As someone who’s been to group therapy, if everyone had laughed at my problems I would’ve left immediately, they literally said the only rule was don’t laugh. From the beginning she’s pressured to open up about her problems instead of being given a moment to feel secure by the group.

jasmine, THANK YOU for such a thoughtful comment. Here's our opinion, and it's just our opinion. We think laughter is actually the best thing in the world. In real life, friends do laugh at each other. Watch Citronella finally smile - for the very first time - after enduring the big laugh. She realizes: her problem is not "embarrassing", nor is it "shameful - and it actually IS funny! And, she is NOT fragile - at all. And she's is now in a group - a community. That's our intention - I"m writing this because your comment was so sincere. If you like the film, and want to see an Episode 2, please share it!!! M&M aka "Dragonfly Couple". 🤩😍

@@bugtherapymovie To be honest I don't think that laughter can be good for some situations, Laughter can be made into a weapon to belittle someone or their misfortune. And how it was used in this situation a therapy group where people might not be at their best mentally or physically, it's not a moment where someone would be happy or be able to process their problems as little things ( realistic someone would be ashamed in that situation, and when you have human coded characters it matters to capture real human emotions in situations like this) and, well, she went to a therapy group where people go process in a safe place, and this short I wouldn't call it a therapy group more like a comedy stage where other bugs make fun of other bugs problems that real human have in real life( except the leaf dog ). Also if you would have watched it she wasn't smiling because "OH I have realized my problems are not bad" She was embarrassed, I know that by the way her jaw is stiff and more forced to smile and the sound of her tone at that moment. ( it's a natural way to react when someone is embarrassed or shamed) To be honest, when people who have gone to therapy groups go into the comments to give criticism, it's not a good sign for your storytelling nonetheless for a very sensitive subject like mental health, addiction, and fear that can affect people's lifestyle and health.

@Alvaro Carrasco I know it's a joke and I'm not trying to say you can't joke about these things but the way you execute it matters and how you build up to it and what context, the joke in this context goes against what the short was trying to say ( you can see in the description ) that it's okay to get help if you're struggling but the way they execute the joke and when they joked about the misquotes issue makes it so the message is now that you shouldn't get help or you get laughed at. That's the issue that I'm having here it feels like the storytelling and the comedy are not helping each other to say something that they wanted to say. but also how the issue is made more into a joke, ( and into crazy people which I think a lot of people who struggle with the issue shown here wouldn't want to be seen as a crazy joke )than an issue they struggle with. The only reason I am having issues is just the mixed messages here I'm getting.

While I appreciate the simple message of the short film, I think they could have spent more time developing a story about each of the characters. It felt as though they barely scratched the surface of each of the bug's problems. The group as a whole rejected Citronella and her issues. Dr. Phil preached about being accepting, and he laughed at her problems with the rest of the group. Even at the end when everyone was squashed, Dr. Phil's character was like "I guess we can take you in now." Like what? Where's the sense of community? I like the concept and I was excited about this short film, but was left disappointed. That being said, happy mental health awareness month

@@bugtherapymovie I don't think this short does a good job at conveying that. It's mocking all the characters, but not in a way that makes their problems feel human. It makes them flat, 1 dimensional. Like each one of them is just a gag, with the only real important character being the mosquito, that gets mocked when finally opening up, which at her state, especially not with how it has been built up in this short, is more hurtful then strengthening. They build it up that the one rule is - no laughing at eachother's problems. And then when they laugh at her they all get hurt, showing us the audience they were all, including the therapist, just a bunch of assholes in the first place. And that the mosquito should just live on her own with her own problems. As soon as she opens up, her whole shtick becomes a joke too. You didn't show that humor can be a coping mechanism to realize your problems are managable, you showed the problems as stupid. You want to actually make a good show about group therapy? Go see what an actual person struggling with basically anything looks like. Especially in early stages, these groups are supposed to be an accepting and safe space. And in real life, a lot of people struggling in the ways shown in this short are not that one dimensional, and might even be very sweet and emotionally intelligent because they had to due to what they're dealing with.

