Thanks Jeff. Always enjoy your talks on boats and all the interesting side bar notes on the history of these boats and personal anecdotes. I agree the 27 footer with the cabin console is a great design. Real nice match of aesthetics and functionality. Striped Mullet was an important fishery in North Carolina back in the day. I remember my grandfather would buy roe mullet every Friday when they were in season at the local community store in rural North Carolina. Been a long time since I ate fried mullet roe but I remember it well.

Hey Jeff, something that might help your budget minded builders with box store lumber.. instead of trying to find a perfect 2x4 that’s clear and straight .. get a 2x10 that doesn’t have the center ring on the end grain and rip it lengthwise and remove the center 2.5” and what’s left is 2 2x4s that are almost perfect quatersawn boards that in my experience are more stable and less prone to bowing and twisting

Worth noting is that due to lumber grading procedures, the longer andwider the plank gets, the fewer defects it's allowed to have. So if you can get 2x12 stock, buy it as long as you can get it. When you rip out the heart, what's left will be some pretty decent stock.

Grew up in Florida and graduated HS, in Cedar Key Florida, the boats are called Bird Dog Mullet Skiffs, they still use them today around the Gulf coast, they would be hand built so they could run in very shallow water, flat bottom and light, put foam in the bottom and glass them over and "wouldn't sink", any where from 20 -35ft. Tremblay Boats was the well known Boat builder back then, actually met the origional builder before he died. Some of them were built with the open stern to drag the nets in better.

I have been torn with what kind of boat to build. I like this boat on this video. The last boat was awesome! Im not a wealthy man so even where to store it is a challenge. Thought of a kayak but what fun is that, I need a motor to go to where I want to go. But this (27 foot was it?) Skiff was as close to what I want to have. Thanks for sharing, Patrick

The Harry Sucher V-Bottom boat book he cited in the beginning is a much more important book than people realize. It really needs to be re-printed as they are scarce and expensive.

Fast boats in the 1930's absolutely WERE planing hulls. They were planing hulls back in the 1920's in fact. It was in the late10's and early teens that planing hulls became widely used.

If you were to power the Chubasco with an outboard, would it be best to mount it via a motor-well inboard, or hang it on the transom?

I'd put it on the transom. The only time you should use a well is if you are planning to commercial fish with nets off the transom. Please see this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nn6i1dOFdr2YmbQ.html

@@tjkid07 Thank you sir. Just wasn't sure if it could handle all the weight back there since I think the 27 is designed around an inboard installed mid-ship? Didn't know how moving all that weight back aft would affect balance with all that rocker.

@@mikek2218 Many people discuss weight and balance like this is a small airplane with only 3 or 4 inches of allowable shift. It is noting like that. You have a 3000 lb boat that carries another 3000 lbs of fuel, people, gear, water, adult beverages and so on. Now the diesel is 500 lbs or more in the center, a typical outboard is maybe 300. Like a fat guy standing in the back of the deck. Think it will ruin a 27 foot boat's balance if one guy walks from the cabin to the transom? Maybe a 12' kayak, but not in this boat.

I know many designer/builders really get worked up about changing anything specified in their design, especially when you start moving weight around, and I can understand that. Just didn't know, from looking at your study plans, about the sensitivity of shifting weight on the 27, given the weight bearing surface aft is not as much as a traditional planing hull design.

Sadly, Jeff Spira died over a year ago and his website is defunct. None of his boat plans seem to be available anymore.

Jeff, what kind of speed would the Chubasco get with 100hp? I'd be happy with 12 knots but I'm not sure she'll do it.

I'm sure it will get into the low teens with 100 horses. I think so with a 75 as well.

Easy ToBuildBoats do the plans for the chubasco come with versions for outboard on the transom, and in a well? I would want to see bth before deciding but think I want transom mounted...

@@Rick_Sanchez_C137_ It only comes as an inboard. I' give you instructions for converting the transom in the Ply-on-Frame manual. If you wanted a well, that would be on you. I see no reason for a well on this boat when you can transom mount.

if you were going to take a 20 footer lake boat hull and make her into a month long excursion boat , what would you do and why?

It depends on a lot. How many people, how much load, how economical, what speeds do you plan on going, how deep/shallow, what kind of weather, the list of potential questions goes on and on. What do YOU want to do with it, besides go on a month long excursion?
