People say this so much. But for the McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron, they are genuienly ahead of their time. 243 mph out of a 618 hp NA V12 is genuienly baffling and the fan technology. As well as the 2.43s 0-60 from the Veyron in the 2000s.

407 km/h... 407 km/h. I can't even imagine how it must be sitting in that car. When the speed of a passenger plane right before take off is around 230-250 km/h.

Would like to try that for myself. Never driven any faster than 280km/h and at the time i thought that was pretty damn fast.. Pushing that Veyron to it's topspeed would break my "record" with more than 120km/h.... I mean, would i even dare to keep pushing above 300-350km/h?

@@spdcrzy This video was my first glimpse of top gear. Till that point I thought motor week type reviews of pontiac aztecs were the only car based tv program. It astounded me. This also came at an extremely bad time in my life and I give top gear great credit for getting me through it. I had something to look forward to. I came here to reminisce after I just watched the final episode of the grand tour and while I'm very sad, I know they are making the right call. Great run boys and thanks. A lot.

Geez, the cinematography is so beautiful. It was always fresh, crisp, and representative of the cars they praised.

This is a really well-done piece - cinematography, sound engineering, editing and music are all superb. Does justice to the event it's covering.

I remember watching this when it was first released. Just a really awesome piece of production here. There will never be another Top Gear.

This car was so ahead of its time.

actually it is way behind... the fuel in the tank lasts for 12 minutes (at that speed), come on.... I grant you that it was a remarkable feat of engineering (so was the nuclear bombs which destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki)... but it was used on something you simply cannot use very often (or not at all) as a normal human being without 1. crash and die or 2. pay even more money for your speeding tickets (or in some countries, get your car taken away from you and go to jail)... it is an anachronism in my point of view, in a time where everyone is looking for a way to reduce CO2 emissions...

@@antonlarm8178 I never said it is weird.. it is stupid to build a car which can go so fast that 1. its tyres will only last 20 minutes at topspeed 2. the fuel will only last 12 minutes at topspeed and 3. the topspeed can only be reached safely on a sealed off several miles long straight track... this car is in my opinion ugly, and it offers nothing but speed which even those who can afford to buy this damn thing will hardly ever achieve... and that at a price of 1.3 mill Euros...

First of all it is a 16 year old car and at that time no other car was even close to the deliever the performance the Veyron did. You dont have to like it but supercars are supposed to deliever insane power and the Veyron destroyed everyone else...so it did what it was supposed to do, and for doing that according to you it was "way behind"? wut?? It is not weird that tires dont last long at that speed, they dont last long for a Ferrari/lambo/whatever at their top speed either, it is just physics. It is a stupid car because physics dont allow tires or fuel to last long at super high speeds??? Sounds like you just dislike supercars and not the Veyron in particular

What’s insane about this car is that it weighs over 4000 lbs and has 987 hp, and still manages 253 mph. It’s quite evident that countless hours and ideas of engineering went into all the other aspects of the car that enabled it to propel itself to that number.

That moment of silence at 407 is one of the best edits i ever have seen. Pure epic.

THIS was the very first time I was introduced to the wonderful, wacky, world of Top Gear! 2005. I, finally got BBC America on my cable system. Saw Capt. Slow do his lap. Found out more of the show! And ... I've been a fan of the 3 blokes since 05.

Here is my answer to everyone who has said this in a comment before: True, but you do realize you're actually saying the same about the LaFerrari, Mclaren P1 and Porsche 918, right? (The 918 costs less, but in a way, it still counts) And if everyone made such a big deal out of this from the start, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Veyrons and all the great supercars will be non-existent today, because what's the point? Just simply buy a Supra, modify it and take it to the track, all for a reasonable price. The reason why they are so expensive is because they are the pinnacles of automotive engineering and design. A lot of effort was put into making these incredible machines. So be grateful we have cars like the Veyron and its cousins, for they are one of a kind, and we may never see their likes again in a few years' time.