As someone who goes to therapy myself and is scared to talk about my negative feelings, I'm a bit disappointed with this short. Putting aside the fact that Dr.Phil is problematic, the message at the end was delivered poorly. Them laughing at her for being scared of blood just threw the message of this being a safe space right out the window. I know the way the characters are was met to be "comedic", but it doesn't sit right with me, a few of them feel like stereotypes. And why was it implied that the main character joined them at the end even though ALL of them laughed at her. Overall, beautiful animation, poor message.

As a non-therapist who often helps people with their problems, anyway, I hope you find a safe space where you feel okay talking about things. It's incredibly important. I always make a point to never laugh at people, no matter how ridiculous their problems sound. A lot of the time, they're actually really reasonable, and a lot of people have similar issues. People just need a sobering dose of reality to see that.

@@bugtherapymovie If you want sincere and thoughtful comments, then I hope you'll read this in its entirety. Because I do like the idea of the short film, and the animation was great. But I want you to take the advice given into consideration so that hopefully, your next projects can be better, and make everyone happy. I can see the intent behind this short film, and I don't think it was a bad idea. Of course it's important to be able to laugh about problems with your friends, and laugh at yourself. And it's equally important to not be ashamed that you aren't okay or need help, no matter how ridiculous your problem feels. But the key difference here is they aren't making jokes or laughing with her. They're just making fun of her and making her feel bad. Almost everyone I've met would feel discouraged after that, not uplifted. They're all just making fun of each other. If it helps to clarify the difference, I'll use myself as an example. I suffer with OCD. I wash my hands too much, and I won't touch most things, and I use a long-sleeved shirt to navigate the world. Some things about this are ridiculous. I know that I often overreact, and frankly, a lot of things about my issues can also be really funny. Me and my brother joke about how I'm scared of cooties, or how I'm going to take three days in the bathroom because I wash my hands so long. We once saw a car with a mobile home attached on the way to the store, and joked about how their version of me was still in the bathroom, so they just brought the whole home with. On the flip side, my grandmother, at seeing my discomfort, said maybe she would just touch my shoulder or things like that sometimes so I could get used to it. Good intentions, poor execution, because that wouldn't help. Touching me without my consent would never be okay. It would make things worse, because it'd be awful and uncomfortable and give me bad associations, which would only compound the problem. (Same as the poor fly gets.) I've also had people tell me flat out my problems are ridiculous, that I should "just stop", that it's stupid or ridiculous to be afraid of, that I shouldn't worry about germs because they're on and in me all the time, that I'm faking it for attention/special treatment, joke about touching me or my things (which feels extremely uncomfortable, because the very idea causes distress), or try to point out ways in which my logic is hypocritical. Even if they think it's funny and laugh about it, it doesn't make me feel any better. It makes me feel worse. It makes me feel like I'm just being stupid, bad, wrong, ridiculous, etc. It makes me feel worthless, because I can't deal with these stupid, tiny problems that I shouldn't be having. It makes me feel there's no point. That I should die. I've actively considered it at my lowest points. If I was in Citronella's place, I probably would have given up then and there, and went to cry in a corner. Because all my problem is worth is being the butt of a joke. Great, totally makes me feel valued. /s If I were in the fly's place, I probably would have just started crying the moment the other bug touched me. I would have felt invalidated, because they weren't taking my problem seriously. Again, all I was worth was being the butt of a joke. And to be entirely clear, the other side of the line can be bad, too. There's a range of respecting and helping with a problem, and then there's the range of enabling. If my family just did everything for me because I have issues touching things, it would only feed into the problem. On some level, you have to recognize that it's bad and needs to stop. If you want one of my favorite examples of laughing at problems, I'd suggest watching the video "Does this make my Asperger's look big?" Because the writer is in the in group, so he's more than experienced with these problems, and can make educated, thoughtful remarks, and funny, relatable jokes. All in all, it was a cute, well-made animation. And I want to like it. But the way they all just make fun of each other, like all they're worth is being the butt of jokes, rubs me the wrong way, and just leaves me feeling uncomfortable. Good intentions, but it seems you could have benefited from asking those who struggle with these issues for advice. We often feel worthless and insecure, so being laughed at by strangers feels bad. I hope you'll listen and take these things into account in the future, because you guys have great potential. I'd love to see more films from you. But if you fail to learn from the issues presented here, I can't imagine they'll make it very far, because it will upset precisely the group it's supposed to appeal to.

