Build an Awning Frame from Wood - Workshop Renovation Series
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Build a wall mounted awning frame with a steel roof attached to the side wall of a workshop. I built the awning frame from standard framing lumber, primed, and painted them with exterior enamel paint, then attached them to the wall with GRK structural washer head screws. This is an easy DIY project to create a covered space on the side of any building with a frame from wood. This is part 5 of my workshop renovation series.

As an old retired cabinetmaker it is so refreshing to see someone do work with some finesse. Well done.
Probably the best Ryan’s kzread.infoUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans on building a shed is hardly ever found. And Ryan takes the mystery out of different types of foundation options, etc. He even shows how to build a shed with different designs. Very comprehensive, covering different roofing materials, siding, etc.

A precision craftsman executing his skills.........! Thanks for sharing your many talents with us. Your teaching / coaching skills are unsurpassed....
Thank you so much for this! I'm adding a small awning to a backyard shed and this is exactly what I was looking for to help me decide what I need. Your attention to detail and clear explanation of the steps is far, far above average for this kind of video. Very much appreciated!
AWESOME VIDEO!!! THIS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Perfect for what I want to do on my garage turned studio apt. entryway. Simple, clear instructions and a diagram to boot. Thank you.
Fantastic! Thanks so much. I've been trying to find a way to cover both ends of our screened in porch when it rains. This fits it to the t'. I've got some leftover metal roofing and they will fit nicely. Thanks for not having blaring music playing during instruction. Can't wait to download the instructions. Have a great day!
Brilliant design. Brilliant process. Brilliant teaching. Thank you!
Your whole process is inspiring. Love the dedication to detail in all regards such as the design phase, planning, and finally construction and assembly. It is motivating for sure

I loved this video. Small victories big reward. I am thinking about making an awning for our back door and also, recently learned about flashings. I think is the right word you said. The instruction was excellent. Lumber is crazy. Like you, I use what I have and recently made a shelf and prep top bench outta raw cedar because one, I love raw cedar and two, it's what I had on hand. Even without the cost, there is something for me that I truly love about using up what I have. That said, I also like getting new wood too. I have a trip coming up as a reward to buy more raw cedar once I finish a current project. Anyway, longest comment in the history of ever. Thank you for this video. Cheers, Ivy.
Outstanding Videos! Logical, frugal, complete sufficient to duplicate the work. Excellent camera work, drawings and pleasant narration. Thank you for your instruction and creative solutions.

Very nice job. I like the shape of the plywood spacers you used to center the brace and rafter on each frame. Small victories are always the best because they add up to a good job. Thank you for sharing and have a good week ahead.

I'm getting ready to build a 10' x 4' awning on the front of my shop. It'll cover my '5' double doors and a window on each side. I think I'll just copy your 50/20 degree angles...looks REALLY SHARP!!
That looks great. I'm adding one this summer and I hope it comes out as nice.

Very interesting that I found this video of yours after I’ve already designed my six pieces for my awning that will end up being 58 inches in length it was so cool to watch you put this together and I love your rain water catchment system. I think I’m going to want to learn more about that! Thank you for doing this. It was really precise specific and just really cool- love the cat!🐈⬛😉

It looks excellent and well planned out! I suspect that some people will comment about the placement of the roofing screws in the valleys rather than the ridges. The thought is that the rubber washers eventually degrade and the lower spots in the roof are more likely to have water flow leading to more potential for leakage. Personally, I don’t think that’s an issue here at all, especially given that it is an awning and not an enclosed structure. I also love those GRKs. Nice work!
@MANaboutTOOLS

Thanks! After reading many thoughts on the roofing screw location I believe the best location is on the flats. On the ridges will distort the metal when torqued. And, the rubber will degrade over time in both cases.
Awesome work and presentation. Love the simplicity of this idea. I need an awning over my garage man door, and this may be the ticket. You just earned a new sub.

Nice work. I'm sure you were expecting this comment so I'll go for it: now you need an gutter on the awning to collect the extra rain for the big water tank :) Yay, Kitty spotted!
Very professional! As luck would have it - I have hundreds of extra 2" x 4" x 95 5/8" studs in a big stack from cancelled project. I will rip these studs down the center on my table saw to get 2 nearly 3/4" (1 x 4) pieces I will use as slats to support my metal roof. I like how you showed angles, how many pieces you could get per stud, and even your screw angles. The way you painted that wood beforehand was highly efficient, keeping your from having to awkwardly paint things later on in that confined space you described. But how did you find the stud locations of your exterior wall? My structure is a 2-car garage with cinder block walls. I will will make pilot holes through my angle braces, start to drill through onto my block, so I can see where the holes line up, switch to masonry bits and through-drill. I will gently hammer expansion collars into these holes, then go back and use Tapcon screws through my braces using nutdriver bit. These hold an incredible amount of weight which allows me to space 32" O.C. This then saves me more material! I'm also adding heavy duty roofing felt under the metal roofing material as an added precaution in case any water gets under the metal roof.
Wonderful project, very well executed. I'm going to be cheeky here and ask you, how much was the total cost? Thanks for making the video and for taking the time to upload.

Very good work, I especially like the way you assembled everything in your workshop first. I have a question. Did you give any thought to rainwater runoff and gutter attachment?
@MANaboutTOOLS
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didn't consider a gutter as there would be very little runoff in my situation. But, it would be pretty simple to add one. Thx, Kent
Nice work!…love the computer generated animations. What program would you recommend for someone just getting into making drawings?
Very nice work. Would it be the same structurally to drill the pocket holes for the brace and rafter connection in the brace vs the rafter?. Less worry for water intrusion.
Nice cuts with mitre saw. What about some information about making the joint waterproof from your awning to the wall? Waterproofing it so it will last 20,30 years.
Great video! Quick question can I use 2x3? How can I modify this for a door awning? Or maybe this would be a good suggestion for a video on building a door awning! Thanks for your help!
Need to build this over a 6ft patio door. How could I design it with such a long span?
How far out can you exsend without any Metal support with metal beams
Thank you for the excellent video. Painting the frames would have been easier if you painted the 8 foot lengths before cutting them. That would have eliminated the detailed "cutting in" paint work.
