amazing minis people post online and pushing ourselves more and more, instead of just grabbing a few colors or minis we find cool in the moment and paint away. Thanks a lot for bringing the joy of painting back to me with this video!

More Advice: 1)You can make a wet pallet for pretty much free with stuff you have around the house and theyll probably be better then the brand ones (search youtube and the first video that pops up should suffice) it takes 30seconds to make. 2) Plastic glue should be used in a vantilated areas, the fumes of the chemicals melting the plastic can be very harmfull or even in a place with a window if you do a lot of minis at a time or regularly, some people have felt headaches and got health problems, (not just the plastic glue but, spray primers and such materials , do be carefull) 3) The light is also important, like Guy said , not just to see what you are doing but also to take care of your eyes, youll be able to paint better and longer . Try to aim for a 5500 to 6000k led bulb (K is for kelvin and it should say that in the packaging) , lasts longer, similates day light better, and costs less in energy bills.
I know this is a very old vid now but it has given me the confidence to buy my very first warhammer set and paints! Thanks for this! This is absolutely the best and simplest warhammer model painting guide I've seen on youtube. All the other videos kind of jump between beginner to expert techniques. Everything you've shown here does not seem too daunting for a beginner.

I have a question though. if my model has two main base colors (I'm doing adeptas sororitas a beginner), what would you recommend for dry brushing? Should I do 1 set of dry brushing for black and another set for the red? or just do a 1 over with 1 main color? The unit seems to be an even mix of both.
Im 38 once many years ago I dabbled in airfix and model trains and some warhammer. Never took off and quickly moved on. But recently I have been watching and really enjoying many KZread videos about 40k and starting up painting for beginners etc.. I really want to try again and this video made me confirm that decision. With Xmas coming up im going to treat myself.
This was the most helpful painting class I've ever seen. Thank you.
For a world (universe?) that's so depressingly dark, violent, & evil, the community here is incredibly kind & helpful. I'm fairly new to the Warhammer stuff, my only exposure being video games. The nearly impenetrable lore has made it very intimidating to get into, but with how welcoming the community is, I feel comfortable looking up videos & learning about it, & hopefully collecting, building & painting my own figures. Not ready to try the table top game, but, baby steps lol
Been in the hobby for some 20 years and I still find myself watching beginner videos. not because I need them, but they are nice to watch while i paint.
Skitarii were my first models a year and a half ago so I'm so happy to see this video!
The line “The dry brushing made it look so sick” really made me proud to be English Love hearing people call things sick, doesn’t happen as much as it should
I’m back here after painting my first 15 minis. This is the best first timer paint tutorial I’ve found on all of KZread so far. Insanely helpful
Thank you so much, I gave up hobby as a teenager, the lack of money, patience and advices made me regret my mistakes instead of learning from them. I've been watching a lot of your vids and I gotta say you rekindled the flame.
THANK YOU for mentioning sub assemblies with skitarii- I respect you for painting it fully assembled but those little bastards are such a pain to paint with the legs attached.

I learned that lesson like 35 Skitarii too late.

@@Kildar042 I did too. After deciding I wanted to do the inside red. ( and after having done every single one's exterior with contrast paint)
Perfect timing on this video. It's my birthday today and I literally just got my first Warhammer set as a present. Can't wait to get them painted!
Just got my first warhammer40k model got a Sentinel bought paint with it. Happy to found your video before i end up making big mistakes.
I just want to say Thankyou for making this tutorial. Of all Mechanicus paint guide I've watch, Yours is the final one that made me decide to go painting. Right now my First Metalica Skitarii Ranger is almost finish (need some wash and waiting for custom decal to deliver) and its already look incredible.
Hi! I have found a really handy tip for painting robes of the kind of your skitarii instead of sub-assembling them is to blue-tack the miniature to the base. To access any tricky bits, just remove it and then stick it back. This might not work well with applying sand/texture paint before priming though, but I usually use GW's cityfight bases or basing paints, so I always apply them after painting. Anyway, your videos are very good, keep it up!
This is such a great video. I'll be showing my daughter's.
As someone just looking into starting a 40k collection videos like these are really useful. Well done. Thanks.
What I like about this video is the small details. Those tips in between are not mentioned in other tutorials and it answers all the questions I had. Great video.
I genuinely like washing metals in like an Engine or in a greasier sort of environment in Agrax. It makes it feel heated and covered in oils to prevent rust.
Yeah, finally some admech love! Thanks for the upload today Guy

Beep beep boop. Thankful statement gratefully received. Beep.
Great tutorial. Nice seeing everything needed for not just the painting but taking out and assembling the models. Great to see some other beginners first try at painting too so it's not just someone who's already painting for a while.
I just bought my first set and some basic tools and this video just boosted my confidence I cant wait for my stuff to come in!
Your nieces did a fantastic job. These models look like they just walked off the battle field.
Looking healthy mate

Thank you!
Thank you so much. This beginner's guide is excellent! The wash/shade on my miniature has totally been a game changer.
I watched this to the paint my green tide and man, this video captures everything there is too it. Thank you.
Let's all remember the most important detail, thin our paints and two thin coats. All Hail Duncan!
Me: Looks at the finished Necron Also me: I see what you did there
I just started in Warhammer and this is by far the best video I've seen to learn the painting process!
Very nice introduction lesson. I have painted for years and this video covers very well all the basics and more.
We put it together and paint war things, it's who we are!
8:59 "Why would you do this to me, father"
Great video. Straight to the point. I didn't get your life story first. I love that you did everything with brushes and no airbrush.
I am returning to miniature painting after almost 25 years. I was absolutely obsessed with them for most of my childhood my main armies were Imperial guard and ORc (both 40k and the old world) - I am absolutely LOVING your videos, from the fact that you score them yourselves to the emphasis on “speed painting” - thanks for all you are doing and have done - I am completely inspired :D