@@jeweleitri4111 , Thanks. (I did read your whole comment. I hear ya. We hear ya. Hmmm... We will be sure to watch out for that. It's interesting stuff. We wanted the bugs to instantly get slapped down by karma (the wine glass coming down), so we know in our hearts, it was not cool to all laugh at her -- and yet, and I say, and yet, meaning, we really think this is big: She is not just okay after being laughed at, she is stronger. I know that might not make sense to you, but that's been my life experience: fearing ridicule -- and then after it comes, realizing... I'm okay! Now, that said, it never occurred to me that the Fly (Jay Leno) would mind being touched by Female Dragonfly (aside from the extent to which that would bother anyone, right?). So, that's interesting! We do not pretend to be experts... we're closer to patients, honestly.... So, thanks for giving us something to think about! The feature script is already written, and Citronella has an AMAZING arc from doing anything to avoid therapy to eventually leading the group to save Dr. Pill from a bat.. and she does this by realizing (post epiphany) that eveyrone's "weakness" is actually a strength - almost a super power, as bugs go -- I bet you would love it! I feel like this film could have benefitted immensely from a Sensitivity Reader or two early on, I feel like that’s all it could’ve taken. For a short film about group therapy, psychological issues and acceptance, it’s coincidently very cynical to the point of being dismissive and even discriminatory lol. To me, it’s not at all a portrayal of real mental illnesses or struggles- virtually everyone who attends the therapy is portrayed as a delusional caricature to the point of looking stupid- and is so unforgiving about its one-note characters that one is literally killed off for a laugh and no further reaction despite technically being one of the friendlier characters to the protagonist. Plus I get the protagonist saying “ew” to the spider and fly was intended to reference human feelings about the irl bugs, but it felt kinda messed up considering they’re both all anthropomorphic bugs and implied to be mentally ill lol. To top it off, it’s unfortunate that all the short seems to hinge on is Dr. Phil’s bug self-insert and then building around it. I think the animators and modelers did a solid job, though. Sorry to critique the writing so hard, but I was like… Damn 😞💔

And on the part of being discriminatory towards certain mental illnesses, I have a couple that where shown in this film, and I don’t feel any sort of way about it. If this is turned into a full movie, *those other bugs better get their act together, cause making fun of someone's fear and laughing at it, even when you said this place is a safe space ain't okay.* If I told someone "hey I have a fear of snakes" in group therapy, and they started to laugh at me, I'd want to leave too. This entire short sums up every fear I had about group therapy, but the thing is instead of showing that it isn't like that, it just confirms the fears someone might have about it, which not only discourages someone from seeking help and finding a community of people who uplift them, but also just makes it feel like a waste of something that could've been a very powerful and validating message. If they had started laughing, but as Citronella was going to walk away, said "That's all you were afraid to tell us about? None of us were gonna judge you for that!", and reminded her that her feelings are valid, and her phobia is valid, it would've been so much better. Really hope you guys fix this, because laughing at someone's trauma and emotions doesn't help them get better. I joke about my issues all the time with friends, but they don't laugh because they think my issues are stupid, they laugh because they understand how I feel and can relate to it. Friends who laugh at your issues solely to invalidate them are jerks. - sincerely, someone who went to group therapy!

