    Very cool project. I bet if you shortened the threaded rod and reduced the air gap you could really get that thing moving.

    I miss Radio Shack... 😢 I altered my electric guitar so many times with parts from there. Up to this day, nobody knows how it sounds so clean. That's when I was a middle schooler. Can't imagine what I'd be able pull of nowadays. Electronic stores can be a bit pricey; but, i have no other choice

    i would suggest wrapping over 200 wraps on each side.. with .22 guage wire.... wrap more with thinner wire.

    what is wrapped around the 1/2 inch pipe to place the commutator on? and how do you attach the commutator onto that?

    Just electrical tape to widen a bit. I used super glue to attach it.

    Sayton Dette you can order it, it is called "magnet wire" or "Enameled wire* and it is made for winding coils

    I have always wanted to build on of these. but I was never sure how to wind the copper. Is there only one way to wind it? You use 1 long piece of wire, don't you? and then you keep winding say, clockwise all the way up the bolt?

    Yeah I can definitely see this taking a week to do. With my students, all the materials are ready for them. I think retrieving the materials is half the work. I hope you got it working. I feel like its beneficial to build motors by hand - than looking at a powerpoint about it.

    Would a flywheel help on this motor? I did make mine, got it running and everything, but it stops sometimes since the rotation is not smooth. It can even lift some weight.. yey! lol

    Nice one! A flywheel might help but what sort of voltage are you running - at least 5V i would think. You could mess around with the position of the commutator.- This might help. Glad you got something running.

    +Tim Callinan Was running it at 10V and 2,2A. 2,6A when the commutators shortened out for a second. Might try to build a new one with 3 armature ends and a flywheel. And thanks for the video, it did help me out a lot with my project.

    put over 200 wraps on each side of the bolt, if you cut corners & skipm on winding , it will cause problems.. good luck

    Weaselskey probably the angle of your conductors and how they interact violently agaisnt each other, repositioning will do

    its a common problem with DC brushes... the better the contact to commutator, the less sparks...

    Where did you buy the wire and threaded rod, and does the armature (threaded rod) have to be a conducter

    The wire can be bought from www.mcmaster.com - it is just normal magnet wire. The threaded rod is made from steel - the important thing is that it is ferrous (magnetic) it should stick to a magnet.

    any hardware store , such as lowes, should have the " all-threaded rod" and the copper pipe plumbing straps ( commutator )..

    Would this work with a normal battery? 9v or 1.5 in series for example... I need a quick answer, would be really grateful! We have to make an electromotor for our school, it has to run for 1 minute and run from a battery.

    Should work with 9v I would built a smaller dc motor. There are loads of designs out there. This is a bit more difficult

    You put the nuts on either side first - tighten them and then start winding the magnetic wire.

    I have 32 gauge magnet wire, I am getting no current to my coils but commutator is sparking on turn. Is the wire too small? Should I just rewind it?

    I would guess the insulation needs to be burned off the magnet wire

    @@rogerhornsby8180 you have to really pay attention to the direction you are winding your coils. If you started clockwise then it must be clockwise throughout both sides of your core. My problem was that when I finished one side, I flipped to the other and kept winding clockwise, but since I flipped sides, it actually make the other end counter clockwise so the polarity never changed to keep the motor moving. I'm not sure if that made sense, but let me know and I can try to explain again.
