** My hand was kind of shaky when I originally filmed this so when I uploaded it I let KZread stabilize it thats why the video looks so wavy.**
This is the latest project Ive been working on. Its a Bendron Titan cargo trailer that I converted into a stealth camper. I didn't want to go out and just buy a pop-up or travel trailer, I wanted something more low key and something that I could design to fit my needs. So i picked up this 2012 12x6 cargo trailer for just under $3,000 and started coverting it. I started by silver sealing the roof then I coated the entire chasis and under carriage with rust-o-leum brand undercoating. As far as insulation I began by removing all the plywood panels from the walls and ceiling then I glued Dow rigid foam insluation to the back of the panels in between the beams. Then I put strips of JM R-19 fiberglass insulation ontop of the rigid foam. Finally, I sealed everything in place with sheets of 10mil vapor barrier and screwed the plywood panels back in place. I also used Tight Seal window flashing tape to cover all the seams of the plywood panels. Then I began finishing the inside esthetically and installing the water and electrical system. I had fun building this camper and definately learned a lot from this project. cargo trailer camper conversion

Well, the screw up with the curtains just helped you add a skill to your prepping arsenal. Knowledge is power. Being able to sew is in my opinion one of the most often overlooked prepper skills.

Agreed. A clothing store would be few and far between when the shit hits the fan. Fixing tears in fabric is an essential skill. Coats, pants, sleeping bags or what ever. Mending things whether it be a vehicle or a pear of pants is crucial to moral and an ongoing way of life.

Nice! Hey here is a tip if you want it. Take a 8" wide pvc pipe about 8 feet long and put screw end caps on both sides. You can permanently mount it to the trailer and use it to carry fishing rods, maybe a rifle or other stuff instead of it taking up space on the inside.

Great job! I had a similar trailer I used for work and camping. The one mod I would highly recommend would be to "flip" your axle. You would move your axle from above the springs to below them, giving you 4"-5" of extra ground clearance. This helps to prevent dragging your leveling jacks and really gives peace of mind when entering rough areas. Really good looking trailer!

Jeff Lilly In my other response, I mentioned "being with people who have built similar units"... Sturgis is EXACTLY what they built theirs for. Loaded with Solar, Satellite / Flat Screen and screen door on the side entry, with a sectioned screen magnetic closure door for the ramp opening. They put both of their bikes inside, and when they roll them out, the sofa/bed swing down from the walls. 8 or 9 years of improvements and I would say that all 3 units are nearly perfect for each couple's budget and needs.

+Lewis Johnson Also, a good idea is to get a coil of black pvc 10 to 20 feet to put up on roof and run water through it for hot water. A mixer valve will be needed since the hot water could hit 200 degrees, (The longer the tubing coiled up, the more hot water until it cools down).

+hughie voso Absolutely. I used a 30 gallon black barell laid on it's side on the top of a Step Van once when chasing jobs on the road for a "vagabond" shower I made. That worked pretty good but yes the water could light you up after a sunny day lol. I had it all gravity fed and as for the shower being too hot it was in the mornings usually when I showered as I worked night shift as a crane rigger then so it was OK except in winter months to say the least. Thanks for the reply man and keep on keeping on!

Hi, you did a great job so far! Adding solar capable will really get you off the grid. I do have two things, that you may want to do. Attach a shower head holder on the out side wall and attach some dark water hoes wound up flat on the roof of the cargo trailer for a few gallons of hot water. I am sure you can figure out how to do the plumbing. Again, great job! Stay safe and enjoy life!

+Gachitadamunga Hell, I wouldn't trade my travel trailer for that. My trailer is far more capable, full-featured, and comfortable. We use a utility trailer (pulled by the wife) for storage and a portable workshop. The two pickup trucks add additional hauling options. Mine, for example, hauls an inflatable boat (motor, gear, etc) for fishing or recreation.

Good start on you conversion. I have a utility trailer that I use for my handyman service. I plan on converting it into a camp trailer in the near future. Nice to get ideas for when I do. Just for your info, you didn't need to put in a J trap for your sink since you don't have a sewage storage tank. That way you don't have to worry about getting the water out of the J trap for winter storage/freezing. The purpose of the J trap is to hold water to keep the sewer smell/gases from coming up. You don't have that problem.

This is quite the set up bud, very clever use of space with plenty of room for options. I'm a plumber R&C. And a tankless water heater would be a good option. Often referred to as "Rinai" heaters, would not only ideally fit. It would handle any demands you throw at it. But you would might need to invest in to a solar panel?

For your first project, I'd say you did a pretty nice job!! I see what you mean by "stealth" camping... you can't tell that's a camper. It looks like a utility trailer (because, of course it is one) and you can put that where you might expect to find a utility trailer. You're not as likely to get chased out of an area. Again, nice work!

Your workmanship looks great, but with all due respect. I believe having all of that water (320lbs.) mounted in the nose of that trailer causes you to be way to heavy on the tongue for proper weight distribution. That can cause poor pulling stability. Also it seams like you have all of the weight on one side of the unit. You might want to try distributing the weight out a little better. This would make pulling that thing a dream. I’m pulling one behind a 2 door Jeep Wrangler and I’ve really had to pay attention to load/ distribution very closely. My pulling capacity is only 2,500 lbs. which is approximately 250 lb. tongue weight. Please don’t take my post the wrong way. Overall your project looks fantastic. Hope everything is working out for you.

Love the simplicity of this rig and that you sewed the curtains yourself! I like the idea of creating something yourself . . . like building your own home . . . you know the inside and outside of what you have. You did a beautiful job. I didn't see a window and realize that cutting one in compromises the integrity of the trailer and weather-proofing. Would you recommend adding a window now that you've traveled/camped in this? How is it holding up now that it's been 3+ years? Thanks for your knowledge!

I like it but it would have been more space saving if you built a false floor maybe 2 1/2 feet deep with cubbies below for storage, and add a lift lock roof to make up for the walk space loss by the raised floor. it would add a lot more light and don't use stationary cabinets or a bed. use Japanese floor futons that can roll up and be put away. (the thick ones not the traditional ones.) the cabinets should be on hinges so you can prop them up when in use and lay down flat against the wall when not. and on the walls and ceilings have hooks and stuff so when you have guests over you can add hammocks and fabric hanging closets and cabinets that again if not in use you can store away or tie on to the ceiling. and if you want a couch you can hook one up to the wall. the two and a half deep floor would give you space to store a composting toilet under the floor when not in use. just my opinion...

Wouldn't a cargo trailer actually be the opposite of stealth for a SHTF scenario? Cargo trailer = lots of supplies to steal. Whereas a camper = a mobile living area. Honestly I'd think about using a camper to haul around my valuable supplies as stealth... Just saying.

TheGWood89 I suppose that if you went off grid, say pre shtf. You could park most places with this set up and no one think twice. Post shtf I see your point. Unless you camouflage it well, it would definitely bring some unwanted attention.

In SHTF, no one's going to need drywall, cabinets, racing equipment or stuff like that. They'll want food, water and guns, and I'd look for those in a camper before in a trailer that looks like this. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my take.

TheGWood89 , the camper would be easy for theives to get into, cargo more secure.

***** So could getting hit by a bus or a surface to air missile. However just like playing the lottery one makes plans in accordance with the probability and statistical significance of winning the lottery. That is I don't spend all day designing the indicate details of my new mega yacht because I may play occasionally.

I think there is logic in hiding in plain sight so a work trailer makes good sense :) I have thought the same thing about these types of vehicles. Great renovation! :)