Ya. These people have clearly never seen a therapist or dealt with trauma. Real group therapy is the opposite of this crap and this show will only scare people off of getting help, just as you expressed. As someone who has worked with many real therapist, clients, and group therapy patients: and group therapy run like this would see the therapist leading the group being reported and probably having their license taken away. It is extremely innapropriate.

Tbh I like the animation, it's very fluid and the lighting is very good. I'm not so big on the uncanny designs but my BIGGEST issue is the way the characters reacted to the mosquito's problem, I know it was for comedic effect and all that, but it's not a very good message to send to people who are afraid of going to therapy possibly for that reason. I feel that it would also have been better if the mosquito was forced at the sight of blood instead of admitting it aloud possibly by the crow tipping the bottle of whine and having to talk about her problems realizing that if she talked about them she would be able to resolve them better instead of suppressing them.

Same! I thought it was a lovely short film, but I couldn't figure out what message it was trying to give. As someone who is afraid of the thought of group therapy and talking about my own flaws in a social setting, I honestly don't this short film succeeded in sharing a (at least from what I was able to understand) clear message. I still think it was a good short film, and I could have just been looking at it the wrong way, but that's just my take on it

@@Rat2OnKZread I couldn't agree more! I do like the intention I feel that there was definitely some effort in portraying a good message. I also didn't like how the therapist was a getting inpatient with the mosquito like telling her to tell her issue in an exhausted manner. That's one of the many reasons why I don't like group therapy is that I feel peer pressured in sharing my secrets. Trust comes with patience and time. It takes time to get to know someone.

dragonslayer, Thank you for your thoughtful comment! We wrote this, and our feeling is that Citronella is far stronger than she realizes. She is not fragile. She is not weak. Does she fear being laughed at? Of course. But, that fear traps her in solitude, embarrassment and shame. Once she reveals her problem (which IS funny - sorry!) and everyone laughs? She's FINE! She finally smiles for the first time, right? She's no longer alone. She's now in the group. We believe "you can't fix a problem if you're cant' talk about it". And, if you can't laugh at something, that means you probably aren't going to talk. Thank you for watching!! And, if you want to see more character development than 7 minutes allows... help us keep making this, by sharing it! Please. Thanks! Love, M&M (aka "Dragonfly Couple") 🤩😍

@@bugtherapymovie speaking as someone on a health and social care course, I think a key part you're missing is that they are all laughing *at* her. Not *with*. laughter being the best medicine is a good philosophy to adopt, but only when you make it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR it is when you are laughing with someone and not AT them. This isn't productive in real life. Laughing at someone's issues is not OK, especially in a group support setting. When a person has been able to overcome their issues partially and realise the own absurdity of their situation, THEN you can laugh. I also find the notion that " If you can't laugh at something you aren't going to talk about it" an absurd notion that devalues the legitimacy of people concerns. 😊

Really amazing animation. Great character personalities and voice acting too. I think the main problem people are having about the ending is that the punchline didn’t really work. You can’t have a mosquito being afraid of blood be so outrageous that it makes everybody laugh when her problem was really no more outrageous than everyone else’s problems (spider afraid of spiders, fly afraid of germs), so a lot of people just interpret it as mean spirited. I think dark humor is great it just has to be done right, and delicately. Like maybe the mosquito finally tells the group that her fear is that she’s so small and it’s seems like everything is out to get her, Dr Pill explains that there’s no need for fear and they all have each other, then the bird comes and eats the guy and Dr Pill says, “On second thought, maybe a little fear is good. Run!” Then ends lol