Yeah, supras break in 2 weeks, but these kind of cars require constant maintenance too. If you let the cars sit for 2 weeks, the battery dies, and so do the electrical components of the car, You constantly have to use them, or recharge the batteries for example. Tires cost on this car 30.000 USD, and at every fourth set you pay 120k extra, to change the rims too.... Dont forget the annual maintenance (thats if nothing breaks), thats 30k + add an oil change (which even regular cars need at least once a year) thats another 20k. So yeah, supras break, but even from just changing a set of tires a year + maintenance + oil change, you can buy and tune another supra that makes 1000hp, if the first breaks.... :))

The thing about those hypercars is that their feel, performance and handling are extremely refined, and you can actually daily them to some extent, and even some like the Veyron/Chiron are comfortable enough to the point that they're pretty much 1000HP+ grand tourers. A 1000HP Supra doesn't have that level of refinement - I'm sure you'll have a lot of turbo lag, and on track they'll be destroyed by those hypercars unless you're running time attack aero or something.

It's 5 miles long... If he's in the middle then it's 2.5 miles. You can't see the curvature in that distance.

The most amazing thing about the Bugatti IMO is not it's speed, but how quiet and confident it seems at speed, like an airplane.

Fastest I've ever gone is 100mph, a few times in my 1.4 fiesta and a few times in the work transit

Still my favorite video on the internet to this day, 14 years later. First saw it on Google Video platform in 2006 when it was filmed.

Arguably the most famous car Top Gear ever tested

The content BBC was producing with these 3 crazy dudes was even more crazier and ahead of the time than the actual car in terms of production quality and the epic and super funny moments. Good and simpler times.

This has always been a truly beautiful piece of filmmaking. As perfect as the Bugatti itself.

God, I love this. The editing, the effects, the drama, the music! And when James gets that phenomenal car to its top speed - in those moments of near silence - it's genuinely one of the most exhilarating moments of television I've ever seen. Still is, every time I watch it. And it had to Captain Slow. That's what makes it perfection.

This is one the best documentary videos that top gear has ever done!!!😎👍The passion and enthusiasm are beyond the norm! James got emotional in the end, and so should anyone!

and now just imagine that the world's fastest bird can reach almost the same speed !

The fast you go Mother Nature makes it harder for you go faster. Going to the speed of light takes an unlimited amount of energy and unlimited amount of time. “155 mph you only need 270 horsepower engine. But to go only 70mph more you need an extra 730 horsepower” I like it the way he put it pure science !

407 to 490 km/hr wowow

A magic and very memorable moment in my life. My friend and I couldn't grasp what actually was happening. Pure insane over the top speed.

I remember watching this as a kid. Now, I am an adult, and it brings me cry. How great this show used to be, how magical this moment was, and the moment I realized this will never be back

This gave me the chills back then, stills does even today. Can't believe it's been 12 years...

People underrate the Veyron so much. If you look at onboard videos of other top speed runs from a Koenigsegg or Hennessey Venom, every single one of them is full of wind noise and unstable cars. Where as the Veyron is extremely stable and it looks like it is "only" going about 100mph. The Veyron is the most groundbreaking car in the last 50 years

I was 17 years old when I first watched this Video back in 2009,now 32 years old, am still as captivated now as a was then, the Bugatti Veyron is truly a master piece.

Just think. Just think the sweat, tears and blood shed by all those involved in the project of building of this exquisite piece of mechanical Art. All those long hours and overtime just to get this beauty out the manufacturing plant. All that hard work paid off in one instant. Truly I admit, human ingenuity is the most amazing trait that separates us from the other primates. Super cars are evolving FAST. I remember when Mclaren held the title for YEARS, same goes for Bugatti. Today, cars hold their records for months or even days. If someone isn't breaking the record they're about to. Here it's 253 MPH for a production car and today 10 years later we're at 277. What's next? 300? 400??? When does it stop and for what purpose do we continue? Because we can!

This Jeremiah and I will like 2 say that my favorite is the Koenigsegg Agera One to one it a top speed of 280 miles an hour but driving back the opposite way it did 278. 9 miles an hour the Bugatti Chiron did his thing of achievement 304. 77miles. Just know one, thing don't forget about don't forget about the Koenigsegg oh they do have something up their sleeve because both cars they did say can reach 300 miles an hour but they not trying to let it do it because it'll blow the tires and also because of the friction in the heat from the ground.