Newt, this may be the most thoughtful comment we've received! I actually LOL'd at your ending, and it's not easy to make a comedy writer do that. We like our "ending" because we are by no means "done"... This was just a teaser, a start, for a feature or series. Our thinking (and I don't mean to strike an argumentative tone, because I loved your idea) was that we thing: Citronella is terrified of being laughed at -- which is the very definition of shame. Friends DO laugh at each other (mine sure do!). not with - at - sometimes. Citronella smiles for the first time in the film, after, getting laughed at, and realizing, she is still standing, she is not fragile, she is strong, and no longer embarrassed, and no longer ashamed, and has ACCEPTANCE, and best of all, no longer alone! She's now IN a group, with friends. That's our intention -- but again, this was never meant to be a finished story... She's just getting started. But, kudos to you, for your VERY funny idea. This is worth the time if you want a good belly laugh. The voice actors are top notch: Jay Leno Dr. Phill Etc. I don’t like creepy crawlies, but the nuances and layers of humor are deep. The animation reminds me of a combo (Bug’s Life meets Inside Out) or (Pixar meets Classic Disney) and did get several festival awards.

Mixed feelings, like the message it’s ok not to be ok & the different problems for each bug, but ending felt outta place, especially laughing/implying the squash & the bird kill scene. While it’s a good twist, it just feels like it shouldn’t be there.

Dragonfly Couple - ((attatchment issues and Abandonment issues, aka Relation ship issues)) stick bug - depression/feeling ignored and invisible??? Leaf bug - Necrophobia, the fear of seeing dead organisms/people , (symbolized by dead leaves) Spider - arachnophobia (fear of spiders) Mosquito - hemophobia (also known as blood phobia) the fear of seeing any or own blood.

I’m going to be honest, I’m not too keen on this. I don’t think that the characters represent anyone other than caricatures of those who do genuinely suffer from mental illnesses. Fear of germs, god complexes, attachment issues etc often stem from traumatic events in someone’s life and I feel as though there could have been a better way of signalling these issues without the cliches of “I’m too cuddly with my partner” or “I have hand sanitiser, I’m such a germophobe 🤪”. I understand where these connections come from eg, flies rub their digits together, mosquitos drink blood and grasshoppers are energetic but there’s definitely a better way to do it than this. I appreciate the overarching message of “ it’s okay not to be okay, and it’s especially okay to ask for help”, but at a time when there are unfortunately those online who portray themselves as over exaggerated “Victims” of a false mental illness for clout; it just seems a bit too wacky and zany of a scenario for such complex topics. An example of media that does this beautifully is Puss in Boots, the last wish in which the main character suffers from his own anxieties which then results in him having an anxiety attack. It’s a tough but excellent scene to watch as the total lack of dialogue and character animation tells the audience all we need to know, (as opposed to the main character shaking violently with bags under his wide eyes, chattering his teeth muttering “oh man oh man gotta go let’s go gotta go!” Or something along those lines, keeping in with the mood of this video. Again, I appreciate the message, as someone who works with animation I can appreciate the colours and fluidity of the characters. It was overall very well rendered in my opinion. Also kudos to the VA’s who have partaken in this, I’m sure they are proud of the outcome. Overall, interesting concept and animation, the subject matter could’ve been approached more ethically ( in my opinion).

I think I get it! This is supposed to represent how Dr. Phil talks all the time about making a 'safe space' on his show and helping people when actually he has NO LICENSE (after he dated an underage patient) and shouldn't be helping anyone. The patients laughing after Citronella opens up represents how he exploits his patients' personal struggles for views on his show. The grasshopper dying represents the patients he discards after he gets what he wants, which is views, that's all he cares about. BTW animation looks amazing.

Here's a fact about Mosquitoes. Male Mosquitoes don't actually bite at all or feed on blood, and that's a good thing. They only feed on plant juices, water, and necter. Male Mosquitoes are smaller than the females and their antennas are very bushy. The Female Mosquitoes are the ones that bite and they don't have bushy antennas like the males. I like the male Mosquitoes better than the female Mosquitoes, because they don't bite.

Well-designed characters, surprisingly good voice acting, a few good jokes, incompetence animation? Is somebody trying to get a job at Pixar? I'm actually kind of surprised at how quickly I grew attached to these characters based on their designs alone. And then it adds a hotline after a short that shows people in the therapy group, including the therapist, laughing at someone who needs help.
